Smart TVs often have speakers that are awful so getting a soundbar is your best option if you want to really enjoy your 50" TV. I haven't owned any Sonos equipment before but I liked the small footprint of the Sonos Beam. Setup took all of 10-15minutes. You need a TV that supports CEC and ARC (most Smart TVs have at least one HDMI port that does). You also need to install the Sonos app and create an account. I get the value in using an app for setup, but I have deducted 1 star because you always have to use the app for everything else - which is OK if it was just a speaker, but when multiple people in the household will want to connect and use it - well now everyone in the family has a Sonos account. Sound is awesome. I don't know what magic Sonos are working on the Sonos Beam to pump out such great rich sound. The bass is amazing especially as there's no external subwoofer. I did set this up to use Alexa (you make the connection in your app). Alexa works as advertised. I am not sure why Alexa is marketed as a selling point and aside from her sounding better, there's no real reason why I would want Alexa in a soundbar. I did connect my Spotify account though and the speaker also functions perfectly as an audio only unit. Very impressed.

If you want a sound bar to listen to music on your smart phone, this might be what you need. I wanted it for my TV and could NEVER get the microphone light to come on. Finally used my tablet to play sound from my TV, but it was only as good as my TV speakers themselves. Better read ALL details about how it's SUPPOSED to work before you buy it and then return it.

Hi, and thank you for your review! The microphone light will not turn on because there is no voice assistant set up which must be done through our app. We do this for privacy as if someone does not want the voice feature, this mic stays off. Also, many tv's require you to set the source of audio from the tv itself to the the external audio system. We hope this helps for future audio purchases, and apologize for the frustrating experience! john.milton

What can I say? I guess if I were an electrical engineer, and a programmer, and a professional audio technician, I might have been able to make the Sonos-Beam work. I returned the item in 3 days after I couldn't stand the frustration. I was feeling pretty bad about myself until I talked to one of your Geek Squad members who acknowledged that product is notoriously difficult to install.

unfortunately it didn't work----neither the Geek Squad nor ou independent IT provider were able to install it leading to the conclusion that it may have been defective. I took it to our home in St Helena for installation and am still up here. I return to SF next week and will bring it back for a credit

    Clarity and Easy to Setup

I had the Klipsch R-10B soundbar set up with my LG65UH8500. The bass was good and clarity too. When the Beam was announced I was immediately interested. I had a play1 in the “famcave” that I used for music and one in each of my other 2 floors. I really missed the surround sound set up I had had over 5 years ago. I splurged and got the sonos Sub, another play1, 2 play 1 stands, and ordered the Beam to create the 5.1 Setup I had missed.I also got the beam mount for under my TV. Which I recommend too. It keeps the beam an inch or so from wall to help with sound quality. Setup was easy. Did the TrueTune and it made a nice adjustment for the room. The sound was so clear and balanced. (I did adjust the bass, sub level, and surround level further). I watched a few movies and shows and although it was surround sound something was missing... Ahh I needed to change the audio to 5.1 in the settings of my XFinity X1! After fixing that, I was hearing the plane fly from left to right, front to back, etc. I tried without the Sub on and it still sounds very good with the play1s as surround. The sub makes a big difference in my opinion. (It better for $700). I tried it standalone and it was impressive on its own. No issues with lipsync or anything. I am not to big on Alexa, but it is cool to say “Alexa turn TV on in (say room the Beam is listed under- ie basement). Same with turning off. Make sure you say location. You can however change the way its listed in Alexa app to shorten or name its different. Music playback is great, I changed the setting for surrounds to Full vs Ambient. I cannot wait for Football Season. A large investment for the whole 5.1 setup, but well worth it! Sonos is great because you can add on as you go. Essentially future proof. The wife approves because of the better balance of sound and dialogue clarity. Other nice feature is you can group other rooms to playback TV audio as well. So you can hear the show/news/game playing in a completely different room where you have another Sonos. TV remote was easy to sync with Sonos app setup, now you have a remote to change volume on the sonos along with your phone, voice, and buttons on speakers... Love it. Buy it.

