Extremely disappointed in this earphone

And what is the little doodad that is on the one wire? I have turned it, twisted it, but I can't figure out what it does. The directions haven't helped at all.

Never again

The second is halfway there. Also, the click button (which I thought was for volume - it's actually to hang up calls) is so high up that I've repeatedly accidentally hung up on phone calls just from yawning - literally!
