||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Does not sit well in the ear. side to side movement they move. Sound quality in a quiet environment is good but in a loud environment you turn up the volume and battery life does not last over one or two hours depending on the volume setting.

Super comfy and great situational awareness
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I wasn't sure what I was getting into with these, but I knew I didn't love the all-day comfort of in ear buds and I needed to hear what was going on around me. I wanted to try something that might be more comfortable to wear all day and keep me more engaged with the people around me. These buds check those boxes. As far as comfort goes, these are easily the most comfortable buds I've ever worn. I really can't even feel them once they are on. They sit nicely over the ear canal. The little arm that goes behind the ear is flexible and really soft to the feel. I forget they are on. At the same time, they are super secure. You can easily use them while working or exercising without worrying about them slipping out. You can head bang in these things, and they won’t move. I didn’t know what to expect on sound. I had read that you really can’t get a great sound without a sealed, in ear bud. While I agree that my high end in ear buds do produce a higher quality sound, especially in the lower range, these buds sound really good for something that isn’t “in” you ear. I was able to overwhelm them and create distortion when I maxed them out on some bass heavy music. In reality, I’d never listen to them that loud, so I don’t think it’s a problem, but you should know that the firmware isn’t quite up to the task of managing thumping bass at high volume. That may come along with updates over time. Even if it never changes, it’s really not a problem for me. Side note, it is possible for people near you to hear something coming from the buds in a quiet environment if you have them cranked up. Just worth being aware of. One thing I want to point out about phone calls. For whatever reason, my cell did not automatically accept the call through the buds. I had to click the audio button and tell it to use the Shokz. I’m not blaming Shokz for this, just making you aware. I’m not quite sure why it didn’t auto switch the call audio to the buds considering that I was listening to music when the call came in, so I was obviously connected to the phone. Not a huge deal, but something worth noting if you run into that problem. I love that I don’t lose situational awareness with these buds. I have some really expensive in ear buds with pass through technology that allow ambient sound in if I choose. While they do help, they are nothing compared to what you get with these Shokz since they aren’t in your ears at all. You can really hear everything. I can hear my keyboard clicks just fine while I sit here and type this review. Fully aware of my surroundings. That makes these great for work. I don’t end up looking like I’m ignoring someone who pops into my office to say hello when I’m focused on a computer screen. My wife loves them for her job as well. She works on a farm and can listen to music while having full blown conversations with her fellow farmhands. For obvious reasons, you aren’t going to have noise cancelling, but that’s not what these are designed to do. Setup was super easy. They where in pairing mode as soon as I opened the case. My mobile found them immediately and hooked right up. I then downloaded the Shokz app and it found the buds immediately. The app had me run a firmware update that took about 5 minutes and I was up and running. There are a few EQ options in the software. I think the standard preset is the best for general music listening. The Bass Boost feels muddy to me. Treble Boost feels very tinny. The Vocal preset seems like it would be good for listening to an audio book or talking on the phone. I ultimately created my own custom EQ setup that suited my taste. As I said above, you can overpower these buds, but if you set your own EQ and don’t run your mobile at max volume, you can get surprisingly great sound for this style of bud. You can also set up the touch function features through the app. I like to set the double tap on either ear at pause/play, and a tap and hold on the right to be volume up with left to be volume down. You don’t have a lot of options, but you can pick from a few tap option presets. I do wish the tap and hold reacted more quickly. You have to hold it for what feels like a long time before it starts changing the volume. The case is simple enough. It’s slightly bigger than in ear cases because of the part that goes behind your ear. That said, it isn’t too big. I actually like it because it is more like a flat rounded corner square and sits in your pocket less conspicuously than the chunky rectangular cases of many brands. Battery life is awesome. I haven’t come close to draining them fully, and they quick charge to like an hour of listening time in something like 5 minutes. Overall, I really like these buds. They are incredibly comfortable and have really good sound quality for this type of device. You can peak them out, so don’t think you are going to blast music at unsafe levels and still be happy with the quality. They aren’t cheap, but if you want something with good sound that still lets you be fully engaged with your surroundings, these are a great option to consider.

Horrible Battery Life
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Horrible battery life! Not even a month old and they are dead if I leave off charger a few days. The case does not hold a charge, it will be at 100% and after one hour off the charge it is 90%. Then who knows how the earbuds themselves with no use drain to zero in just a few days. Very annoyed and disappointing to spend this much money and encounter dead earbuds when I need to use them!

