Sonos design and sound at an amazing value
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am a big fan of the Sonos ecosystem, much for the same reason I love Apple products...their products are easy to setup, look great and work very well. I've had various Sonos speakers throughout the years and have loved each one, so I was excited to give their new Ray soundbar a try. Like all Sonos products, the Ray is well packaged, with clear instructions and minimal fluff. It comes with the power cable and an optical cable..there is no HDMI connection...more on that later. Like all Sonos products, there is no remote, you have to use the app or the control center on your iPhone. Setting up the device was simple. Plug in the power, connect the optical cable and follow the easy to run instructions on the app. Within a minute, my speaker was ready to use. I adjusted the EQ to my liking and began using it. It's important to note that this soundbar is meant to replace your TV's internal speakers, not another, more robust sound bar. It's best in a smaller room, like a bedroom or an office, not in the living room. While you can expand the system with a sub and surrounds, those cost more than the soundbar alone. This is not meant to be the center of a large home theater setup. The does sound great for it's size, much better than more expensive systems I've heard from other brands. I find that it sounds best for live sports, but TV and movies sound great too, just don't expect much oomph, there is not much bass. LIke all new Sonos products, the Ray is equipped with Airplay 2 which is my preferred method of output for playing my Apple Music collection. Music sounds good, comparable to a couple of Sonos One's. My only gripe is the lack of HDMI connection. Sonos seems to be a very forward thinking company and using older tech like an optical connection seems a little backwards. I already had an HDMI cable run through my wall, I wasn't too thrilled that I would need to run another cable. Fortunately for me, Apple TV runs the show for me and I was easily able to connect my TV audio to the Ray via Airplay 2. The sound is perfect and there is no lag at all. If you have an Apple TV, this is the way to go. I am super happy with this Ray and will probably get one for my parents bedroom as they have more and more trouble hearing the TV.

You Need Optical, There's No HDMI
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The most important thing buyers should be aware of is that this does not have HDMI, only optical. The TV or PC to which you will be connecting must have optical. There's no HDMI option. Did I mention that there's no HDMI option? Did I mention that you must have optical? I'm guessing Sonos did this to keep the price down, but at what cost? There will surely be buyers who will not realize this at the time of purchase and will be sorely disappointed when they open the box and realize this. I'm not sure how much said cost savings is to Sonos, but it can't be worth the pain points of reviews knocking a star or two off an otherwise great sounding soundbar. Anyway, moving on, the Ray integrates well into a pre-existing S2 system without any hiccups. It sounds great (as all my Sonos products do) and has most of the features (though, again, things like Atmos are lacking at this lower price point). I think it would be perfect for the target audience, ie, smaller TVs in smaller rooms or gamers connecting to their PCs.

Awesome Sound!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I received this item for free from BestBuy and Sonos in exchange for my honest review of the item. I got this to replace a sound bar that I got about 6-7 years ago that worked fine but was starting to show its age. This Sonos sound bar was a breeze to set up, and I am super happy there’s not yet another remote control for me to have to keep track of, like my last one did. With this Sonos, I set it up with my iPhone and then set up my Apple TV 4K remote to be able to control the volume of the sound bar, and I was able to do it in less than 5 minutes from the start of the app download to the time I could use the remote, it was that quick! The sound quality is great, and I could tell it was an upgraded sound from my last sound bar as soon as I turned it on - the sound is crisp and level, there’s no major fluctuations like I was starting to hear with the old one. I need to play around more with the balance settings, though, because while I love bass, especially for music, when it is just dialogue it can be a bit too much and hard to understand. I haven’t gotten to try it out yet, but I’m also really excited about the Airplay option without going through my Apple TV!

Affordable Sonos soundbar
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Very nice sound bar with very clear dialog for TV. Considerably less expensive than the Sonos beam with also as good sound quality in my opinion. The only downside is it only has optical output, no hdmi.

The quality of the sound bar is unmatched to its competitors. It's just "OK"
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really was hoping to like this soundbar better than I did but too many things hold it back. First is the no HDMI. In the last 6 years of buying soundbars I haven't had a single one that didn't have an HDMI connection. Coming from a higher end vendor you really wouldn't expect them to not add support and go with a lower bandwidth input. Sure it's only stereo and that extra bandwidth would go to waste, but CEC controls wouldn't and the need of another remote. Forget about using an app to control sound, that's way more cumbersome than feeling buttons on a remote. Another is the need for an account to set up the device. I'm really getting tired of every device requiring you reveal who, what, where you are any time you want to do simple tasks. Higher end shouldn't have rely on data mining since they're already charging premium on the device itself. As for sound, it's a bit bassy and boxy at default settings. Lowering the bass and pushing treble up a bit balances out to a more natural sound. The downside is that you lose the bass - a sub would be able to pick up the slack. At this setting it's very pleasing, though. I don't like that there's no fine tuning the sound any further than simple bass/treble sliders. There's also no bluetooth. If you want to play music through these speakers it's wifi only. It's not a bad thing but not having to allow it network or internet access would be a big plus since it's just a speaker that has no need at all to connect to my network and especially not outside of my local network. It's a decent soundbar, but nothing I would ever buy for my main set up. It's good enough for my daughter's room or maybe as a standalone music speaker. Too many limitations make it not really shine like I had hoped it would.

Posted .Thank you for your review. Ray is designed for smaller TV rooms and for secondary TVs in a bedroom or office. Optical really shines in these situations because it's nearly ubiquitous on all TVs in the past 15 years, and it's fairly plug-and-play. Given its use of Optical, Ray can use any IR remote to control the soundbar's volume, which covers cable boxes, streaming device remotes, and most TVs. If a TV remote outputs RF or Bluetooth, some manufactures offer the ability to turn on IR functionality within the TV settings. All Sonos products require a network connection and setting up a Sonos account as the entire Sonos ecosystem is a network connected one. As for the sound quality, we appreciate your feedback. The Sonos Ray does have the option for Trueplay which is an advanced tuning software built in to the iOS app (for iPhone and iPad), this tuning can be done just once and tune the speaker for the exact location it is placed. Thank you again for your review.

Sound quality is poor
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The sound quality is poor and very underwhelming. We have had other soundbars and external sound equipment that has cost much less and provided a much better experience. Most likely going to return this product.

Quality vs value
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Good speaker. Quality of the sound compared to the other Sonos bars, I expected it to be better, but the quality for its value is great. Recomended for a small bedroom for not a demand of performance.

Big sounds, medium price, small package...
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Surprisingly big sound for a small footprint and a fair price. Bass is the only thing a little bit lacking but I can always buy the mini sub if I really need to feel the movie that I fall asleep watching in my bedroom...
