    Annoying buzzing with deep tones

I have my tv sitting on top of the play base, as it was designed for, but whenever there are deep tones the speaker gives off an annoying buzzing. An online search suggested it was coming from my tv vibrating and when I put my hand on the tv the buzzing stops. For $700 I shouldn’t have to rig my equipment to get it to work properly. I’ll be returning this product.

    Why Use an Optic Cable?

OK sound but expected more from SONOS. Wish I had known about the wimpy optic cable being part of the setup versus the use of HDMI cable. Optic cable is springy and often disconnects from the TV.

I had a Samsung soundbar but this takes my listening experience to a new level. Get the subwoofer + Playbase combo if you can afford it! Expensive but it's an audio experience that won't depreciate over time.

Easy to connect and set up. Music sounds ok but highs cut off. Acceptable but not great. Same problem with dialogue in movies which is unacceptable. Returned item without issue. Thx for tha best buy

    After One Year

I’ve always wanted my home theater/audio system for myself. I purchased the playbase last year, just that unit. I love it. Over time. With the right CALIBRATION, yes, configuration is key. No matter what speaker system you buy, to just plug it in and watch is wrong. And I think this system in a way portrays to the naive (myself) buyer that you do it that way. Truetone is great, but you have to do it right. Take care in how you adjust your settings and you can really dial it in nicely. Room choice is important as well. I have an open concept living room, I have to take more into consideration to how my system will sound when making adjustments. Movies are a rush and music is crisp and clean. I love cooking and putting on Jazz or some R&B and FEELING the music. (Even more so when adding the 3 other units) every unit plays in harmony. Many friends have complimented the setup. Since then I’ve added 2 play 1’s and the SUB. It was an investment but well worth it. Even just the two play 1’s, the playbase has nice clean base but nothing crazy. Great distribution of sound for a simulated surround experience, it’s not a TRUE surround, it’s simulated but don’t fool yourself it does a great job. Adding the SUB was a excellent choice because it freed up some room for the playbase to shine. Allowing it to focus on more high and mids instead of doing it all in it’s just over 2” housing. Recently I’ve gotten into Game of Thrones. Halfway through season 6 there are some battle scenes. The playbase is great watching these battles. But one day after work I got the 1’s and the SUB. I don’t know why I haven’t done it before. My living room shakes, the clashing of swords and screams of battle fill the room with great clarity and power. I’m in love. But do it right! Take the time to study the room you put your setup in and take note on how different configurations make truetone work differently. I love coming home to a theater like experience and watching my favorite films.

Amazing sound ...really...especially that I got this open box and its almost in perfect condition. Its perfect for smaller living rooms, bedrooms all by itself..very good base. I still wonder how it produces such a deep base sound with its form factor. I do think at 80 to 100 percent volume base is not keeping up as well and its not really as easy to set up as your TV speakers (LG OLED B7). HDMI wouldve been so much easier.

The playbase seems out dated. They need to add HDMI to bring this up to date with the Beam and newer Sonos products.

    Playbase vs Playbar

    Posted .