This has to be the worst company ever when it comes to sound. There is no Bluetooth hookup and a recent revision to their app means you can't play streaming music from Spotify. They claim to be working on it but nothing. I am furious I wasted money on a product that they have control over. I now have a box sitting on my desk that won't play music.

Thank you for the feedback about your recent Beam purchase. The Beam does not support Bluetooth music playback as our players use WiFi to control the music stream which allows you to use your phone (or other controller) without interrupting your music with notifications and the other functions of your device. The Sonos app currently supports Spotify Premium, Spotify Free, and you can even control your Sonos system directly from the Spotify app. You can find information on all Spotify functionality at https://support.sonos.com/s/article/1153?language=en_US. john.milton

Terrible. Doesn't sound anything like it did in the shop. And.... I couldn't operate it with having to have an "App" on my phone, another app I don't want. I phone their customer service. There is nothing plug 'n' play about this item, and you cannot use it without an app. Waste of my time. I took it back to the store.

I returned it because it wasn’t blue tooth compatible with my new wireless turntable. The store salesman talked me into buying it by saying it was and cost less than what I intended to buy. I returned it to a different store and bought a different brand which never has disappointed me.

This bar has a very spacious sound and music sounds very well balanced and clean. Bass on the bar is minimal however adding a subwoofer really makes this thing shine. Setup is simple and hassel free. I previously purchased a Bose soundbar 700 which currently retails for $799. I couldn’t get my music and movies to sound decent no matter how many times I equalized it. After purchasing this and the one time equalizing it’s got to be 10x better then the Bose at half the cost. Plus the airplay support and all the radio/music apps that work with Sonos. It’s truest the best solution for multi room audio.

Hi and thank you for your review! We're very sorry that this happened. Usually this is because of a setting within the tv. Sometimes tv's have to be set to send audio out through an external source. (ie a soundbar) If you did that but our product was damaged we are incredibly sorry! john.milton

    Excellent Basic Soundbar/BT Speaker...with Alexa

The Sonos Beam is an excellent BASIC soundbar that handles HDMI Audio and Video input from an external source over HDMI (PC, TV, AV Receiver) along with a wide array of wireless connectivity options over Bluetooth or AirPlay, with the added kicker of Built-in Alexa. The advantage over normal soundbars is the addition of Alexa, meaning one less Echo or Show/Spot device in any particular room with the ability to also link and control other SONOS branded speakers throughout your house to build out your audio ecosystem. As a TV soundbar, the connection over HDMI-ARC is flawless, you send your inputs in through HDMI to your TV and use the ARC channel to connect to the SONOS Beam and you get audio no matter what source you use for HDMI. If your TV doesn't have ARC or you need all your inputs, you can use a SPDIF/Optical (from your TV) to HDMI connector (to SONOS) but you lose some auto-ON and smart features. Now on to the bad. I don't think the Alexa built-in is as good as a normal Amazon Echo device. Not sure why that is, since Alexa is "cloud-based" to process your voice commands, but not only is the SONOS not as adept in deciphering my voice commands, but it also doesn't have the same functionality. For example, if I ask the SONOS Alexa to shuffle Hamilton Soundtrack, it will only play the FIRST song and then it stops. And, it is always the same first track. Do I have to build a playlist for it to play more songs? I don't know. Now, asking Alexa to play 80's songs works fine, advancing songs works as well, but it is definitely interesting why it doesn't work the same as other Echo devices. In any case, for a small room and basic set-up I think it is an excellent value proposition and the sound is better than an Echo device, but a bit muffled compared to other dedicated soundbars. For the price, I think it is a good value proposition for anyone who wants both music, TV/PC sound and Alexa in a smaller room. Definitely not something I would use for my main entertainment/viewing room.
