Customers are saying

Customers praise the Slingbox 500 for its ease of use, excellent picture quality, and reliable DVR functionality. Many appreciate the straightforward setup and smooth streaming capabilities, allowing for convenient access to their home TV from various locations. However, some users find the price point to be high and express concerns about the app's functionality and the remote control's user-friendliness. A few also mention compatibility issues with certain devices and a lack of clarity in the instructions.

I purchased the slingbox to view on my iphone. It may be my phone service provider vs. the slingbox, but the reception was so poor because my phone was continuously buffering to receive the tv show. In addition, the wireless network was suppose to be easy to install. I had to watch a number of youtube videos to figure out how to work it with the lights on the outside of it. It couldn't find my wireless network so I had to mess around with it over a couple of days and eventually had to hook it up directly to my computer and download software updates before it would recognize my wireless router. Once it found the router, it was easy to install, but finding the router was a major obstacle. I returned the item to Best Buy and they refunded my money. They also suggested that I might try the Apple TV device for $99, which I haven't tried yet. I really don't know how this worked on an ipad, tablet or tv in another room since I purchased it to work on my phone. It may work fine in these other cases.

I bought this to replace the previous model I bought from you in July that worked great until it just quit in less than 6 months. I replaced it with this new model and it won't work and technical support cannot get me online. Very frustrated now over one month and no help

Only casts from android; not I-phone or I-pad. Need 2016 Roku stick to cast to TV. Time Warner app works better on second TV than Sling. Sling works on multiple set but limited to the same station. Doesn't work remotely if cable box times out.

Was very excited to get this from my wife for my birthday. Spent an hour trying to get it to work on 3 different tv before using online tech support they spent another hour trying to set it up remotely, as I did they were only able to view the video on the tv. Once they tried to view the video on the internet I would lose video on the tv and they would get a connection error on the inter net. I was very disappointed. You also have to purchase the app for your phone and tablet. I have droid phone, ipod, and ipad so I would have had to make at least 2 app purchases. If I'm going to spend $300 on a product I don't want to haber to purchase apps to use my product.

I had high hopes for this device, but was almost instantly disappointed. As soon as my husband tried to set it up, it would just begin to reset itself. It was like it was stuck in a reboot loop. You couldn't do anything with it because as soon as it restarted, it would begin it's rebooting process again. I tried to install it the next day and had nearly gotten all the way through the setup, when it began the reboot loop again. We took it back and told the employee why we were returning it, they said it was common with these. Buyer beware I guess.

Sling Boxes are terrible. Riddled with disconnects, no customer service, advertisements that hound you and can not be skipped and are difficult to set up in all but the way they want you to. But there is no other product that does this so you are stuck with it. Buy it because you have to not because you want to.

I was very excited about getting a Sling Box because of my spending considerable time at my vacation home and not being able to follow my local sports teams, among other news. It took me about three hours to set up, even with some assistance from Tech Support. After set up was complete, it still required extra steps whenever I planned to leave home. This was a major disappointment, and I returned it to Best Buy for a refund. Manufacturers never seem to take into account the use of cable boxes and multiple remotes when they market items such as these.

My family got the Slingbox 500 for our parents so that they can stream their Filipino Soap Operas to their iPad wherever they were (they often resort to some really bad streams from 3rd party websites). Here's my parents setup: Comcast DVR in downstairs family room connected via component to a older Sony 70" tv Dual-band Netgear router on second floor on opposite side of house. Box Setup: Slingbox was connected via HDMI and component from Comcast DVR, component was then ran to Sony TV All of the media components (DVD player, DVR, VHS and Slingbox) all sit ON TOP of the TV. The Slingbox's AC adapter cable was too short (this is probably a 5 foot distance to the top of the tv), I had to use an extension. Also the Slingbox 500 has a weird shape, so don't count on putting anything on top of it, as my dad says, they want to be on top. Slingbox configuration was done using the remote and the on-scren menu. This took longer than I expected but wasn't super difficult. My parents would have been confused, but that's why I set it up. The firmware flashing took some time though (9 minutes) and using the remote to go to the various letters was sometimes taxing. During the determination of the cable box, I chose a DCX3400, but some buttons didn't work correctly, then I saw there was a DCX3400M (don't know the difference), but that worked perfectly. I also chose to use the wireless-N 5ghz network since my parents 2.4ghz network seemed to get knocked out by a microwave. I have some bad experiences with wireless-n in the past, but this seemed to work, even between two floors at opposite ends of the house. Client Setup: I knew going into this that I would have to pay for the SlingPlayer app on the iPad (and iPhone). I'm a bit peeved at the thought of paying $15 (or $30 for two apps) after spending $300 on the hardware, but I didn't have much of a choice. The app worked fine on an iphone 4s, 5, ipad 2 and from windows. Impressions: Once it's setup, it works fairly well. My parents and I have streamed tv while in a car and while at another person's house (over AT&T 3g/4g and wifi). There have been a few times where you can't connect to your slingbox and you just have to manually power cycle it (which you can't really do remotely). I think this gift has come in handy when needing to watch a football game while at the mall or wanting to keep watching a show while you are in the car (as a passenger).

Not what I expected. I did a lot of research on Sling Box's website and they advertise it as if its a great alternative to not having to get another cable box in another room. However you can ONLY watch the same channel as the one the cable box is setup as. They did not do a good job explaining that. Why would I get the Slingbox if I have to watch the same thing that is playing in the living room??

I watch very little TV but the one thing that I do watch is sports and the fact that I have to be in front of a TV to watch is a problem especially in the summer when I don't want to be inside or on days I have to work and there is a day game. This thing works great and I can access everything from anywhere that my cable box offers including my DVR. It was easy to set up and is very easy to access from the road. To use with a tablet or smartphone the app costs an additional $15 but it was worth the one time fee, on a laptop or desktop there is no cost.
