Why the back shell?

This new generation smart cover encloses the entire iPad. I find it to make the newer iPad more bulky. What's the point in making the device slimmer and then adding all of the additional mass with a fully enclosed cover. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there is any other option available from Apple.