The evolution of open-ear listening
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’m a big fan of Shokz headphones—this is my fifth pair, so I’m definitely on board. If you know Shockz (formerly Aftershokz), then you know that they made a name for themselves producing high-quality bone-conduction headphones. These allow you to keep your ear canals free so that you don’t lose touch with your surroundings—as a runner and biker, this is especially important to me for safety reasons. It’s always been a given that I would have to give up sound quality for special awareness, and I didn’t mind that, but always wished the sound quality could be better. Don’t get me wrong, Shokz has improved the sound quality of their bone-conduction headphones with each release, enough that I’ve traded up several times, but they were never the headphones I’d choose if I just wanted to shut out the world and enjoy my music. The Openfit earbuds are their attempt to bridge the gap and bring serious sound quality to open ear headphones. Normally, my top two criteria for evaluating earbuds/headphones are comfort and sound quality. All the features in the world don’t matter if they sound bad or if you won’t wear them because they’re uncomfortable. One of the best things about bone-conduction headphones is their comfort. You can literally wear them for hours and not even know they’re there. I have a lot of earbuds, some of which are pretty comfortable, but even the best of them are fatiguing after a while, plus I just don’t like having something in my ears that long. Even with recent technology additions like “hear through”, it’s just not practical to have buds in my ears all day. As I’ve already said, bone-conduction headphones don’t win in the sound quality category, but the ability to maintain situational awareness has always trumped that for me, so I’ve stayed with them. The latest offering from Shokz is the Openfit. These are their first true wireless earbuds. They’re not bone-conduction, but they are still open ear earbuds, meaning that they don’t sit in the ear canal like regular earbuds. Instead, they utilize hooks that go around your ear (called Dolphin Arc hooks), with tiny speakers sitting right inside your ears, directing sound into the ear canals. The hooks are amazingly secure, and I did not manage to dislodge them shaking my head, running, or bending all the way over. In addition, they’re super comfortable, covered in a substance Shokz calls “liquid silicone”. It is very soft and adapts to the size of your ear, making them comfortable enough to wear for hours on end without fatigue. They even work well with glasses, which is something I was worried about. Out of the box, I wore them for 3 hours straight with only a little “tiredness” on the backs of my ears, but that may have actually been due to the combination of the earbuds and my glasses. These may be the first earbuds I really could wear all day, but I haven’t gone that far yet. Pairing them with your phone the first time is very easy, as they go into pairing mode when you take them out of their compact charging case, which features USB-C charging, but not wireless charging. Strangely, Openfit does not support multipoint pairing like their other headphones do, so you’ll have to delete the pairing with your phone and then pair them with another device if you want to use them with something else. This is a minorly annoying oversight, given that Shokz knows how to do this. So, the Openfit check the comfort box, but how good do they sound? I paired them right out of the box and started listening. I used my normal music app, which features customizable EQ. They sounded good, but didn’t wow me. I decided to try the app to see if it had any additional magic to add. When the app started up, my music was still playing, but it asked if I wanted to update the firmware, which I did. When the update finished, I picked some EQ settings in the app, and wow! What a difference! I’m not sure whether the app or the update (or both) did the trick, but it really made the Openfit sound great! They aren’t going to cause you to stop using your studio-quality IEMs, but these have sound that bone-conduction can only dream of! Highs are crisp, mids are clean, and bass is good but not great (need to leave some room for improvement). Other reviewers have mentioned how some bass sounds, particularly kick drums, don’t sound quite right, and I agree. I liken the sound to what I would get when my speakers got too old and the foam would dry rot, leaving the cones to vibrate without any dampening. It’s like that, although not exactly and not all the time. I’m hoping that Shokz will be able to fix this with a firmware update in the future. Overall, though, these sound really great, and I’m willing to trade a little sound quality for the ability to comfortably wear them as long as I want and still maintain situational awareness. Call quality is great, and my wife, who usually complains about earbud call quality, said I sounded great. She couldn’t tell I was talking to her via earbuds. Speaking of calls, it would be nice if there were a way to mute myself during calls, but this is not available. The touch controls are very good, once you get used to the angle of the earbuds in your ears. Unfortunately, your choices on how to use them are somewhat limited. By default, you can double-tap to play/pause your music or podcast. Long pressing on the right bud will skip to the next track, while the left will go to the previous track. There are a few other configuration choices in the app, but you can’t have the ability to control the volume, track skipping and voice assistant together at the same time, nor can you choose which side you want for things like voice assistant. Hopefully, Shokz will add more options in the future. I really do think Shokz has hit their goal with the Openfit. They’ve got an IP54 rating for water and dust resistance, which should mean they’re fine for running and workouts, but I wouldn’t submerge them. Speaking of workouts, one of the annoying things about bone-conduction headphones is that the headband on the back of your head would push the buds out of place if you laid your head on a bench. Not so with the Openfit, since there is no headband to contend with. If you’ve already got a pair of bone-conduction headphones, especially the OpenRun or OpenRun Pro, you may not need these unless the sound quality or other features are calling to you. I’m deducting a star for the issue with bass sounds and lack of multipoint pairing, but I hope that both of these will be corrected in the future. The Openfit are perhaps the best all-around earbuds on the market today, and for most things, they’ll be my new go-to earbuds. They’re a bit pricey right now, but hopefully that will come down over time as well. If you’re trying to decide if you should get these, it comes down to your specific use cases. If you value situational awareness and are willing to trade some sound quality to get it, these are the best combination of those two things. If your main use case is sitting down to lose yourself in the music, but you want to run while listening to podcasts now and then, you might be happier with traditional earbuds. There are so many different choices these days, but I think Shokz has a winner on their hands with the Openfit. I’ll be using these alternately with my OpenRun headphones to see which I prefer over the long haul, and which version I’ll keep buying when the time comes.
