Great sound with a catch
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It sounds fantastic when the speaker works. But I noticed that it sometimes drops suddenly but will then reconnect immediately. Hopefully, it is just a bug that will get patched up.

Premium portable speaker with amazing sound
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I chose the Sonos Play portable speaker over other bluetooth options mainly because I am already invested in the Sonos ecosystem (I own the Sonos One and Era 100). What really stood out was the ability to seamlessly switch between Wi-Fi at home and Bluetooth on the go, along with the promise of better sound quality than most portable speakers. Many portable speakers compromise either sound or features, but this one truly feels like a complete package. Compared to competitors, a few things really set it apart: Smooth Wi-Fi + Bluetooth switching, easy integration with the Sonos multi-room system, built-in Alexa and voice control, wireless charging base included (super convenient). It feels more like a home speaker to carry rather than just a typical travel speaker. Fit & Portability - The size is just right, not too big or too small. It’s easy to carry using the built-in strap, feels sturdy enough for outdoor use, and has a balanced weight that gives it a premium feel. It works equally well indoors and outdoors, whether on a patio or during trips. Color & Design - The black finish looks clean, modern, and minimal. It has a premium appearance that won’t go out of style and blends nicely with most home setups. It also does a good job resisting fingerprints. Sound Quality - This is where the speaker really stands out. The sound is rich and well-balanced with deep bass for its size, clear vocals, no harsh highs, impressive volume without distortion. The dual tweeters and mid-woofer deliver a full listening experience. The default tuning sounds great, and Trueplay helps fine-tune the audio based on your space. Battery Life - Battery performance is excellent. It easily lasts a full day (up to 24 hours) at moderate volume. The charging dock makes it effortless, just place it back when you’re done. The replaceable battery is also a big plus for long-term use. Ease of Setup & Use - Setup is quick and straightforward. The app-guided process feels very polished (similar to Apple products), automatically detects Wi-Fi, and integrates smoothly. Trueplay setup is especially simple on iPhone. Switching between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth is seamless and very convenient. Build Quality & Durability - The speaker feels solid and well-built. With an IP67 rating, it’s waterproof and dustproof, making it great for outdoor use. The durable design adds confidence when carrying it around. Value for Money - It is definitely on the pricier side, but you’re paying for excellent sound quality, premium design and durability, smart features with voice assistants, dual connectivity (Wi-Fi + Bluetooth) and included charging base. If you’re looking for a basic speaker, there are cheaper options. But if you want high-quality sound with flexibility and premium features, this is worth it. Pros Excellent sound with strong bass Seamless Wi-Fi and Bluetooth switching Premium and durable (IP67 rated) Long battery life with charging base Easy and smooth setup Voice assistant support Portable yet powerful Cons Expensive compared to most portable speakers Power adapter not included No speakerphone feature Volume controls could be better True stereo requires two speakers Overall, this is a high-end portable speaker that truly feels like a home speaker you can take anywhere. If sound quality, ease of use, and ecosystem integration matter to you, it’s a great investment. If you’re just looking for something simpler, this might be more than you need.

