I saw this movie for the first time on the day that Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was captured for the second time. The timing couldn't be better. For years, the Mexican drug cartels have been running amok in Mexico, terrorizing rivals and citizens alike for the purpose of making money off of America's obsession with drugs. As a result, many people have been arrested, tortured, mutilated and/or killed in this vicious world of drug trafficking. Emily Blunt plays an FBI agent trying to do the right thing. However, she's also portraying us. Guiding us into a world where right and wrong don't have clear cut definitions. Josh Brolin plays a laidback but authoritative CIA agent who's using Emily for his own agenda. The star of the show though is Benicio Del Toro. Without giving too much away, he's an associate of Josh's character with a complicated past. His motives nor his limitations aren't known until the end of the film. He's there to remind us that sometimes you have to become the thing you hate in order to conquer it.
