It's hard for me to watch a movie that doesn't have anything uplifting. I watch movies to get away from reality and this just brings me down.

Silver Linings Playbook - One of 2012's Best Films

Written and directed by David O. Russell (The Fighter), Silver Linings Playbook is based on the 2008 novel by Matthew Quick and stars (Bradley Cooper) as Pat Solitano, a troubled man who has lost everything – his house, his job, and his wife. After spending eight months in a Baltimore mental institution, Pat finds himself back in Philadelphia, living with his mother (Jacki Weaver) and father (Robert De Niro). Despite a restraining order, Pat is determined to remain positive, rebuild his life, and reunite with his estranged wife Nikki (Brea Bee). Meanwhile, Pat’s parents hope he’ll get back on his feet and take part in the family’s obsession with the Philadelphia Eagles. Things take an unexpected turn when he meets kindred crazy person Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a young woman trying to cope with her husband’s death by sleeping with everyone at her work. Pat and Tiffany bond over their issues and idiosyncrasies, with ‘crazy person’ topics like the types of medication they’ve taken. Tiffany offers to help Pat reconnect with his wife, but only if he’ll return the favor by doing something very important for her – be her partner in a freestyle dance competition. Silver Linings Playbook is a delightful, uplifting film that soars on incredible performances. Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom) delivers a realistic portrayal of a worried, protective mother while DeNiro’s Pat Sr. is a bookmaker and sports fanatic, obsessively arranging his television remotes and rubbing his lucky handkerchief during Eagles games. This is the best DeNiro has been since the mid-nineties. Sure, he was a funny caricature in films like Meet the Parents and Machete, but here he plays a living, breathing person who buries his emotions and attempts to bond with his troubled son over watching the game. A father unable to express his emotions, Pat Sr. is forced to confront his son and in turn, open up and address some of his own emotional hangups. DeNiro deserves Best Supporting Actor for this role and I sincerely hope the Academy recognizes him for his work here. Cooper and Lawrence display versatility and surprising range in their performances as imperfect people searching for a silver lining. Usually with romantic comedies, the reasons for love are inherent: Katherine Heigl is super attractive, Gerard Butler is super attractive – they should hook up (so I can watch). But here, there is a real, palpable chemistry between Cooper and Lawrence – they need each other, and we love watching them repair each other’s broken heart and mind… and of course they’re drop-dead gorgeous and sexy as all get-out, so that doesn’t hurt either. Silver Linings Playbook is one of the best films of the year – and a great followup to David O. Russell’s 2010 film, The Fighter. I think it gets nominated across the board, from acting to Adapted Screenplay, Director, and Best Picture. A humorous, relatable journey into all matters of the heart, Silver Linings Playbook is a reminder that we’ve all got baggage and problems and stuff to worry about – but we can get past it and find things that make life worth living.

A near perfect movie, many times rewatchable

Siliving Linings Playbook was my 2nd favorite film of 2012, it followed right behind Django Unchained. This movie is absolutely brilliant, just wonderful. It is rewatchable in every way, I even saw it three times in theaters. The acting is top notch, it has a beautiful touching story, and is really really funny. Jennifer Lawrence deserved her Best Actress Oscar by far for this. Bradley Cooper's best acting and best character to date. And the blu ray is almost perfect as well. The picture quality? Fantastic. The sound? Pitch perfect. Extras include makings of, deleted scenes, the only thing I would've wanted was a commentary by Lawrence, but she's a busy actress, so I understand. THIS FILM IS A MUST BUY. Even though it is rated R, it really is a family film for those families with kids already grown into their twenties. The movie made my father cry at the end, and almost made me. Just brilliant.

Against medical advice and without the knowledge of her husband Pat Solatano Sr., caring Dolores Solatano discharges her adult son, Pat Solatano Jr., from a Maryland mental health institution after his minimum eight month court ordered stint. The condition of the release includes Pat Jr. moving back in with his parents in their Philadelphia home. Although Pat Jr.'s institutionalization was due to him beating up the lover of his wife Nikki, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Nikki has since left him and has received a restraining order against him. Although he is on medication (which he doesn't take because of the way it makes him feel) and has mandatory therapy sessions, Pat Jr. feels like he can manage on the outside solely by healthy living and looking for the "silver linings" in his life. His goals are to get his old job back as a substitute teacher, but more importantly reunite with Nikki. He finds there are certain instances where he doesn't cope well, however no less so than some others who have never been institutionalized, such as his Philadelphia Eagles obsessed OCD father who has resorted to being a bookie to earn a living, his best friend Ronnie who quietly seethes over the control wielded by his wife Veronica, and Veronica's widowed sister, Tiffany Maxwell. In their fragile mental states, Pat Jr. and Tiffany embark on a love/hate friendship based primarily on what help the other can provide in achieving their individual goals. But they may reevaluate their goals as their relationship progresses.

    An overall strong movie!

This movie, although a comedy, has an emotional theme about finding good in your life when you are so psychologically damaged. It is about finding a silver lining when there's hardly anything good happening in your life because of the challenges that having a mental disorder has imposed on you and your future. Bradley Cooper did a good job playing his character although there were times when he was acting way too one dimentional. The good thing about it is that Jennifer Lawrence balanced it out and allowed Cooper to shine especially when the two of them are at a scene together. I wish that the movie could have given us more background about the disease and allowed us to see more of the past from both of these characters. All in all, the movie is highly enjoyable and the pairing of both Cooper and Lawrence work strong enough for this movie to be a truly feel good and warm movie of 2012.

There's nothing I can say about SLP that hasn't been said before, but the film lives up to the hype! David O. Russell tackles the issue of mental illness with grace. The film has the best ensemble of the year, featuring great performances from Cooper, Lawrence, De Niro, Weaver, and Tucker. You will feel for the characters when they struggle and be filled with joy when they triumph. It's a gem of a film which should be in every collector's library.

One of the rare films that definitely lives up to fantastic praise it got. Jennifer Lawrence is fantastic as is her co-star Bradley Cooper. However the big scene stealer here is Robert De Niro who gives one of best understated roles of his career. Can't recommend it enough!

It's a great movie and well acted. If you're someone is looking for a lot of action, look elsewhere. I would say it's more in the drama/comedy so if you're looking for action look elsewhere.
