Customers are saying

Customers admire the Roam Smart Portable Speaker's amazing sound quality, portability, and surprisingly big sound for its small size. Many appreciate its ease of setup and Bluetooth connectivity, along with its water resistance for use in various settings. However, some users point to inconsistent battery life and occasionally low volume as drawbacks. A few also mention challenges with charging and the power button.

Poor product quality… died after 14 months.

My Sonos Roam died 14 months after i purchased it. 2 months after the warranty expired. I was hoping it simply needed a reset so we called customer service. After running through a couple of diagnostics with the Tech Support team, i was told that my Roam was out of warranty, and that they would give me a 30% discount a new one. No repair option. The product needs to go in the grange. Very sad.

    Flaw-Laden hunk of junk

I can’t get past how many good reviews there are for this product. I’ve had an absurd amount of issues with the roam. I love the sound but the technical issues I’ve encountered overcome the sound quality. The roam refuses to hold a charge. It doesn’t come with a high enough voltage wall charger so I purchased my own. Even after sitting on the charger for days it dies after only minutes of use. I have actually found it turns on by itself and perhaps that’s the reason why. It also shows no light while actually charging. It refuses to turn on immediately after charging which is also frustrating. The Bose Color sound I’ve had for years (bought the roam to replace it) has never had any of these issues. After giving jt 2 weeks I finally was so frustrated I wanted to return it. I thought there was perhaps a factory issue that it was a default produce. After sitting in the phone for 30 minutes working through the problems with Sonos they told me I had to bring it back to Best Buy for a refund. Best Buy would not accept it as it had been over the time period I was allowed to return it. Now I’m stuck with a worthless piece of $200 junk for which I have no use. If it had not been so expensive I would take great pleasure in smashing this thing to smithereens. I will be copying this review on any site that sells this piece of junk as I am extremely dissatisfied with both the product and the customer service I received from Sonos. If I had not bought the Arc sound bar as well I would be switching back to Bose for life.

Hi, and thank you ver much for taking the time to write this review. We're very sorry for the inconvenience. To turn Roam off completely hold the power button down for 5 seconds. This shut the speaker off completely and does not allow it to kick back on from sleep mode which is designed for faster time to music. That and ensure you're charging it with a 7.5w charger. Feel free to call us back after the failed attempt to take it back to Best Buy. We'd love to work something out! john.milton

    Awful SW, lacks minimal functionality

The clumsy software implementation is well documented in other reviews an will not be repeated here. Less-well revealed is the functional deficiency in the Roam design. Do not expect to be able to use more than one Roam without having access to a wifi network. That is, one cannot listen to more than one speaker via bluetooth, eg when both speakers are simultaneously connected to an iPhone via Bluetooth, one would think there would be a way that Sonos would allowing pairing of the devices so that they could both be used (other manufacturers portable speakers allow this). Not so for SONOS Roam. Sonos is quick to warn customers that without wifi, only monoaural playback is possible (Stereo pairing doesn’t work). What is less clear is than multi-speaker monoaural playback isn’t possible. So if you buy two speakers and aren’t on wifi, you can count on only one working when on bluetooth alone. Even an inexpensive pair of bluetooth ear-pods will play on both sides (and in stereo for that matter). This Sonos product is severely deficient in functionality for a portable device, enough so that it should be avoided. No comment on other Sonos products other than I won’t go near them after my Roam experience.

I bought 2 of them over a year ago and now one doesn’t work at all and the other doesn’t stayed charged for very long. This Sonos product is trash and the discount is probably to get rid of them. No problems with other Sonos products only this one.

Good sound quality. I’m able to connect to my Sonos S2 system, pandora, and my IPhone playlist. I take it when I travel and as a remote speaker when I’m getting ready for work.

Such good sound from such a little speaker. And, we love that we can sync it with our main speaker to have continuous music in different levels of the house.

Sonos Roam DOES NOT work with older Sonos speakers

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Sonos Roam DOES NOT work with older Sonos speakers (S1). Sonos has created a new software platform (S2) that leaves legacy owners in the dust. You need to use the Sonos S2 app to set-up the Roam. If all your current Sonos speakers are less that a year old, this will not be a problem for you.

Hi, and thank you very much for posting this review. We announced last year that all products we launch going foward will only be available with our S2 platform. We are still releasing security patches and bug fixes to our S1 platform, which is above industry standard. Unfortunately our products from many, many years ago, just don't have the computing power for us to continue to innovate. Sort of like expecting your phone from 15 years ago to run the software your newest phone runs now. We are also offering a 30% trade up program which is also well above industry standard. Fortunately most of our products do support S2! Here's a website with the products and which software version they support. Some are 10 years old at this point. We hope this put the software into context! We're very sorry for the inconvenience. https://support.sonos.com/s/article/4786?language=en_US john.milton

    Set-up's a Nightmare. Software's Buggy. Stay Away!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased the Sonos Roam based on the highly positive reviews attesting to the speaker's superior sound qualities. Well, I never got to hear them. I found it impossible to set up a connection with my PC or iphone, having wasted hours fultilely going through the designated steps and researching online for tips and guidance. What I did find in my research was scores of complaints attesting to the same issue, including on Sonos' own website - which, by the way, is an incomprehensible jumble of confusion. The "instructions" that come with the device are a joke. Connecting to Bluetooth these days is like falling off a log. 1-2-3. Done. But somehow Sonos has managed to invent a product that makes the Mars Perseverence rover seem like a grade school science project by comparison. I wish the tech reviewers delved into the horrific frustration of setting this audio device up. Do your own googling and you'll find many dissatisfied customers bitterly calling the Roam a useless paperweight. Sonos' software furthermore draws criticism for being excessively buggy. I'm returning mine for a full refund after one day of frustration and anger. Caveat emptor.

    Total waste of money

Do not buy this product. It is a total and complete waste of money. It is NOT a bluetooth speaker. You cannot set it up at all unless you are on a private wifi network. Forget ever using it if you are using a guest wifi network or live in an apartment building with shared wifi. There is absolutely NO WAY TO SET THIS UP AS A BLUETOOTH SPEAKER!
