Customers are saying

Customers admire the Roam Smart Portable Speaker's amazing sound quality, portability, and surprisingly big sound for its small size. Many appreciate its ease of setup and Bluetooth connectivity, along with its water resistance for use in various settings. However, some users point to inconsistent battery life and occasionally low volume as drawbacks. A few also mention challenges with charging and the power button.

Does not work with Legacy Sonus products

Disappointing to find this does NOT integrate with the rest of my Sonus network. Taking both these I purchased and returning. Do NOT buying this product is you have a Sonus network running the S1 app and integrating with Sonus Connect: AMP, ZP80, ZP90, ZP100 or ZP120 devices. So disappointing.

Hi, and thank you for taking the time to review our products. We announced in 2020 when we launched our S2 app (which was a necessity to continue innovating and making our products better) that all future released products will require the S2 app.

Unfortunately the products that you have mentioned came out in the 00's and the hardware in them is dated and cannot run S2 efficiently. That being said we do have industry leading solutions in our trade in program. john.milton

After reading the many positive reviews, I don’t know what they’re listening to. The sound is totally underwhelming at it’s highest volume. Returning after only using for two days. Trying Bose next, which has always been my go to anyway. Don’t buy!

Speaker is a piece of crap. I thought since I had the surround sound at my home it would have the same quality. Not!! Pass my return time so I’m looking into the warranty

    Not quite ready

This little speaker actually has pretty big sound. If you have a ny Sonos speakers currently and love how they sound, you won't be disappointed with this. However, you probably will be disappointed with the battery life. If you want this to be ready to use, make sure you turn it off. Do not rely on the "up to 10 days of battery life" because that's only accurate if you turn it off. While they say it has a sleep mode, if you have a Sonos system or speakers already, or even if you don't, the battery will die within 24 hours without any use. The reason is that anytime you even open the Sonos app, the speaker comes out of sleep mode. I tested this for a week and spoke with Sonos CS reps about it and hopefully this is fixed with a software update at some point, but until then, don't expect to be able to use this on battery power alone the next day because you only used it for an hour and it shows 90% battery life remaining unless you turn off the power. Try it for yourself and see. It really is a great portable speaker and I'm sure Sonos will rectify this at some point, but it's just not quite ready until they do.

Disappointed. I have many sonos products and am very pleased with them all but the sound of the roam is by far their least impressive model. Jbl makes the best sound for a portable Bluetooth speaker.

I am a big Sonos guy. Every time a new sonos product comes out I need to get it. I was excited for the Roam but wow, what a disappointment. The Bluetooth connectivity seem to never work well and the sounds is ok. I ended up returning.

Im not sure how this speaker has positive reviews. The sound is underwhelming and honestly its a horrible value, there are way better speakers out there at this price point. Was really hoping for more.

No where does it state NOT compatible with the S1 App- I have thousands of dollars of good speakers all on the legacy 1 app. I'm NOT going to have 2 separate Sonos networks- They are purposely punishing loyal purchasers.

Ahhh yes. The old "make oodles of money from punishing our old customers" trick!

We stated last year that all of our future products starting with Arc, Sub, and Five, will only be compatible with S2. The reason we had to upgrade our platform is because of software innovations. Imagine you cell phone from 2005 running the software that was made for your most current phone. It wouldn't run very well at all, and we wouldn't expect it to. It the same concept with our older product. Unfortunately, our oldest products were limiting what we were able to do with our software and the only way to innovate with newer products, was to update the platform. We do offer industry leading trade up programs where you can get 30% off of new products by trading in the old. We also still support S1 security patches and bug fixes. john.milton

    Best-sounding compact speaker

    Posted .

The speaker is very small, very portable, and looks and sounds fantastic. When played at normal volumes it doesn't sound much different from the play 1 speakers, although at higher volumes this is not the case. And the bass (and overall sound) is far superior to any other speaker of a similar size I have tried. Really the only downside to the Roam is that it is on the expensive side and doesn't come with the charring base like the Move does.

Sonos attempted to designate one button to both power on and pair the device, which does not function well. It's difficult to distinguish WiFi from Bluetooth from Sleeping from Off from On.

The Sonos Roam is a good portable speaker and integrated well with my existing Sonos home speakers. As a stand alone it provides excellent sound quality but will not blow you away on how loud it can get. For its size, it’s pretty loud. The design is good and makes traveling with easy, thus far it has proven to be durable at the beach, tailgating and backyard shenanigans.
