||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was excited and the SONOS Ray felt very short of my expectations. I was replacing a Samsung sound bar so did a before and after test. The 2 year old sound bar was bette and much cheaper. I returned the Ray and purchased the Beam. Much happy!

Great and Small Speaker
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you are looking for bells and whistles, look at a higher price range. This is a very basic sound bar that sounds extremely good. It has all the options needed for streaming over Wi-Fi or optical from TV. There is also an ethernet port on the back. Your connection options are very limited. There is no Bluetooth, so the initial setup is done over Wi-Fi. I would highly recommend checking for updates immediately, the process is much smoother after the first update. You get access to the Sonos Radio, along with streaming whatever you like over Wi-Fi. When connected to the TV the install instructs you to turn off the internal speakers on the TV, it does not look like there is a way to sync audio to the internal TV speaker timing. Using the digital audio input the sound is fantastic. You will only get the forward sound, but the speaker has no problem filling the room with your chosen audio. There are two woofers and two tweeters based on the specs. This speaker is fantastic for a small apartment or a game/family room. I can see people using this as a speaker only as it sounds so good. Sonos has hit another home run. The size of the speaker is about 22 inches at the front and 20 inches at the back. The top controls are centered. I figure this is good to know if you plan on sliding it into a opening under the TV. It is a little more that 2 3/4 inches tall and 2 1/2 inches tall at the back. Roughly 3 3/4 inches deep.

Small Soundbar...BIG Sound!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As a long time Sonos user I was excited to get the newly released Ray Soundbar with WiFi. It's Sonos' latest soundbar release and is touted as a compact solution that's easy to setup and use. This is certainly the case as it literally takes just a few minutes to setup and use with a TV or as a speaker for music or gaming. Although it's diminutive in size, the sound is fantastic as expected from a Sonos speaker. Packaging - more and more consumer electronics companies are moving to recycled/recyclable packaging and Sonos has jumped on that wagon. The Ray is packaged very well and arrived in perfect condition. Included in the box is the Ray, power cord, optical cord and instructions. Build Quality - the Ray is definitely a compact soundbar weighing in at a little over 4 lbs. and measuring just 22" wide. The speakers are forward facing so based on that and the size this soundbar can be placed in a TV console, hung on a wall (with adapter, not included) or even on a desktop for gaming use. Although it's compact, the build quality is very impressive and as expected from Sonos. There are flush touch controls on the top of the unit and only an ethernet, optical and power connections. There's also an indicator light which can be toggled on/off with the Sonos app. Setup - As advertised by Sonos the Ray is super easy to setup and and use. Simply connect the optical and power cables, download the S2 Sonos app and begin the setup. It took about 2-3 minutes from unboxing to connected and running on my Vizio TV. Once up and running, the Ray is configureable through the S2 app. Sound such as bass and treble can be adjusted with the "EQ" and Trueplay allows the user to customize the sound based on the room the Ray is located in. Status light and lights for the touch controls are also adjustable in the app. Remote control setup is also managed with the app...and this is one area I was a bit let down. As the Ray is only able to connect to a TV with an optical audio cable, it only supports IR (infrared) remote controls. The remote for my Vizio TV is an RF and does not support the Ray. Sound Quality - This is where the Ray really shines. I am blown away by the BIG sound that comes out of such a compact soundbar. For use with TV, Sonos worked with Hollywood sound engineers to develop a speaker that delivers crisp and understandable dialogue. There's also an adjustment toggle in the app, and it works. With the optical audio cable, TV dialogue synced perfectly and no adjust meant was needed. Definitely use the Trueplay option and customize the Ray for your room(s). It creates a truly immersive sound experience! For music, the rich bass and crisp treble is amazing for such a small set up. I find myself using the Ray more and more for listening to Sonos Music instead of watching TV...the sound is that impressive. Pros: - BIG sound in a compact design - Sonos build quality - Sonos S2 app is easy to use and allows for customization - Trueplay - the immersive sound experience is incredible - Easy to setup and operate Cons: - My Vizio RF remote is not supported by the Ray - As a longtime Sonos user, it's a bit frustrating having to use S1 and S2 apps to run my hardware - this is not a knock on the Ray but on Sonos' development decisions. The Sonos Ray is an amazing compact WiFi Soundbar that puts out BIG sound! I would highly recommend it for anyone looking to add or upgrade a soundbar for TV, music or gaming, this thing rocks!

Posted .Hi, and thank you for your review! We're glad you love the Sonos Ray so far! Such a detailed review and we appreciate the feedback.
We wanted to address your S1 concern. We know this can be inconvenient, however it was a choice that needed to be made. Sort of think of it like your phone from 2007 running the software that was made for your new phone. The hardware wouldn't be able to handle the processing power needed to run well. It's the same with our speakers. They all have computers in them. If we didn't transition to the S2 platform, and sunset our older products, we would not have been able to innovate and continue to add the new features we've been adding. It really was a tough decision and we know to some a very inconvenient one, but one that had to be made. We are offering industry leading up to 30% off codes if you decide you want to upgrade. You can find out what products are available for upgrade by logging into your Sonos account. We hope this shed a little bit of light on our reasoning for transition to the S2 platform. Keep listening out loud and enjoying your Sonos!

Great Sound!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sonos Ray sound bar is an excellent sounding product. It is a great option for those who are in smaller spaces or just want great sound at a great price. While you won’t get any pounding bass from this sound bar, you will still get quality sound that will fill a small to medium sized room. Set up is easy, user friendly and I didn’t have any issues with the process. You will have to connect via the included optical cable as there is no HDMI input, unfortunately. There also isn’t a 3.5 mm output jack either which is a big bummer. I was hoping to be able to hook this up to my gaming monitor but no luck. Additionally, there is no Bluetooth connectivity. The point of this product is to deliver awesome sound at an affordable price and it does both well. It is so nice to not have to use the cheap speakers that come with most televisions today. The Sonos Ray really enhances the overall experience of watching movies or gaming and I’m very pleased with it so far! If you’re looking for an excellent, high quality and affordable sound bar you will not be disappointed with the Sonos Ray.

