Customers are saying

Customers admire the Roam Smart Portable Speaker's amazing sound quality, portability, and surprisingly big sound for its small size. Many appreciate its ease of setup and Bluetooth connectivity, along with its water resistance for use in various settings. However, some users point to inconsistent battery life and occasionally low volume as drawbacks. A few also mention challenges with charging and the power button.

Small, well put together and a good sound

Not the best sounding but well made and a cheap entry to world of Sonos. Airplay and possibility of expansion was the main reason I bought it. I got an occasional hiccups with connectivity but nothing a restart didn’t fix.

Does not pair well (or at all!) via Bluetooth

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Typical Sonos product - sounds great if you can get it to pair and had high hopes for the Roam due to the Bluetooth pairing option which SHOULD let you bypass the Wi-Fi pairing. However the Bluetooth pairing keeps throwing you back to the app which then requires you to go thru the whole WiFi set up again. Only successfully paired it once via Bluetooth through the app. Tried all the tricks and hacks on YouTube and Sonos help pages - nothing helped - and for the money paid should not have to spend an hour trying to figure out how to pair it via bluetooth. Bought this for a wedding party thinking anyone can hook in through the Bluetooth regardless of the app - did not work at all and ended up listening to music through our phone speakers - total disappointment. Will be returning this item today!

I absolutely LOVE this speaker! I use it all the time at home and when I travel. I also love that you can integrate it with Alexa to control the music.

The worst purchase I've ever made.

This is absolutely the worst electronic device I've ever used. I was born in the 70s, so I've programmed VCRs... Stolen my neighbor's cable... I mean, I work in technology. This thing simply doesn't work. Can't charge it. Can't turn it on. Trying to connect to bluetooth was an effort so futile I decided instead to teach my teenage daughter to drive. THAT was easier than using this god-forsaken excuse for a speaker. What a freaking waste of money. Thinking about uploading a picture of it just sitting on my counter, plugged in but not charging. A video of me pressing the on button and it NOT turning. Makes me miss my Walkman from the 80s... because at least when I pressed play, I heard music.

    Terrible item

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

My wife purchased this for me for valentines day. Loved the design… thats where it ends. Background: my wife and i have sold electronics, in retail, including bluetooth devices, and set them up for customers, for a combined 20 years. We are very techy. So, I opened the device, plugged it into one of my 5 USB C cables around our house to charge. After letting it charge for 3 hours, i noticed it was flashing red (usually not a sign its charging or charged. Most devices stop flashing at some point and then they will stay a solid nuetral color like blue or green). Either way, I felt it was charged enough to test. I then began struggling to get this device into bluetooth mode. I tried turning it on and off, holding down power, holding down variety of buttons simultaneously, trying all the tricks to get a bluetooth device into bluetooth mode. I then resorted to the online manual. I began reading the online user guide/manual, and i couldnt get it out of the setup phase (blinking green). After 25 minutes I gave up and ganded it to my wife to figure it out. My Wife then spent 30 minutes getting it to pair to my iPhone. She told me she did the following: downloaded the proprietary manufacture app and then the device required an update. After the device apparently updated, she too couldnt get it into bluetooth mode. She spent about 10 minutes trying to get it to connect via bluetooth and almost gave up. She handed it to me and told me it will connect via the app but not over bluetooth. As she said this, and handed the speaker to me, the device magically went into bluetooth mode for the very first time. I paired it to my phone finally after an hour and i wasnt thrilled to try it because how long it took. I began thinking that after an hour and that whole set up process my wife and i went through that it may be a device that wont work as intended (bluetooth speaker). So before testing the audio I uninstalled the bloatware app because i just wanted to use this as a bluetooth speaker. I wasnt wrong. After uninstalling the app, the device didnt connect automatically (not shocking). I then had to go to the settings in the iphone and manually pair. After i paired it to my iPhone i got a notification on my phone that said the device recommended downloading the app i just uninstalled. After all that I put it back in the box and didnt even test the sound. I dont want to actually enjoy the sound/device and go through that setup again when I inevitably get a new phone again (yearly). DO NOT PURCHASE!

