I don't recommend placing an iPad mini with the Smart Folio inside a case with sharp or metal objects, as the Smart Folio scratches easily and it doesn't protect the edges of the iPad. Also, while holding the iPad with the Smart Folio open, the edges of the Folio are uncomfortable as they are somewhat sharp.