Big sound, very small form factor
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was in the market for a portable speaker that I could take outside while I play pickleball with my friends. I researched several on the market but when Sonos announced they were releasing once named the Play, I couldn't resist. Sonos has an exceptional track record and reputation, and after using the Play for a short while, I already see their excellence shining through. The box includes not only the Play speaker unit but a charging base, which I love. Im so glad I didn't have to buy it separately. The Play is quite small and portable, coming in at 4.5" wide, 7.5" tall and 3" deep. The top of the speaker features a few touch buttons that control the volume, play/pause/ffwd/rew and voice control which you need to set up in the app. The back of the unit has a power button, a bluetooth pair button, a microphone on/off switch, a USB C port as well as a small carry loop which I read can be removed if you like. Even though the unit is small, it's a bit heavy for my liking but the offset of that is that the unit can be used to charge external devices via the USB C port on the back which is a very surprising feature. Another great function of that USB C port is that it can be used as a line-in where you can connect a turntable or other external players directly to the speaker. I love all the options it offers. Functionality wise, the Play's battery is listed to last about 24 hours which is very generous but I keep it on the charging base when not in use so I doubt I'll ever have issue of it running out of battery power. Other nice features are that it is rated IP67 waterproof and Sonos also states it's drop resistant so using it outdoors won't be an issue. I highly recommend connecting it to the Sonos app to get full functionality and features. The Play is also WIFI equipped or can be connected to players via the traditional Bluetooth. The WIFI set up is a bit awkward and if using via WIFI, you have to assign a music service or music folder for playback (as far as I can tell and I could be wrong). Playing music via Bluetooth is much easier and you can play music from your iPhone or android phone like usual. The Play offers automatic TruePlay which is Sonos's self-optimizing tech. Make sure you turn the microphone switch on the back of the speaker to "ON" for this to work. It auto adjusts the Play's sound to best fit the location it was placed in. I love this function and tested it several times and in several locations. It's pretty amazing. There is an also a very limited EQ option to fine tune the treble and bass if you feel the factory sound settings are not up to snuff. As with most Sonos speakers, you can link several Sonos speakers to the Play and I linked it my Sonos Era 100 SL for a stereo effect. I also played music in 2 different rooms when I moved the Play into my bedroom..it was great while I cleaned my place and was back and forth between rooms. Sound-wise, the unit is amazing. My music was clear, separated and the bass wasn't muddy. The Play provided that 360 degree-feel like many of the current cylindrical portable speakers do. It was powerful but not harsh and it should be just fine filling a room with music. It gets very loud...I only tested it once and that was enough. My pickleball crew really appreciate the Play and I will be using it regularly on court. Nice work Sonos, I'm happily impressed!!

SONOS hits another one out of the park!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sonos Play is the newest addition to the Sonos lineup. This small speaker sounds better than any other portable I own, and I have a few. When I first received the Play I have to say I was hopeful that the speaker would have good sound for the size of the enclosure and boy was I surprised. The Sonos Play continues to impress when it comes to the design and build quality. The speaker is sleek and sophisticated. On the front you have this beautifully implemented large grille and on the back you have physical buttons which operate the Bluetooth connection, voice assistant capability, and the power button. There is also a USB-C port that you can use to charge the speaker or use as a line in with the line-in adapter that SONOS sells. In the build quality department, the Play does not disappoint. I have to say this speaker is small, but it feels incredibly solid and has a decent amount of weight to it. It feels like the entire speaker screams quality. This speaker is surely made of high-quality materials. In the box you will find the SONOS Play and the charging cradle, which does NOT include a USB-C adapter. This is not surprising, but not great either for the price of this speaker. Disclaimer: I am an avid SONOS user/fan. I completely believe in the products with every aspect. Build quality, sound quality, connectivity, and ease of use are all the best of any home audio system I have ever owned. I love the ability to play anything I want in any room or have the same song playing throughout my entire house. It is such cool thing to have people over and play some background music and have every room in the house playing the same thing at the same time. It is like a continuous experience of music. Using the Multi-room playback is easy using the SONOS App. You can select your system which initially will be the speaker or room (depending how you have named your speakers) and then you can select the “Source” which can be Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora, Etc. You have so many choices for streaming music over the internet directly to your speaker. This means that each speaker is self sufficient and does not rely on another device or phone to play music once the source is selected. Why is this important? Have ever hosted a BBQ or party and used your phone to play music on a Bluetooth speaker and then had to run to the store or received a phone call and the music for the party just stopped!!. Well with SONOS you will never have to worry about that again. It is independent and self sustained. Now to the Sound quality. I am utterly and joyfully impressed by the sound that comes out of this little speaker. The Play has clean crisp highs, punchy mids, and deep bass. I want to emphasize that the midranges “punchiness” is a big contributor to why this speaker sounds so good. The midrange combined with the deep frequencies just make this speaker sound like a speaker normally twice, if not three times the size and it just continuously surprises me every time I listen to it. Even with the volume all the way up to 100%, it produces LOUD, clear, and undistorted music (you will lose a little bass at this volume). There are two main types of wireless connectivity with the Play, WiFi and Bluetooth. This is something that further increases the usability of the Play. You can use it either in or around your home utilizing your home network (WiFi), or you can take it with you while you're out and about and can connect to your phone independently via Bluetooth. The speaker sounds amazing in either mode! There is also the ability to hook up Amazon Alexa via the SONOS app. Just ensure the switch on the back of the speaker is in the “ON” position and you will be able to control the lights in your house (via smart plugs) or raise/lower the volume of a smart connected TV. It’s something I have been using for a while on my other speakers and it’s a welcome addition to see it on this mobile speaker. Having the ability to use voice assistants on SONOS speakers enables me to have Alexa in every room in my home without having to own a separate device for each room. This is good for keeping the clutter down and saves you some money at the same time. Battery life is also a huge factor in choosing to purchase a speaker like this. So far I have been using the speaker for about 2 weeks and the battery life appears to be in spec with what SONOS claims. I’ve been listening at about 40-60% volume and the battery has lasted about 3 days until I needed to charge it up again. I did not time each day, but I will say I used it each day for a considerable amount of time. It’s very good and I have no complaints. So the multi-room playback is by far the biggest reason you would have to invest in the SONOS ecosystem. It’s by far not the ONLY reason, just the BIGGEST reason. As mentioned above, there are so many amazing qualities this speaker has, and honestly most of SONOS speakers have. I will forever be a true SONOS believer and will continue to invest in their products because I TRUST them, as a company, as a product, and as an idea.