I've been in the market for a new home theatre sound system, one that also performed well with music as it did with tv/movies. I decided that I wanted to go with the Sonos eco-system due to the quality of sound, simplicity, and overall very impressive reviews. What immediately plagued me next was the introduction of the Playbase. Up until now after numerous trips to Best Buy and other Audio/Video stores I was pretty set on getting the Playbar. The Playbase however immediately sparked my interest due to the fact that it was a brand new entry from Sonos and that my tv would fit perfectly over the base (Sony XBR65x900E) plus the Playbase in white looked aesthetically pleasing to me. Much more so than the outdated, clunky look of the Playbar. So that was it, I decided to build my set up around the Playbase. I went back to Best Buy to test it out before my purchase. I was immediately confused by what I was hearing. The Playbase sounded inferior to the Playbar. Every single review I read stated that they sounded almost identical except the Playbase was superior due to it's added sub. That didn't matter to me because I was already committed on purchasing the Sonos Sub. The only way to know for sure was to bring these baby's home. I purchased the Playbase and the sub. I immediately set up Trueplay along with the sub and played a few songs on it. I was not happy, the music sounded flat and the highs/mids/lows sounded bunched up together. The sound didn't fill my living room like I imagined it. I couldn't really FEEL the music (some of you know what I'm talking about, when I say this). Not the way a system that costs $700 should anyway. The Playbase still had a good amount of lows coming out of it even with the Sub connected. On a side note the Sub is amazing, handled even the slightest low frequency with detail and control. Which leads me to the next issue. The lows coming from the sub were significantly of better quality than the mids and highs that were being out put by the Playbase. It just didn't blend well together as if they were not made to work together cohesively. Then I tested out some tv shows and movies. It sounded better and I was pleased, though not ready to bust out of my pants excited. The dialogue was clear but I didn't really get the "surround" sound effect. Again, the sub overshadowed everything that was coming out of the Playbase. So after testing the Playbase out for a week I was a little bummed out, possibly considering even not going with Sonos anymore. Still I remember being really impressed with all the demos I heard with the Playbar at the stores. So I went to Best Buy and picked up the Playbar came home and set it up. My suspicions were in fact true, the Playbar was by far the superior product. The sound filled my room, possibly by the bigger sized tweets and that they face out in a angle rather than straight out like the Playbase. It didn't matter that the Playbase has an extra speaker. This was the sound that impressed me in my numerous visits and what sold me to Sonos. I played the same songs and this time around I felt the music. It justified the price tag. It blended with the sub so well as if they were a match made in heaven. The thousands of positive reviews for the Playbar can't be wrong, though mark my words. The Playbase will without a doubt be rated much lower as time passes. I can say without a doubt that while the Playbar sounds like a premium sound system the Playbase sounds like a nice upgrade to to your tv speakers, but why pay $700 for that? Overall I feel a little bittersweet about my findings. The Playbase fit better for my set up and looks better. I wish it really did sound the same. It just doesn't. Not by a long shot. Bottom line: if you plan to buy the sub get the Playbar. The Playbase as many reviews have stated is a head scratcher. I wish they just updated the Playbar. I hope this helps those that are planning to buy into the Sonos eco system and I also hope this helps those who already own a Playbar that's eyeing the new Playbase. If you don't have the sub, get it. FYI: Several Best Buy employees also agreed to my assessment and agreed that the Playbar had a much fuller sound. I'm sure Sonos wants people to believe that the Playbase is just as good but this just not true.

I got the Playbase for a small-room TV setup. Before trying it, I was a little wary of the treble issue: as noted by some reviewers and users, the treble can apparently sometimes be discordantly sibilant, even to the point of distraction. I'm happy to say I did not encounter this issue at all. I'm very happy with the Playbase. Works great out of the box, had no problems controlling with my TV remote, and the sound is really excellent. Sonos' engineers really deserve a kudos for this thing. The soundstage is full and warm, and very present. There's a surprising amount of bass in this thing too for such a tiny subwoofer. Highly recommended.

I own two playbase speakers, a black and a white one. I also own many other sonos speakers. I enjoy sonos speakers because they sound very good and are easy to use. Both playbase speakers fit in that same mold. The only downside of the playbase speakers is that the setup of the speakers is much more difficult than other Sonos speakers. I do not know why that is, but I felt I should tell others even if you own other sonos speakers, the setup of the playbase speakers based on my personal experiences may be much more difficult than you'd expect. I had to call customer service to solve my setup/wifi connection issues with one of the playbase speakers, which is the opposite of my usual seamless experiences of setting up other sonos speakers.

