It can be a little difficult for others to play their music on this device. Works very well for my bluetooth devices though.

I have an entire Sonos home theater system in my truck, so naturally when I wanted a portable Bluetooth speaker I went towards the Sonos roam. I was very disappointed in the sound quality. Even using the app and turning up the bass it still sounded “noisy“ no matter what I did I could not get it to sound decent. The bass was lacking, and it became garbled at higher volumes. I don’t like the shape of the speaker and I don’t like that the control buttons are on the side.. I returned it and purchased the Bose sound link flex. I’m much happier with the Bose. But I’m definitely keeping the Sonos home theater system Lol

Amazing Portable Sound Ready For Anywhere

I have been a Sonos customer for a couple of years now. I have owned up until recently, the Gen 1 Beam, the Gen 2 Beam, and two One SLs. I have used the Beams and the Ones in a surround sound configuration for my bedroom because I wanted something with a complete sound but in a smaller space. Initially my thought was to try this and then add a sub if I needed more bass. Well, Sonos surprised me from the beginning by providing a satisfying sub signature to all of it’s speakers I was using, with the Beams and the Ones complementing each other really well, and actually combining to enhance the overall experience. So I’ve never felt I needed the sub. So why am I talking about this in a Sonos Roam SL review you ask. Trust me it’s important. I have for some time wanted a portable speaker to take with me on hikes, have with me while out grilling or just being outside (I love the outdoors), or even while doing things around the house. I’ve had brands of portables in the past such as Harmon Kardon, Sony, and Bose, and all have had good sound and have had their pluses and minuses, but none really met all my criteria, namely, that I wanted something robust against water and dust, good battery life, and versatility with connections, all while being really portable. I know, a ton of expectations there, and no product is perfect. The Sonos Roam SL provides connectivity through both Wifi (through the Sonos app), and Bluetooth. With the Sonos app, it becomes a part of your Sonos network, providing a mobile listening experience within the Wifi network your other Sonos products are on. This is great in the fact that you can move the Roam around the house while you’re working or doing things and augment your fixed Sonos speakers. With Bluetooth, you can walk outside of your Wifi network and have the ability to listen to content through your phone, tablet, or computer, anywhere. That’s crucial for hiking in the mountains, hanging out on the beach, or even having an impromptu dance party on your block. Even better, you don’t have to worry about the elements while enjoying this functionality as it’s water and dust resistant. The housing is hard plastic with rubberized ends for non-skid. It’s about the size of a regular sized water bottle, so it fits really well in a water bottle spot in your pack, or very easily on a small table or cooler. The button layout is super simple and consistent with other Sonos products, with play/pause and volume up/down on one end, and a pairing/power button on the back. The opposite end to the buttons is bare, but to my surprise, is a wireless charging point for a Qi charger. So you can be charging wirelessly while enjoying the speaker. There is also a USB-C port on the back next to the power/pairing button for wired charging. From a battery standpoint, I have not suffered from range anxiety, easily getting enough hours out of this speaker for a weekend of listening away from a power source, with natural starting and stopping intervals. Meaning I didn’t feel the need to ration listening time. The Sonos app provides all the standard configuration tools as it does for other Sonos products, so the Roam is able to be software updated, has equalizer configuration, and can be configured in any desired array with your other Sonos products. I have found that the equalizer at 0 for bass and treble is already really good, but I slightly turn up both to get it tweaked for my liking. There is also a loudness toggle to bump up the overall volume and dynamic. My expectations for the Roam SL for sound quality were somewhat high considering my satisfaction with my other Sonos products, but I tempered that with the fact that this is a much smaller speaker than the others. Realistically, no one can expect master tuning in a mini speaker that is geared more for versatility than quality. However, the Roam SL surprised me immediately. The amount of bass I’m getting from this little speaker is on par with one of my One SLs. That’s significant. As I mentioned earlier, I never really felt the need for a sub with my surround configuration, and this lends really well to the Roam SL as well. It has a really good balance between highs and lows, and the mids are prominent enough to enjoy the lower vocals that so many small speakers lack. The equalizer in the app further gives you the ability to make this personal for. And that I can have this stowed in my pack on a day hike or bike ride, with whatever music or podcast or soundtrack I choose is amazing. I quickly realized after a short time with this little wonder that I found a portable speaker that has met pretty much all the things I wanted. I can be mobile with my life playlist now, and not limited to a headset or ear buds. I highly recommend the Roam SL if you are looking for portable, resilient speaker for life that sounds amazing.

Best Buy gives misleading information. They do not check to make sure the open box products work! I bought this speaker and it was listed as Open Box and fell in the excellent category. On the website it said it had been checked and worked. It did not work. Customer service was horrible about standing behind their product. I even had bought the geek squad warranty. They would not replace this speaker that did not work, it wouldn't connect to the Sonos app and wouldn't hold a charge. They said I could return it. But would not offer me another speaker at a comproble price. I bought this as a present for someone else and missed out on other sales of this speaker going on at other places. I trusted what they implied in that they check their product before reselling it. They do not! Be weary of buying any open box product. They are not truthful when they say they make sure the product works.

I purchased a new Sonos Roam SL. I followed the instructions to connect to the Sonos application, but it got stuck just after it identified the Roam SL and made a failed attempt to connect to it. After several attempts, I looked up the Sonos community blog and found out that this device is no longer supported by the Sonos application. I returned it to Best Buy immediately and purchased a Bose portable speaker instead.

Power and Sound issues. Only powered on when plugged in. Had them plugged in for over 48 hours. Purchased two. Had to return them. Even customer service couldn’t help me get sound and I am pretty tech savvy. I already did all the troubleshooting steps they walked me through multiple times and it didn’t work. Ultimately they were asking me about what charger I am using to charge them, amps and wattage etc. A regular Type C cord and plug that I use for ALL my Type C devices since they did not come with any charger, just a type C cord. Plus I could hardly understand the tech, assistant, or whatever their title is. So didn’t need the frustration.

Arrived with a bricked battery. This was a new unit on clearance sale, so I believe it had been sitting on a shelf for years without any battery maintenance. Returned without issue and did not bother attempting to purchase another or its upgraded sibling the Roam 2.

It was my first Sonos. Rep mentioned that it was top of the line. But sound was weak and when I tried to increase the volume, it sounded busted.
