    Decent sound, Painfully Difficult Setup

    Posted .

The Sonos Beam is a decent sound bar with pretty good sound. However, the painful setup process and subsequent failure to stay connected to wifi makes it a two star product for me. On initial setup you must download the Sonos app for your phone and connect to wifi. In my case even though I have an apple tv, samsung tv, google chromecast and an echo dot all connected in the same room the sonos would not connect. I had to take the speaker downstairs and plug it in next to my router for a connection. And then take it back upstairs to my media room to finish setup. Once wifi was setup I had to setup the TV and this failed multiple times until finally the tv was recognized. After getting the tv connected you are instructed to 'Tune' the speaker for the room. This involves walking around the room waving your phone around while the speaker maps the room. This process failed as well so I gave up on this part. So I'm finally setup(kinda, sorta) and all is good until today when the Sonos app has lost the wifi connection and cannot find my beam. Alexa on the beam still works so obviously wifi is working on the beam and it appear the Sonos app may be the issue. So the sound works and Alexa works but I am unable to make any adjustments to bass etc without a wifi connection. I'm pretty disappointed about the setup process this was by far the most painful setup I've done on an electronic device. I like the sound and size of the beam but Sonos needs to update their app and fix this wifi issue. I'm sure not everyone is having these issues but I did and it makes me not recommend this product. If I don't get the beam connected and keep it connected I will return it and get something that works.

Great sound, horrible Alexa and streaming...

The compatibility with Alexa is basically non-existent and this should not be considered a smart speaker. When we tell Alexa to stream anything the stream will often not start at all or will last about 5 minutes and then suddenly stop. Also, has no ability to interact with other smart features in my home and Sonos requires you to use their app for any interaction with the speaker instead of the Alexa app. When it says “Alexa enables” that is a half-truth, at best. But the sound from my television is better.

Nice new option but Alexa detracts

I can't recommend this unless you have a specific size limitation and need the TV use-case. If you are just wanting music I'd go with 1's or a 5. If you need TV and can handle the larger size, the playbar would be the better bet. We have a lot of Sonos... nearly every room including two 5.1 setups and Connect zones for patio and in ceiling speakers. So I was pretty excited to see a smaller option than the Playbar. Overall a nice product but sound wise I think I'd prefer a pair of 1's or a 5. I'd say it's a wash. But with all the focus around Alexa now with Sonos I have to say it actually hurts the value of the speaker b/c the integration is problematic. Yes, Alexa works well on the speaker itself. And overall it's nifty to be able to call out music to specific rooms. The problem comes in when you have multiple rooms using Sonos and multiple users. For example... if you have the Beam in your office and are listening to music while someone in another room of your house asks an Echo Dot "alexa, what's the weather?" your Beam will mute audio playback while it answers in the other room. If you are listening to your Play5's in the kitchen and you have kids in their room asking Alexa a million questions, your audio playback mutes every time. Alexa and Sonos have the implementation concept called Ducking which trims the volume so Alexa can hear what you're saying/asking - totally makes sense in the room where your asking the question. Problem is, it's not room aware so if your Sonos and Alexa systems are integrated, playback across all rooms is interrupted with any Alexa query in any other room. It's annoying as all get out. Been a problem for 8 or more months and no acknowledgement from Sonos other than to say "thanks for feature requests." Personally we're going to decouple Alexa completely from Sonos b/c usage by family members around the house make Sonos non-usable.

Looks and sounds great. Setup was a little much

Overall this looks as good as it sounds. Really punchy without the need for a sub. The setup seemed to take a while. It needed me to remove my phone from the case and wave it around for what felt like a long time. It was strange. I am having an issue with audio steaming clearly there is hesitation to the music, still working that one out. Any advice would be welcome. It's probably just me but the tv/audio sync feature seems hard to get just right. Other than that I like it so far

    Impressive Speaker

I bought this along with two Play:1 speakers and make it a surround system. It is quite impressive! The Beam itself has impress lows and very clear vocals. With music and movies I’m impressed. Was going to Buy the bose soundbar but when playing around at Best buy I felt like this was smarter and cheaper!

    Fantastic Sound from a Soundbar

I bought this soundbar after trying many. The quality is unmatched when it comes to a standalone soundbar. Super crisp voice, deep bass, and the feel of more than just a soundbar. I honestly couldn't be happier and am so thrilled to have gotten it for $50 off Black Friday weekend.

Love this sound bar. Sonos products are terrific. I have speakers all over my house and by using a Sonos soundbar in room where these is a TV, you can play music in that room without other speakers.

    Huge disappointment

Lasted about 2 years and then went bad, I had it checked out and apparently it is a common issue with this model , along with that after about 2 months the screen would go back randomly while watching the tv or app would just stop mid show then restart and take you back to the menu

    Great Smart Speaker

Such a great sound from a relatively small speaker. I already own some sonos play 1's speakers, and this sound bar fits in the system perfectly. Installation was very easy, and the app is very easy to use.

Couldn’t be happier. The Beam delivers rich sound with plenty of bass. $399 is a lot to spend but expect a quality, versatile sound bar that operates smoothly.

    Good Soundbar

I do not have HDMI ARC, so I had to use the optional Optical audio out connection. Their app, once I figured out which one to download, provided clear installation instructions. I deducted one star because the instructions simply said “to start” download the Sonos App. Needs to be more specific because I found several of those on the iPhone App Store. I deducted another star because it cannot be powered off, unless you pull the plug. The bar goes into a low power mode instead, but that does not seem ENERGY efficient IMHO. The sound fills my 13x7 room and voices are clear. It has voice control with Alexa, but this feature will not work if your setup uses the optical audio output option instead of using HDMI ARC. I would like to have the ability to print a user manual.

We were having problems hearing the dialogue in movies without cranking up the volume. This machine does the job for us. Easy to hook up, a good price, too!

    Sonos Beam Alexa

Great Soundbar for the size. With that said DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT FOR ALEXA. Hard to get it to work, than it worked, than it stops working and than works again. Night and day difference between Sonos Beam and Amazon Echo in terms of Alexa. I just wish the Echo was a bigger speaker like the Beam. I have heard Alexa does not work well in the Sonos 1 too. I probably will keep it for Soundbar and Airplay 2 but Alexa is very disappointing and I expect a lot better quality from Sonos!!!!
