However, the iPad mini does almost everything that a phone does, so now he is no longer bugging us, plus he gets a little school work done on it. It works for what he needs it for, no complaints

I should have known better in the first place. The Apple product is always better engineered and just works better with Apple devices. In this case (no pun intended), it's the solid base the case makes for using the iPad in its horizontal orientation, useful particularly for watching media.