Versatile High-Quality Stereo Smart Speaker
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sonos Play is a smart speaker that can also be a component in a home/theater sound system. It's portable, waterproof, dustproof and has a replaceable battery. It comes with a charging pad with attached USB-C cable. It also has a USB-C port so doubles as a charging station. The Play is actually a small stereo system with 2 tweeters and a midwoofer and the sound is excellent. Setup was very easy, just turn it on and scan the QR code in the Set Up guide. The Play is versatile with many convenience features. The best feature is its Wi-Fi connectivity. You can play it anywhere in your home where you have Wi-Fi. It can be voice controlled with Sonos voice or Alexa, with the Sonos app, or with manual controls on the unit itself. You can add any number or type of Sonos speakers to build a whole home or theater sound system. On the go connect with Bluetooth and pair up to 4 speakers (Sonos Play or Move 2 speakers). With the Sonos mobile app, you can add music services, group speakers, turn on/off Trueplay (sound optimization based on environment), access treble/bass equalizer, set up a stereo pair (specific Sonos speaker models) and designate favorites. You can also add your own music library either uploaded to a music service like Apple Music or from your network attached storage (NAS) if you have one. I don't have an Apple or any other subscription, but I do have an NAS, but I wasn't able to connect to it through the Sonos app my mobile device. However, Sonos also has a PC app that is basically an Audio Media Player, and I was able to attach to my NAS through that app, and the connection was automatically updated to the Sonos app on my phone. Through the PC app you can create playlists from your own music library to play on your Sonos Play. There are literally a hundred different music services you can add to Sonos including all the popular ones - Amazon, Apple, iHeart, TuneIn, YouTube Music, and their own, Sonos Radio. Between all the services there's hundreds of radio stations and live radio to choose from. Sonos voice control is very basic but adds convenience. You can only ask it to play Sonos Radio selections; it isn't able to access any of the other streaming services. But you can tell it to stop playing anything, ask it to turn volume up/down, go to next or previous in your library or a playlist, group or ungroup speakers, or ask it to play on a specific speaker or group of speakers. You can also ask it for your local weather by adding your location to the app. Battery life is supposed to be 24 hours, but I'm skeptical of that. I had it charged to 100% and after a morning and afternoon of playing it's down to 58% and that was with Battery Saver and Wi-Fi power save turned on. Based on my usage I'd say 12 hours is a more realistic expectation. With those power savers turned on, the speaker turns off after 30 minutes of inactivity. In sum this is a versatile high-quality speaker that produces excellent rich sound, it's portable (it even has a carrying loop/strap), and with both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity you can play it anywhere inside your home or outside or make it part of a home system.

