I have a high-end pair of Skullcrusher headphones that have active NR and can be tuned to rattle your head with aggressive bass if you wish. These are something different. They are straightforward, simple, wireless headphones with good sound. There is no app, no sound shaping, no tricks, just decent neutral sound at a good price for true wireless phones. The build is mostly plastic, but the quality is more than you might expect at the price point. The controls are simple, and the pairing was easy. There’s a headphone jack if you want to connect to a device without using Bluetooth and a cable included. There’s also a USB C charging cable and carrying bag. You provide the power source, but any USB block or computer will do. Charging is quick, and a full charge lasts over 30 hours. It’s good to see USB C used for charging on a price point item. As with most Bluetooth ear and headphones, you can control playback tracks and answer your phone. As stated, the sound quality is quite nice and neutral. Solid, not thundering bass which is nicely balanced with the midrange and highs. There is no app to load because there are no adjustable parameters. If you must fool with the sound, you can load and use an equalizer on the source device. The earpads are well-padded and comfortable and are large enough to fit over my ears, but not by much, and they do a fair job of blocking ambient sound. The Hesh Evo’s are a great choice for casual listening and everyday use with your phone or tablet. They don’t have active noise reduction or the sound and adjustment of $400-500 headphones, but you’re not paying for those features. However, their sound is better than many if not most in this price range. I think they hit a good balance between price, features, and quality. What they do, they do quite well, and I would recommend them to anyone not needing those expensive features.

The Skullcandy Hesh Evo headphones offer decent sound with some really convenient features. You get rapid charging with a 36 hour battery life, a slim profile, Tile tech, and hinges that fold, pivot, and swivel for supreme comfort. Unfortunately, the materials feel a bit cheap and the sound is only ok. Vocals seem a bit flat and recessed, with bass that’s notable at times, but nothing strong or remarkable. Think entry level car stereo sound quality, except these can get really, really loud while staying surprisingly clear. Design wise, the profile is nice and slim so it won’t look silly on your head, while the pivot and swivel hinges allow a custom fit and tight seal. It’s funny, the lightweight plastic used to make the headphones feels cheap, but by keeping the weight down, the Hesh Evo stays comfortable over a long period of time, and doesn’t try to slide off of your head. Controlling the headphones is pretty standard with all of the buttons for bluetooth pairing, play/stop, volume up/fwd, and volume down/rvrse under a single rubber pad. I had no issues pairing the headphones with my phone, and there’s no app needed unless you want to use the built-in Tile tech, which is a pretty cool feature if you lose your headphones a lot. You can sync it up with your cell phone and it’ll help you locate on a map where you last had them on, and activate an alarm to help you find them, even if they’re off. Super convenient if you travel with your headphones a lot, or have family members that like to borrow your things. Overall, the Hesh Evo offers an interesting mix of features, quality, and performance. The sound is loud and clear, but the sound quality is average. The build quality is only ok, but offers excellent comfort in a sleek profile. The Tile tech, long battery life, and rapid charging are all huge pluses though, which makes the Hesh Evo a strong choice for students and travelers. PROS - Sound can be turned up really loud - 36 hour battery life - Rapid charging USB C connection - Tile location tech - Comfortable to wear over long periods - Slim profile - Swivel and pivot hinges CONS - OK sound quality - Cheap plastic

This review is for the Skullcandy Hesh Evo headphones. I enjoy reviewing audio headphones and speakers, so when I got a chance to review these, I jumped on it. First impression: The headphones feel well made. They are made of aluminum and plastic and feel solid. The ear covers and head pad are soft vinyl. I was concerned the vinyl would cause me to sweat during extended wear, but that never happened. The headphones don’t collapse as some do; however, the cans rotate 90 degrees each so that the headphones lie flat. That could really help when carrying them in a backpack or briefcase. On the right can, there are 4 multi-purpose buttons covered by a single rubber cover. Running my hand over the rubber cover allowed me to determine which button I was on. Using the buttons was very easy. Test Setup: For the test, I used my MacBook Pro laptop with Apple Music over Bluetooth as the source. I played multiple genres to cover most listening preferences. The genres were easy listening, piano solos, Bluegrass, heavy metal, hardcore punk, hip-hop/rap, funk, and electronic. Performance: Let me start by saying I didn’t expect much from these headphones. I had never listened to them nor have I heard any reviews. The marketing and the name/logo led me to believe they were catering to metal and rock, maybe even punk, and would be loud and flat. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I started the test with one of my favorite artists, Randy Newman. Like most audio tests, I listened to his Land of Dreams and Sail Away albums. With both of these albums (I know I know, it’s streamed; but I started listening to music in the ’70s, so every source is called an album to me), the headphones did a great job at reproducing the entire frequency range. I love Randy Newman’s voice, and these cans reproduced his voice perfectly. Following Newman, I listened to Simon and Garfunkel and Dire Strait’s Love Over Gold. The headphones also did a great job at accurately reproducing the music and sounded clean and clear. Next, I moved on to heavy metal/punk. I was looking to see how well they stood up to metal. I started with Officer Negative, Suicidal Tendencies, and the Vandals. Following the punk category, I listened to Metallica, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Anthrax, and AC/DC. In both of these genres, I was able to turn the volume up really loud and they never distorted. Metallica’s “The Thing That Should Not Be” can cause cheaper speakers and headphones to distort with its full guitars and heavy bass. These headphones had no problems with it and did very well in this category. I then listened to piano solos from Philip Glass, Efram Bergman, and Ludovico Einaudi. These headphones did a surprisingly great job with these artists. Again, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of sound with piano solos. To finish up, I listened to high-energy electric music and hip-hop. I chose the B-52’s, Beastie Boys, The Black Eyed Peas, Black Knight, Digital Underground, George Clinton, Killer Mike, HOPP, LL Cool J, Gorillaz, The Gap Band, George Clinton and the P-Funk Allstars, NF, Tedashi, Trip Lee, The Prodigy, Crystal Method, and MAKJ & Timmy Trumpet. Most of these songs had a deep base and/or punchy bass. I figured if I was going to get these to distort or break down, it would be in this genre. In my opinion, this is the genre that these headphones really shined. The guitars in The B-52’s Rock Lobster were really clear and pronounced. The deep bass in L.L. Cool J’s “Going Back to Cali” was deep, clear, and undistorted while the highs were clear and crisp. MAKJ & Timmy Trumpet’s Remix of “Party Till We Die” sounded outstanding, with clear crisp synthesizer and tight, punchy bass, again with no distortion. And The Black Eyed Peas “Imma Be” has really deep bass, and again, these headphones did a great job handling the bass while providing crystal clear voices. My primary headphones cost at least four times as much as the Skullcandy Hesh Evo headphones and only sound a little better in this category. I’m as surprised as I am delighted. Conclusion: I’m not sure how I missed these headphones. It’s a clear case of judging a book by its cover. The Skullcandy Hesh Evo headphones sounded good in all categories, some better than others. But at no point did they ever sound bad or distorted. They are comfortable to wear, and the over the earpad cuts out almost background noise. And with extended listening, no matter what style of music I was listening to, I never got tired of listening to them. Final thoughts: To me, these headphones sounded their best with Easy Listening and Rap/Funk/Electronic music, which I thought was an odd combination. If this is the style of music you primarily listen to, I highly recommend them for you. But like I said before, they sound good regardless of the type of music you are listening to.
