As a long time Sonos user I was excited to get the newly released Ray Soundbar with WiFi. It's Sonos' latest soundbar release and is touted as a compact solution that's easy to setup and use. This is certainly the case as it literally takes just a few minutes to setup and use with a TV or as a speaker for music or gaming. Although it's diminutive in size, the sound is fantastic as expected from a Sonos speaker. Packaging - more and more consumer electronics companies are moving to recycled/recyclable packaging and Sonos has jumped on that wagon. The Ray is packaged very well and arrived in perfect condition. Included in the box is the Ray, power cord, optical cord and instructions. Build Quality - the Ray is definitely a compact soundbar weighing in at a little over 4 lbs. and measuring just 22" wide. The speakers are forward facing so based on that and the size this soundbar can be placed in a TV console, hung on a wall (with adapter, not included) or even on a desktop for gaming use. Although it's compact, the build quality is very impressive and as expected from Sonos. There are flush touch controls on the top of the unit and only an ethernet, optical and power connections. There's also an indicator light which can be toggled on/off with the Sonos app. Setup - As advertised by Sonos the Ray is super easy to setup and and use. Simply connect the optical and power cables, download the S2 Sonos app and begin the setup. It took about 2-3 minutes from unboxing to connected and running on my Vizio TV. Once up and running, the Ray is configureable through the S2 app. Sound such as bass and treble can be adjusted with the "EQ" and Trueplay allows the user to customize the sound based on the room the Ray is located in. Status light and lights for the touch controls are also adjustable in the app. Remote control setup is also managed with the app...and this is one area I was a bit let down. As the Ray is only able to connect to a TV with an optical audio cable, it only supports IR (infrared) remote controls. The remote for my Vizio TV is an RF and does not support the Ray. Sound Quality - This is where the Ray really shines. I am blown away by the BIG sound that comes out of such a compact soundbar. For use with TV, Sonos worked with Hollywood sound engineers to develop a speaker that delivers crisp and understandable dialogue. There's also an adjustment toggle in the app, and it works. With the optical audio cable, TV dialogue synced perfectly and no adjust meant was needed. Definitely use the Trueplay option and customize the Ray for your room(s). It creates a truly immersive sound experience! For music, the rich bass and crisp treble is amazing for such a small set up. I find myself using the Ray more and more for listening to Sonos Music instead of watching TV...the sound is that impressive. Pros: - BIG sound in a compact design - Sonos build quality - Sonos S2 app is easy to use and allows for customization - Trueplay - the immersive sound experience is incredible - Easy to setup and operate Cons: - My Vizio RF remote is not supported by the Ray - As a longtime Sonos user, it's a bit frustrating having to use S1 and S2 apps to run my hardware - this is not a knock on the Ray but on Sonos' development decisions. The Sonos Ray is an amazing compact WiFi Soundbar that puts out BIG sound! I would highly recommend it for anyone looking to add or upgrade a soundbar for TV, music or gaming, this thing rocks!

Hi, and thank you for your review! We're glad you love the Sonos Ray so far! Such a detailed review and we appreciate the feedback.

We wanted to address your S1 concern. We know this can be inconvenient, however it was a choice that needed to be made. Sort of think of it like your phone from 2007 running the software that was made for your new phone. The hardware wouldn't be able to handle the processing power needed to run well. It's the same with our speakers. They all have computers in them. If we didn't transition to the S2 platform, and sunset our older products, we would not have been able to innovate and continue to add the new features we've been adding. It really was a tough decision and we know to some a very inconvenient one, but one that had to be made. We are offering industry leading up to 30% off codes if you decide you want to upgrade. You can find out what products are available for upgrade by logging into your Sonos account. We hope this shed a little bit of light on our reasoning for transition to the S2 platform. Keep listening out loud and enjoying your Sonos! john.milton

We ended up returning this sound bar. First, when GS went to install it, the mounting bracket was not included. We tried the tv with it's own sound and are satisfied for now. May look for sound bar later

This is about Best Buy, not the Sonos Ray. They sent the product with a missing plug, three chats and two phone calls later, I've been lied to, given the run around, and not sent the missing part. All I asked for was the part. They offered a new Ray, then cancelled the offer without telling me. They then offered a full refund. Weird but OK, all I wanted was the plug. I said OK. They never refunded me anything. I was lied to in the chat. The phone was no better. Run from Best Buy.... Run as fast as you can!

It sounds like you're having trouble connecting your Sonos Ray to your TV. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

      Check Connection Ports:

The Sonos Ray should connect to your TV via an optical audio cable. Ensure that your TV has an optical audio output port (often labeled "Optical" or "Digital Audio Out"). If your TV doesn't have this port, you might need a different soundbar or an adapter to connect.
      Verify the Optical Cable Connection:

Ensure the optical cable is securely plugged into both the Sonos Ray and the TV. The cable should click into place.
      Select the Correct Input:

On your TV, go to the audio settings and make sure the audio output is set to "Optical" or "Digital Audio Out" rather than the TV's internal speakers.TV Compatibility:

Verify that your TV's optical output settings are compatible with the Sonos Ray. Some TVs have settings for audio formats that might need adjustment.

If these steps don’t resolve the issue, it might be helpful to consult the Sonos support website at support.sonos.com or contact their customer service for further assistance.

I hope this addresses your concern! john.milton

It was a great speaker and it had the features I needed but we returned it because the price of the Sonos Arc came down significantly for the holiday season and that was what I truly wanted. I did strongly consider keeping this and selling my old Sonos Playbar but I really like that speaker.

I love the Sonos brand and all of the speakers but def felt like i may have bought it for just that reason, its no more special than the others and unless you are always home youll hear it when you set jt up to sound for your tv or devices.

    Set Up Issues

When setting up the soundbar, the app gets to the point where you need to set up your TV remote. When trying to set that up, that app consistently fails. Called customer service and they let me know it’s a known issue and there is no fix. IR remotes can not be paired currently, and you would have to use the app or buttons to change volumn. All I was told is “engineering is working on it”. So be prepared to pay a premium price and an essentially unusable product. Other users are reporting similar problems lately, looking at other . So for now, look elsewhere. Silver lining is you can get sound out of it.

    Sonos - Ray Soundbar Static

I chose this soundbar due to its ability to be mounted on the TV wall mount under the TV. Packaging was nice and the unit was well protected with all of the required components. Once mounted the App was used to complete the set up and that was straight forward. Unfortunately after just a week of use the unit developed static in the playback sound. None of the settings would compensate for the static even though a fiber optic was used as the signal source. The unit was returned as defective for a full refund. To date I have not found another unit to install.

There are a lot of connection issues with our SONY-TV, ROKU Box. We have to delete and add the SONOS speakers and Ray Bar to get some connectivity, until the next burp.