Clean, Well designed
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’ve spent a good amount of time with the Sonos Play and I paired it with the Sonos Era 100 SL. Gotta say, this setup shows that Sonos sets the bar for home audio. I have a number of speakers and various setups in different rooms of my house. These days, I feel like it’s sometimes hard to find good solid tech that also offers good sound (EVEN when you spend a decent amount). No, Sonos isn’t cheap, but it freaking works! Starting with the Play itself, the sound quality is exactly what you want out of a speaker in this class. It’s clean, balanced, and fills the room. The bass has a nice presence without overpowering everything else, the mids are clear and detailed—vocals in particular sound natural—and the highs stay crisp without getting harsh. Ok, now let’s add the Era 100 SL to the mix. Now we’ve got a wider, more immersive feel with better separation between instruments, and it just makes everything sound more alive. You can use them as a stereo pair or spread them across rooms, either way, smooth synchronization and it’s just fun. Both speakers get me to my happy place. They handle volume like I want. Push them and don’t worry about distortion or break down. It all stays controlled and consistent, which is something a lot of speakers struggle with once you get past moderate listening levels. Design-wise, this is classic Sonos. Clean, minimal, and premium without being flashy. They fit into just about any space without drawing too much attention, but still look like high-end pieces when you notice them. Setup is quick and painless, especially if you’re already familiar with the Sonos app, and getting both speakers connected and working together takes almost no effort. Love. It. Sonos is keeping up with the need for a strong ecosystem. Pairing the Era SL with the Play is seamless, and once everything is set up, it just works. Multi-room audio, grouping speakers, and controlling everything from your phone is smooth and reliable, which makes a HUGE difference in everyday use, particularly if you’re like me and have a two story home.

Ok speaker, on expensive side.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I got this Sonos Play to test because I wanted to use it with an older projector I have in my basement. The projector is temperamental and does not blutooth well with things, and I wish this was the exception, but it is not. That being said, I had some familiarity with Sonos and really liked the sound and the connectivity with wifi and my most use voice assistant Alexa. The connection and set up to that was great, works well. It immediately connected to my streaming service via that. As for the Sonos assistant, I played with it, and it just doesn't work as well for me, and the voice I did not care for. Plus, I don't want to have to set up my content with another 3rd party app. Now I did have experience with the sound of these before, and I have not only the Play but the Era 100 to try and make a stereo pair for my set up. I like the Play because it can move and the battery life is all good for all day, and around the house I lose no signal. I take this outside for use on my deck where I don't have a fixed speaker for streaming. For my theater projector, I wanted to make this a stereo pair, and I cannot for the life of me get that function to work. I've looked online and followed the website instructions, nothing, says no compatable pair. That being said, I put these both into the same room and they play together and that works ok when using streaming service. A nice feature here is roomed together on blutooth these will share the signal and that sounds great with the two speakers going on either side of the room. I hooked it to my phone no issues with bluetooth connection. The Play speaker has a robust bass with a pseudo-surround effect coming from one speaker. The two in a pair do quite well and dialogue us crisp sound from my projector. Solo this could handle the dialogue and sound by itself if it wanted. They take up a lot less footprint than my old speaker I used for this. That being said I am frustrated I had to purchase special Sonos line in usb-c line in adapters. I have 4 extra 3.5mm to usb-c laying around the house from phones that all work well for them, but this needs the proprietary chip in the dongle to decode. That is how I ultimately connected my projector is by 3.5mm jack to usb c. I split the signal between the output, so I know I won't have a delay or mess up with one connecting and one not. I did have issues with getting those dongles, partially the shippers fault, but at least sonos had direct humans to talk to about getting things re-shipped, though not without trying to put an AI assistant barrier upfirst. Overall, this is a very expensive small speaker. Sound wise, top notch, function wise, I think there are several that are around a hundred or more less that would do the same as this with very good sound. I have to give this 3 out of 5. If I could give a ½ star 3.5 is where I would land. The cost plus connectivity is where I fault this. I feel the sound and portability is a big plus. I would hesitantly reccomend these to my friends, only if they did there research first.