The best system you can get for wifi music

The Sonos system is hands down the best thing out there. Everything is easily controllable from your phone. It’s all wifi based (and optional Bluetooth on the Move device) so you’re not messing around with Bluetooth pairing. There are very few, if any, glitches. The phone app is easy to use and full control of all devices and all music sources is just a touch of your cell phone. Sound quality for the PlayBase is quite good. There may be competitors with better sound, but none will have the technology that provides this kind of convenience as an overall system. As to sound, I clung to my 1980’s audiophile amps and speakers for decades. It was difficult to let go of them, but I needed to clean up all the clutter and wires, and gigantic speakers in my living room. While the Playbase may not exactly replicate the quality of a 5.1 dual amp system, it is way beyond my expectations and easily worth the trade-off given all the space I’ve recovered and all the complexity I’ve removed. It appears that wifi audio is finally viable. SONOS is a bit vague about the specs on their devices (particularly the size of the speakers inside the devices). But worry not. They sound big. Finally, these are available on AMZN, Best Buy, and of course SONOS’s web site. There is no reason to buy thru AMZN as the price will actually come up a bit lower at SONOS (due to taxes, depending on where you are). And there’s no reason to have AMZN take a cut of the profits. SONOS is fast with their shipping and their customer service for returns is excellent. If you want to see the devices in person, go to Best Buy and purchase there.

I've went through almost all of Sonos home theater products and trust me on this one. You want a dynamic sound without a dynamic price, you don't need everything they offer to have a great home theater sound. For a modest sized bedroom and even a larger living room just pair a Sonos playbase with 2 of their play 3 speakers. It will be more than enough ,has great lows and highs and very clear mid-range no matter how high the volume is. Brand new with the play 3 and playbase $1200, open box excellent condition could be as low as $1,000. No need to spend almost $2,000 for one room. Finally the playbase is superior to the playbar. Mid-range and high's are the same, but the woofer speaker in the playbase is superior to the one in the playbar. P.S. go through retail me not.com website and then to best buy because you'll get reward $'s that way. I've earned $200 just this year with purchases from Best buy going through retailmenot.com first.

We have recently converted from a BOSEACOUSTIMASS 10 to Sonos Surround and I can not even begin to describe the difference of clarity, crisp sound, no lagging etc.... SONOS is absolutely top notch in my opinion comparing it with BOSE. We started out with just buying the Play 5 speaker, and was very impressed with the sound. From there we added the Playbase and another Play 5 speaker. Not once have we regretted the change! The next purchase will be the Sub, which I know is just going to intensify the already beautiful sound this system creates!

I have several Sonos speakers including the PlayBase, Play One, Three and a subwoofer. In general, I like Sonos products because they are easy to set-up and the app is good. I'm on my second PlayBase now because the wireless card broke in my first one and would not connect to my network. I only realized it when I couldn't see it as part of one of my rooms. I've read lots of complaints about the wireless card failing in the PlayBase so keep that in mind. Sonos sent me a new one but their customer service is a pain. You can't get anyone on the phone and you have to do everything via email which leads to each email being answered by a differed person. You then have to send them a diagnostic and wait for them to tell you what you already know: the wireless card is bad. That starts a separate return shipping process and if you don't have the original box you have to pay to put the thing in something to send it back via UPS. I like the sound but I don't think it is as rich as the PlayBar even with a separate subwoofer but the PlayBase just works better if you don't have the TV mounted on the wall. If I had to do it over again I would probably go with the PlayBar.

I have been stalking Sonos products for a while and was pumped when the playbar came out as it was advertised as a stand alone with better bass that did not need a subwoofer. While it does have a better bass than the playbar, it is still insufficient. The sound does have great fidelity and it fills the room well. I was ultimately underwhelmed though. After buying the playbase, it made me miss my current vizio that I got for $300. I ultimately ended up returning it. I am sure that a combo of it with the subwoofer would be impressive, but I have now even read a lot of reviews that favor the playbar over the playbase in combination with the subwoofer.

Ordered a playbase on a hunch that it would rock, absolutely does not. Out of the box hooked up quick but spent some time trying to get voices synced. After further testing, found that the playbase sounds flat (no pun intended) with music, TV audio sounds fair for a general upgrade if you're not expecting a lot. I certainly did for 700 bucks. I'd say it sounds more like a 400 dollar product. The cherry on top is at 85-90% volume the playbase volume fluctuates high/low. I'd imagine that's due to design and driver size however that max volume could've been dialed down by Sonos. Don't waste your money on this one. Other Sonos products are much more impressive.