    Won't work with S1 app

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

We have used Sonos for many years and have many older devices that are only supported by the Sonos S1 app. All newer devices we have bought work with the Sonos S1 app. Imagine my surprise when this unit came up saying it would only work with the S2 app. Buyer beware. If you are using the S1 app this unit won't work! I have thrown out all the packaging so I don't think I can return it. I guess I'll sell it on ebay.

Hi, and thank you for taking the time to review the Roam! We're sorry for any confusion this may have caused. When we announced our S2 platform last year, we announced that all future product releases going forward will only work on our S2 platform. This is for new products being released, not necessarily every product. Here is a page on our support site describing what products work with our software platforms. We hope it helps! https://support.sonos.com/s/article/4786?language=en_US john.milton

    Not for White Noise

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I’m looking for a portable speaker to play white noise in case my sound machine dies (again) and I can’t sleep. The Sonos did get louder than I was expecting, but there was no depth to the sound. I had better depth from the JBL shower speaker. There were also connection issues immediately. With no sound coming out, despite everything being connected and in working order. I had to “forget” the speaker from my Bluetooth and reconnect it. But the speaker did it again when I changed videos. For the price, I expected better sound and software.

    NOT ready for Prime Time

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

As an owner of many Sonos products, this speaker is NOT READY for PRIME TIME. The ROAM speaker is small. sounds SMALL / hollow. I also had significant battery power leakage issues which basically required my Roam to be plugged in when not in use. It gets worst. SONOS support does not have accurate diagnostic tools (as of this posting) to properly assist you. Shame on you Sonos.

Hello, and thank you for taking the time to review Roam. Here are a few tips to help preserve Roam's battery life: make sure you are powering down when not in use (hold power button full 5 seconds), disable any voice assistants when not plugged in, and ensure that you are charging with a 7.5W or higher charger. If you have tried these methods and are still experiencing issues, please reach out to our support team and they can help: support.sonos.com. john.milton

No Battery Life / Selectively Works

Way way too much money for something with a horrible battery life and horrible connectivity compared to many cheaper wireless speakers. For the price, they don’t even include the wall charger…just a usb c cable to usb. Love the rest of the sonos line up…this product just doesn’t feel close at all to the rest of the sonos family.

    Horrible with Spotify

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Does not work well with Spotify. Constantly cuts out and you have to open the app and spam click to get the the song to play again. The Sonos app itself doesn't have a fraction of the features I'm used to with Spotify which gets extremely frustrating. Glad I only bought a smaller speaker to test it out. Will not be buying anymore Sonos products.

Really buggy, terrible to set up and once working needed restarting several times. Sound quality is good, but no better than cheaper JBL speakers. I eventually gave up and returned it after it stopped working, showing an error light. Disappointed as Sonos has such a good reputation.

    Turned off Sonos forever

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Being that the roam is my first Sonos device I can honestly say based on the lack of quality in this device I will stay with Bose for my audio devices. This will randomly turn on and be dead when you need to use it. The connection is spotty at best and the battery never lasts more then 4 hours.

We're our very sorry for the inconvenience. The issues would have been with the power brick you would have plugged it into. A minimum 7.5w charger is needed to charge Roam. We're very sorry for the inconvenience. john.milton

    Bought and Returned

I bought the roam with high hopes for it. I thought of it to be just a smaller move but that’s not what it is. Even with the bass all the way up it is very distant. I would not buy it the only reason I pulled the plug was because I’m heavily into the Sonos ecosystem.

This product is so difficult to connect to an old Sonos system that I plan to return it. You cannot connect it to bluetooth until you register it on the S2 Sonos app. If you have older Sonos components, they are not compatible with S2. Way too difficult and confusing!