Posted .Hi there,
I understand you were disappointed with the sound quality of the Ray and felt it didn't justify the price. It's important to us that you have a positive Sonos experience. Here's what we can do:
Troubleshooting:
Placement: Speaker placement can drastically affect sound. Is the Ray on a shelf or enclosed space? Experiment with placement for potential improvement.
Room Acoustics: Room size and materials impact sound. Could you describe your room's setup?
Sound Settings: Explore the EQ settings (bass, treble) in the Sonos app for adjustments to your liking.
Alternatives:
If you're seeking a more robust sound experience, we might discuss upgrading to the Beam or Arc for a noticeable difference.

Nice sound. Simple setup.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've tested other sound bars that connected to my TV via HDMI/ARC and had a lot of extra features to almost act like a full on receiver before. This sound bar is definitely not that. It's really simple to hook up no matter what your TV looks like (as long as it has an optical output, which, as far as I know, most do) you're good to go. Setup was fairly easy. The box included an optical cable with a decent length and a power cable. After hooking everything up, the sonos app will help finalize the settings for the sound bar for you. This was the most "Apple like" experience out of any other non-Apple third party equipment I've used. The app found the speaker quickly and automatically helped connect to the wifi network and update the firmware with little to no intervention required. You can customize a handful of settings in the app to adjust the EQ or adjust the voice delay if needed. Whatever simple settings you can think of adjusting can probably be found in the app. Or you can play a variety of music or airplay straight from the app as well. It's a pretty well done app but I don't need to use it much after the initial setup. The app also allows you to program your normal IR remote to control the volume on the Ray. All it needed was for me to press volume-up once on my Apple TV remote and it was all set up. Very nice. Day to day, I just leave the Ray on. This is where you need to figure out if the simple optical connection is what you're looking for. Since there's no HDMI connection for this sound bar, you can't control it via CEC. So, it just makes sense to leave the sound bar on so it's always going to be our sound source and if we need to airplay music to it it's always available. The only downside to not having CEC control is that I can't use the AppleTV remote function on my iPhone to control the volume since that's controlled completely via IR. So don't lose your remote! This isn't a big deal but it's something. Setting my TV to output via optical instead of the built in speakers was very easy but your milage will vary depending on what TV yout have. Mine is an older (~10 years) 55" samsung TV. The sound of the Ray is quite good. I don't need it to anger the neighbors or anything but it does get fairly loud (you can even adjust the maximum allowed volume in the app if you don't want to accidentally turn it up too loud). It beats the TV speakers by a mile (what doesn't, though?). All in all, I'm glad I have this on my bedroom TV. If I had other sonos speakers, I'd probably get even more out of it by pairing them together and giving myself a sort of surround sound system but this one sounds good for it's environment and "just works" well enough for us. If you're looking for a nice speaker that "just works" for any TV you're currently using the TV speakers on, this one might be for you if it's in your budget. Give it a look.

Compact Soundbar packs a punch
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sonos Ray is a great compact soundbar from Sonos. This is a great choice if you have a small A (<40 inches) TV. Although it is small it still has great sound. Mounting options from Sonos are limited to a wall bracket (not included) or putting on or in an entertainment center. You can mount it above or below a wall mounted TV directly from the TV mount with 3rd party soundbar mounts. It is odd that Sonos did not foresee this as this soundbar is particularly suited to mount right under or above a TV due to its compact size. Audio connection is limited to optical only. There is WiFi and Ethernet for network connection. The soundbar packs all of Sonos great execution of soundbars and speakers into a small form factor. The Sonos App is available for IOS and Android, it is well laid out and easy to use. Trueplay assisted set-up optimizes the sound for any space. You have to use an iPhone to do this so if you have android borrow an iPhone to do the Trueplay setup, it is well worth it. The soundbar can be controlled with Google assistant or Alexa via wifi. You can stream Sonos radio to the soundbar from your phone which is included, there is a premium pay service that allows a wider selection of music, skipping tracks and more. You can link you own streaming music apps to Sonus like Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, Audible, Deezer, Pandora, TuneIn, iHeartRadio, Google Play Music, YouTube Music, and others. The setup was a breeze with the Sonos app. The one snafu is volume control. I use a fire stick to stream and a Samsung TV. I could not get the volume control to work with content streaming from the firestick but it works fine with content streaming from the TV itself or live tv. This is more of a Samsung problem as the remote does not seem to put out the IR needed when streaming from the firestick. The volume can be controlled with the Sonos app in this situation. A third party remote may solve this problem. The volume control can also be set up with Alexa or Google assistant. As for sound Sonos audio experience makes this one of the best budget soundbars. The Ray had a well rounded sound after Trueplay tuning. The voice enhancement technology really makes speech easier to hear and understand. As a music speaker it is on par with the best stand alone speakers. The base will not shake the room like systems with a sub-woofer but it will do. You can add a Sonos subwoofer but they are as expensive as the soundbar itself. Hopefully Sonos will come out with a paired Subwoofer for this bar for those who want it. Sonos already sells traditional rear speakers to pair with the Ray to create a surround sound set up. This soundbar is a great match for a smaller TV/ Smart TV with optical audio output. It is also great for a gaming system. An HDMI CEC connection would have been a little easier for more complex setups. In the end this soundbar produces great sound in a compact form factor.
