It protects the screen and serves to put the iPad in sleep mode. The smart cover also folds to make a somewhat convenient stand for the iPad to allow for more convenient viewing .

Thin screen protection, exactly what I wanted

This front screen only protector preserves the thinnest factor that was so important to me. Stating the obvious, the only issue with the front-only protection is that if I'm outside I need to be more conscious about where I put down my iPad (not on rocks or the asphalt, etc) I've had no issues with scratching after a month of home/business/global travel.