Great speaker with an awesome sound
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sonos Play is a great Bluetooth speaker with an awesome sound and portable. It comes very well packaged. Inside the box you get the speaker itself, a very long charging dock with a USB-C connector at the end of the cable. The speaker supports Sonos Voice Control, Apple AirPlay and it’s made for iPhone, iPad and iPod. The buttons on the top of the speaker are raised by sight and touch. However, it can be slightly difficult to see them because they’re somewhat small and they’re also the same color and material as the top of the speaker. On the back of the speaker, you have a Power button, a Bluetooth sync button, and a toggle to turn the voice control feature on or off. There’s also a USB-C port that allows you to charge the speaker with a USB-C cable in case you aren’t able to use the charging dock, and a nice strap loop for carrying. The speaker has a nice grippy texture to it and a bit of weight to it as well. The speaker was very easy to setup using the Sonos mobile app. There was an update for the speaker during the setup process. With the speaker being able to support AirPlay I am able to pair it with my Apple HomePod speakers at the same time. This allows me to create a surround sound while listening to music. I can control the volume of each speaker in the Control Center of my iPhone. The speaker has a very rich sound. I’m able to adjust the EQ settings for Treble and Bass using the Sonos app when it’s using WiFi mode. I haven’t found a way to adjust the EQ if it’s used in Bluetooth only mode. I’m not sure if it supports it, because I’ve been unable to connect the app to the speaker when it’s in Bluetooth mode; only when it’s in WiFi mode. The voice assistants that it supports in the Sonos app are Sonos Voice Control and Amazon Alexa. I was hoping I would see an option for Siri. Overall, this is a great sound speaker that I’ve enjoyed using.

Flexible Powerhouse
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sonos Play speaker is an excellent addition to my Sonos household. While marketed as a portable speaker, its real strength is how seamlessly it integrates with my existing Sonos setup. In my home I have a Sonos Arc for television audio, and IKEA Symfonisk speakers throughout the house, and a Symfonisk in the garage. The Sonos Play is used most in the kitchen and the back yard. I the sync the Sonos play to the rest of my Sonos speakers and I get music flowing through the entirety of my home.. It's a small thing but having music follow you throughout your entire home when you're in and out of the house is a very nice experience. This Sonos Play sits on its charging dock/pad in my kitchen and goes with me into the backyard or when I go to the beach or park with my family. The sound quality is also impressive for a portable device. The Play is designed with multiple digital amplifiers and a dedicated mid-woofer and tweeters that produce balanced stereo sound with strong bass and clear vocals. Automatic tuning technology adjusts the sound based on the environment. The Sonos Play yields up to 24 hours of playback and an IP67 waterproof and dustproof rating, the speaker is built to be used in moist areas such as kitchen, bathrooms, and outdoors. I often forget to charge up my phone and I really enjoy being able to use the Sonos Play as a usb c power and for those times I forget to charge my phone. Ultimately, the Sonos Play works best not just as a portable speaker but as a flexible extension of the Sonos ecosystem. For homes like mine that are already equipped with Sonos devices you will use the Play over your WiFi and enjoy whole home audio and then take the Sonos play when on the go and use the Bluetooth functionality and top off your phone hang your Sonos Play as a power bank.

Sounds great - lasts long
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been bought into the Sonos ecosystem for quite a few years. My new Sonos Play speaker is my 15th Sonos device I've set up in my home. I have 3 Ones, 3 One SLs, 1 Sub, 2 Roams, 2 AMPs, 2 PORTs, 1 Era 100 SL, and the Play. They all work together seamlessly and easily using the Android or iOS app on a phone or tablet. The desktop Sonos software also works fine. It's pretty intuitive using the app to figure out what music to play, and on what Sonos device(s) it should be played. I use Plex to make playlists from my local media files, and I stream from Tidal and Amazon Music. I can also play music from SiriusXM since I am a subscriber for my car and the streaming app is free with any car subscription. The app also makes it easy to group devices or to control device configuration. Set volume, EQ, combine with another speaker to make a stereo pair, etc. I set up my play in a group where my 2 Roams are linked as a stereo pair. They are all battery powered. I put the pair of Roams on my deck and put the Play on a table by my pool and am surrounded by awesome sound. The batteries last all day, in fact, I've never actually run them out. If I take the Play too far away from the house and it can't connect to wifi, it's handy to connect to my phone using bluetooth which works great. Only minor quibble is that there's no USB charger brick included, and you need one to charge the Play either directly or on its base. It says it requires at least an 18W charger but that will be glacially slow. I use a 65W PD USB-C charger that was about $15 and it works great. Overall, this is a great addition to an existing Sonos setup or a good way to get into it.
