Skullcandy Crusher ANC Brings the Bass!

I've used various Skullcandy earphones over the years but have always leaned toward the 4 letter industry leaders when it comes to noise cancelling headphones. The Skullcandy Crusher ANC has certainly entered the ring with the other guys, and are making it a competition. On opening the box, I was really impressed with the build quality and the overall look of the tan leather over-ear pads and the headband padding. The control buttons are on the larger size for easy use, without being too big. The ability to adjust volume and tracks without having to take out my iPhone is a big plus. Essentially every feature of the headphones can be adjusted/controlled on the headphones. They also ship with a nice low-profile zippered travel/storage case. A very helpful User Guide is included in the box and walks through all of the controls, setup and usage. It took about 5 minutes from unboxing to fully customized bass-rocking music. There's a Skullcandy app that can be downloaded, it's got a great sound-customization process. It's kind of like an hearing test which sets up the headphone's output based on the user's hearing. Pretty cool! Only downside, this is pretty much the only thing the app does. Fit - the headphones are super adjustable and can really be customized to best fit the user. The super plush leather over-ear cups and headband pad form to the head nicely and hold the headphones in place. I wore them for nearly 3 hours while leaf blowing my yard and noticed there were no "hot spots" or discomfort after being worn for an extended timeframe. Sound - this is what it's all about, and the Crushers did not let me down. Although there is no app support for customizing the sound, Skullcandy has done a great job of balancing the highs, miss and lows...and then they take it a step further with the Haptic Bass feature. I was a bit skeptical before using it, but it turned out to be my favorite option. With a little slide of the control on the left ear cup, the haptic bass response can be boosted from nothing to ear-thumping goodness. I used it while watching movies and it was so cool, very immersive. ANC Active Noise Cancelling - this feature works very well, although may not be the best in class...yet. It certainly does a great job of blocking out most sounds, and I have not heard the "hiss" other reviewers have mentioned. It would be nice if there was some adjustability to the noise cancelling, but overall it is above average in performance. The Ambient Mode is a nice touch if you don't want to be fully immersed in your music...it allows for outside "noise" to be heard when this mode is turned on. Battery Life - Ran them for hours and the battery finally got down to the last dot on the scale. Plugged them in and tried the quick charge, and it seemed to work. Was able to run them again for a couple hours after only a quick 10 minute charge. Pros: - Build quality and really great color combo with the tan leather and black - Controls are easy to find and use while wearing the headphones - Sound quality is outstanding and the Haptic Bass feature is awesome! - Foldability and included travel case are bonuses for travelers - Easy setup - Great battery life and quick charge feature Cons: - App is pretty thin on features and functionality, it only offers the customized sound set up test. - Could use some additional sound adjustment options other than the Haptic Bass feature. Sure this can be added to the app over time. I did not use the Tile feature so can't speak to that option. Overall, these are headphones that I would certainly recommend to anyone looking for great sound, noise cancelling and the option to really Bring the Bass!

I purchased these because of the added bass and for mixing and recording music. The volume isn't as loud as you'd expect without adding the extra bass. If the max out volume was much louder without the bass the price would be justified. I would not recommend purchasing these at the current price. Very very overpriced.

This thing is a beast. Love it. Noise cancelling is a total different level, if you are not use to it you might feel dissy. But once you do get used to it. Oh i just live these.

Excellent noise isolation. Deep deep base for those who want it and adjustable for those who don't (like me) stays cool on my head so don't end up with super sweaty ears.

Great headphones. Great bass, mids and highs are a secondary thought to the makers of this headphone because without the bass these wouldn’t get used.

Flimsy buttuns. The power button, which you have to press and hold, didn't last longer than 2 weeks before the button was pressed inside of the device, I was forced to use a small key for a few weeks to power on and off, but now I have to use the input plug in order to use them, but w/o the Bluetooth/no power, you get no bass, which shows you the sound/loudness is mediocre w/o bass.

