Comfortable, even with glasses, and nice sound

I'm sort of picky about earbuds. The sort that squeeze into your ear canal never fit properly for me, despite trying every size tip. The other sort that just slide over your ear canal and hang out a little bit also never stay in place and, especially the wireless ones, pop out and get lost. Shokz, well known for their bone induction headsets, have offered up an alternative solution. The OpenFit earphones wrap around the outside of your ear, and instead of going into or over your ear canal, they get inserted just above the canal and have tiny speakers that direct the sound into your ear from there. This has the benefit of allowing you to still hear environmental sounds while also being immersed in the audio that you are playing. This is the complete opposite of the ANC that many others tout, since instead of cancelling the outside noise and being in your own bubble, you are still very much aware of your surroundings. Listening to music with the OpenFit earbuds is quite enjoyable. The treble is clean and clear, with well defined mids, and decent bass depending on what you are listening to. I threw on some old wubby EDM tracks just to see how they would react, and with the subs going all over in the track itself, the bass response couldn't keep up and sort of had a warbled doppler effect. Throwing on Havergal Brian's Symphony No1 in D minor, I forgot that I was wearing headphones and listening to music while I was washing dishes, and I was wondering why everything felt so epic. Since these wrap around the auricle of the ear, at first I was worried about how they would be with glasses, so I made sure to try them both with my contacts and my glasses, as well as a pair of sunglasses. I was surprised to find that they were just as comfortable to use both bespectacled and without. This is a welcome change from the usual set of cans that I prefer, which always squeeze my glasses uncomfortably, causing them to readjust with every little movement. They also don't mess up my hair like wearing a pair of cans all day will. Being able to listen to environmental sounds while still enjoying a podcast or soaking in a new album is huge as a parent. There's times where I want to listen to something while doing a mind numbing chore, but end up doing it in silence because I have to listen out for my daughter in the other room. With these on, I can fold laundry, do dishes, and cook dinner while still being attentive, and even participate in family conversations, all while jamming to my "get things done" playlist. Multipoint pairing is also sort of a thing, but only through the app. The earbuds will connect to two different devices and the app allows switching between the devices. The earbuds will not auto-connect to whatever the proper device is. My only gripe is the touch controls and lack of sensors that can tell if they are being worn and automatically stop playback that I'm used to with other wireless earbuds. By default, the only things that you can do with the touch controls are changing the track and pausing, as well as answering/rejecting calls. Volume control is not possible through touch controls. And taking out the earbuds will not pause the music automatically. Not really a dealbreaker, but would have been nice to have.

Great open-ear earbuds for outdoor activities

I bought a pair of the Trekz Titanium bone-conduction headphones when they first came out, mainly for use when bicycle riding, where being able to hear your surroundings is an important safety issue. While they still work well enough, the wraparound strap makes them bulky to carry around and can cause issues by interfering with my helmet, helmet straps, and eyeglasses. So I was ready to try out these new open-ear headphones that do not work by bone conduction but by some sort of “directed sound” technology. They are certainly comfortable to wear and I could hardly tell that they were there compared to wireless earbuds that plug into your ear canals and get uncomfortable after a while. I could easily see wearing these all day if called for. The soft rubber retainer that wraps around your ear seem secure enough and I have not had any problem with them falling off. That’s another difference from conventional earbuds, especially when used during outdoor activities like running or cycling. I paired the OpenFit earbuds with my Pixel 7a smartphone and also my Garmin Venu 2 Plus smartwatch with no problems at all and was able to play content from both devices without any hitches. The OpenFit can be paired with multiple devices – not at the same time – but I was unable to find any information about how many pairings can be saved. The sound seemed very good, although I’m inclined more to podcasts than music and can’t really judge their frequency response, etc. On the downside, playback and calls are controlled by touch-sensitive button areas on both earbuds and the functions available are limited by default to pause/play and track fwd/back. When I first read the (online) user guide, I found that it said “Volume control: Use the volume control on the paired Bluetooth device.” This is unacceptable for me since, especially when cycling, my smartphone is not in a place where I can easily get at or use it! Fortunately, after downloading the Shokz app from the Google store, I discovered that the app will let you reprogram the buttons and one of the available functions is volume up/down. Still, it seems like they could have supported a few more functions for the buttons; they are also a bit finicky in operation, often requiring a couple of tries to press the right spot, do a double-tap, etc. I’d much prefer a more tactile control, but maybe that just wasn’t possible with this design. My main use for these is for outdoor activities. I tried them at the gym once, but that’s a place where I’d like to block out ambient noise and prefer my ANC earbuds. They are great for walking and running, and I especially liked them for cycling. They are so light that I could hardly tell that I had them on and are much more comfortable than my old bone-conduction headset and don’t interfere with my helmet or glasses. Wind noise is always an issue when cycling but I didn’t have to turn up the volume excessively to hear clearly; this adjustment was easy to make after reprogramming the touch controls as mentioned above. These are definitely the best open-ear earbuds that I have used, and with a few UI improvements could be even better.

    Top-notch comfort with excellent sound

Pros -clear, loud sound -excellent comfort and fit -single ear / mono use -quick charging -customized sound setting via Shokz App Cons -single indicator light on case I am not a fan of traditional earbuds that have to be inserted in the ear because they rarely stay in place when working out, especially once the sweat starts pouring. I also have a hard time finding earbuds that are comfortable after a long wear time. These wrap around, open-fit earbuds are by far the most comfortable pair I’ve ever worn and are a great option for those who share similar issues with fit and discomfort that traditional earbuds can bring. While these aren't noise canceling due to their open-fit design, they do produce very loud sound to produce a similar noise blocking effect. I wore these while mowing and the volume can be loud enough to tune out the mower substantially. (They also play music loud enough that I was able to successfully hunt down a "misplaced" earbud that one of my cats had batted off the counter and under the fridge, unbeknownst to me.) The sound quality with these earbuds is excellent (once adjusted), and with the use of the Shokz App, you can fine tune the sound settings to your liking and even save your customized setting. In addition to the excellent comfort, fit, and sound, the microphones works very well when in use for phone calls. They filter out background noise and pick up your voice very well. Another positive factor of these earbuds is the ability to use only one earbud at once (mono use). Usually when I go outside for a walk or run, I prefer to only wear one earbud so that I can listen for approaching cars. With the open-fit design, which allows for more surrounding sounds to be heard, I felt comfortable wearing both earbuds during my walks and found the perfect balance for listening to music while still being able to take in my surroundings. The open-fit design is additionally nice for talking on the phone with both earbuds in use since I could hear myself speaking. Additionally, the touch controls on the earbuds are responsive and easy to use, and can also be customized through the Shokz App. The battery life of the earbuds is good. They're not as good as other earbuds I own, but I felt that it was satisfactory for my needs. The good news for heavy users is that the earbuds do recharge fairly quickly, and the case holds a charge to keep the earbuds fully charged between uses. Oddly, it does appear that when plugged in, the earbuds aren’t charged simultaneously, so one will be fully charged before the other. The only slight downside to these earbuds is with the battery indicator light on the case. It’s a single light that only indicates high or low battery base on the color being green or orange. I have a pair of earbuds with a case that has four indicator lights, and I feel that provides a bit more accuracy to where the charge level is at with the case. Overall, very I am happy with these earbuds and highly recommend for those looking for a pair of earbuds that provide excellent comfort, fit and sound.

I would say my ears are probably average sized. Not too small and not horribly large either. I expected the fit to be pretty decent but when i out them on, they felt heavy and not secure at all. This is definitely not something i would recommend for running. I would be to scared they would fall out and never be found again. With that being said, i will be returning these and going with Bose.