    Excellent Sound; Terrible Background Hiss

Given the premium price these Skullcandy Crusher ANC (Active Noise Canceling) headphones command, I expected more from them. TL;DR - great sound and wonderful bass are overshadowed by constant background hiss. Mix in a subpar app and I can only give the barest of recommendations to get these. PROs • Excellent overall sound. The standout feature is a slider switch lets you quickly dial in bass. Depending on the music, you can really feel the bass thumping on your head if you dial it up enough. • Download the free companion app to test each ear for optimal sound settings that’s copied to your headphones. Didn’t realize what a difference that would make. • Mic is very good for phone calls. I did not sound tinny to the other party, sounded very normal. • Ability to listen to ambient sound by cupping your hand over the left speaker. This action turns off the Active Noise Canceling (ANC) and elevates the outside sound. Repeating this motion turns off the ambient noise and turns ANC on again. Note: you can turn off ANC without turning on ambient sound, but if you really want to hear outside sound, turn ambient sound on. • Noise canceling is very effective against common household sounds like washer, dryer, street noise etc. • Built-in Tile tracker that works with the Tile app so you can always locate the headphones if misplaced • Comfortable to wear even for long periods. The opening was large enough to avoid pressing on my large ears. • Folds nicely into a small form factor, or you can use the case. CONs • By far the biggest con is the constant background static hiss. The hiss is more prominent when ANC is on, but still there when off. Certainly you won’t notice it as much on the loud parts of music, but most songs have soft sections where the static becomes obvious. And forget about listening to classical music or just using the headphones for some quiet time. • Other than creating your personal listening profile, the app has no other functionality. Other headphones in this price range have apps with more functionality. In fact, there’s a section in the app labeled “Settings” which is misleading because there are no settings that can be controlled. Instead it’s just a section to register your purchase, or to go to the website for product help. Perhaps the app is a work-in-progress. If so, not a good release for a premium priced product. • In order to personalize the sound with the app, the instructions say to sit in a quiet room. Unfortunately, sitting in a quiet room only emphasizes the hiss which gets in the way of listening for the tones used to build your profile. • The app shows percent battery remaining. Unfortunately even when fully charged, it will not show more than 78%. • Last, and least, the app has an annoying splash screen every time you launch it. Launch screens reminds me of apps from 10 or 15 years ago. • The power button on the left speaker takes a little practice to press correctly. Seems like only the left half of the button toggles the underlying switch that the button presses. Helps to use your nail rather than your finger to press it correctly. • The documentation is not very clear about the difference between turning ambient sound on versus turning ANC off. It takes a while to understand the difference and it doesn’t help that when you turn off ambient sound, the headset announces that you’re turning ANC on. • When you turn the headphones on, you have to keep the power button pressed until the announcement says power is on. Before the announcement plays you will hear the above mentioned static come on and if you let go of the button at that point, the headphones will turn off. You must wait for the announcement. The process of turning on the headphones just seems cumbersome compared to other premium offerings. • The FAQs say up to two devices can be simultaneously paired (though only one can stream sound at a given time). However, I was not able to make make SIMULTANEOUS connections. Only the most recently connected device would connect. My other premium headphones support two simultaneous connections, and it will play from whichever device plays first. If the first device stops, it will then allow the second device to play without further action on my part. So I can listen to music from my computer, and if a call comes to my phone, I can stop the music and answer the call. OTHER Case comes with a USB-C cable for charging, and an auxiliary cable to allow plugging the headphones into a headphone jack. As good as the sound is, and as useful the bass slider is, at this price range, I expected little, if any, background hiss. If you have any expectations of using these for soft music or in a serene environment, get something else. After all, they have “skull” and “crusher” in their name, not “quiet.”

Thank you for detailed feedback! We're glad to hear you're enjoying your Crusher ANC headphones. You bring up a great point about the "hiss" that can sometimes be heard in the background. This is from the Active Noise Cancellation. To get rid of it, simply turn off ANC mode.
