I love the sound, really, it’s great! I have 8 echo devices, I understand Bluetooth as WiFi… so please don’t think I am just an idiot struggling with technology. Today while golfing it took 4 holes to even get the speaker to connect. The app is horrible and the speaker lights are confusing, although the define the light configuration online. If you plan to use this speaker around the house on one network, you will probably be fine. But I take it golfing, to hotels, to the pool and it NEVER connects in less than 10 minutes. Today I restarted my phone because I just couldn’t understand, it said it was playing, said it was connected but no sound (yes, volume was up!). The other thing that sucks is that it will not charge with the USB port in my truck or a golf cart. So I bought a portable power bank that will charge it but no other cords or chargers work. Just the one cord that came with the speaker. I have tried usb-c and A and wireless pads but literally nothing works. I hate this speaker and I hate to say it!

Hi there. Here are a few tips to help preserve Roam's battery life: make sure you are powering down when not in use (hold power button full 5 seconds), disable any voice assistants when not plugged in, and ensure that you are charging with a 7.5W or higher charger. If you have tried these methods and are still experiencing issues, please reach out to our support team and we can help: support.sonos.com. john.milton

solid speaker with great sound, the negatives are the high price and the overall small size that didn't feel premium for the tall ticket.

Great sound, was a little difficult to set up blue tooth. Very comparable if not better than Bose sound system. I like the Sonia app and how you can play multiple speakers Atvthe same time and adjust volume independently.

Everything I love about Sonos in a portable light form. I got this the day it was released and haven’t been disappointed. Great battery, and good mid range power. Only fault is it could be louder but the waterproof feature to allow use in a bathroom is fab!

Sonos Roam product has some issues

I have a full house of Sonos products, and they work pretty well. This product, although sounding good, is a real pain to work with. It has malfunctioned several times although I just bought it a couple of months ago. There are several youtube videos detailing the issues with the product. It's confusing to use, but I plan on keeping it as a part of my system, and the ability to move it around and operate it off my iphone.

The tap to pair feature is super quick and easy. Its pricey, but if you want to use the sonos ecosystem, its definitely worth it. I also think for the soze, it has excellent sound stages.

A great super portable speaker with decent sound for the price / size. It does integrate into the whole home solution. My only challenge is that it requires me to install the v2 version of the Sonos app and the rest of my system only uses v1. This one doesn't have the option to work with the several other Sonos devices I have unless I pay a bunch of money to upgrade them all which is SUPER dissapointing.

This is a review of the Sonos Roam, the new small portable speaker from Sonos which can play music over WiFi or Bluetooth. This is not the first portable speaker Sonos has offered, the Sonos Move was introduced in 2019 but that is really a different animal – a much larger speaker designed for larger group settings outdoors. The Roam is a smaller personal speaker, sized for sitting by the pool or campsite for a small number of listeners. The Move did not really appeal to me due to its size, but the Roam is much more attractive. SETUP: If you already have a Sonos system, the setup is a breeze - you just add a new speaker through the S2 app on your phone. If this is your first Sonos, the directions may seem a little sparse but as long as you get the app installed, Sonos will walk you through the connection on your phone or tablet. I noted that the Bluetooth connection seem to be set up automatically when I added the speaker to my setup on WiFi, so I didn’t need to enter any special ‘pairing’ code later. DESIGN: The Roam is very small and portable, about the same size as other portable Bluetooth speakers I have (Anker SoundCore). It feels solid and well-built. The shape is angled like an Oontz Angle speaker, so that you can either stand it on its end or place it on its side for a more stable configuration with the speakers still aimed upwards. This is a directional speaker, the sound comes out primarily in one direction. Controls are located on one end of the speaker, similar to on the Sonos One and One SL speakers. They are covered with a rubberized layer so they are not touch-sensitive like other Sonos speakers, they actually require a press to activate but they work fine. There are discreet lights in the speaker to indicate status. They are not super bright but are pretty legible, they will not be distracting even in a dim room. On the back of the speaker is a USB-C port for charging, and the power button. I found the power button to be a little too small, I would have like a bit larger and more tactile button that was easier to press. The tradeoff I guess, is the small button is less likely to be accidentally pressed. At one point I thought I had pressed the button to turn the Roam off, but didn’t – so the next day when I used it, the battery was almost exhausted. There are audio cues and the status lights to tell you if the Roam is on or off, I just wasn’t paying attention. Note that the Roam comes with a nice-quality USB-C to USB-A cable for charging, but no actual wall plug. You will have to provide your own power adapter with a USB-A output to charge. For most people who already have dozens of adapters collecting in drawers, it’s not an issue and didn’t bother me. You should be able to charge the Roam using any standard USB-A outlet including power banks. Charging the Roam seemed to go pretty quickly. FEATURES: Pretty loaded! If you already have a Sonos system, the Roam works as a component of your existing network and you can pay your music from the app like any other speaker. AirPlay2 is also an option while on WiFi, and Bluetooth is available when not on WiFi. Like the Sonos Move, the Roam has automatic Trueplay which should automatically adjust the sound to fit your environment by sampling the sound through the built-in microphone. The Roam has Amazon Alexa/Google Assistant capability. However, I’m not a fan of digital assistants so I can’t comment on how well it works. Sonos says the Roam is IP67 waterproof, meaning it should survive in 3 feet of water for 30 minutes. I don’t intend to ever test this, but it’s good to know the Roam should be safe to use at poolside where it might get splashed or on a camping trip where it might get rained on. In addition to the USB-C charging port, the Roam has Qi wireless charging! This is an awesome feature, and works with any certified Qi charger. Sonos will be offering a matching charging dock that uses magnets to keep the Roam locked in place. This is a great idea and is on my wish list, but the dock is not currently on sale yet so I’ve just been leaving the USB-C cable plugged in when not moving around. SOUND: This is the important thing! It sounds pretty good. Ultimately, the speakers in the Roam are small and can only do so much, but Sonos works their usual magic with their automatic Trueplay tuning letting the Roam produce a fuller, richer sound than you would expect. It’s not as full as the sound from my Sonos One speakers or the Denon Home 150 I also own, but pretty impressive from such a small package. I compared this with my Anker SoundCore speaker, because they are both about the same size, and while there is not a night-and-day difference the Roam has noticeably better sound – more well-rounded and clearer. Neither one is going to give you booming base due to the speaker size, but the Sonos is more pleasing and I could crank the volume louder without distortion. Overall the sound is very nice for a speaker this size – Probably not as good as the Sonos Move, but this is a much smaller speaker. Note that while the Roam can integrate with an existing Sonos network, it cannot link to a Sonos sub (by itself, anyway) and it can’t function as surround speakers. Since the Roam is primarily a portable speaker, I’m not sure these are big issues. I’ve tested the Roam using my home WiFi network, AirPlay2 and Bluetooth connections and it performed great on all of them. WiFi and AirPlay2 should give better sound due to increased bandwidth over Bluetooth, but I personally couldn’t tell too much difference in sound quality. One annoyance I had was when I needed to pause music in order to take a phone call – after a period of time the Roam will go into power-saving mode and you have to tap the power button to wake it up. This happens with some other Bluetooth speakers as well to conserve power so it’s not unique to the Roam. On the other hand, when I took a phone call it automatically switched to the phone mic and speaker – with the other Bluetooth speakers I own, they answer the call over the Bluetooth speaker instead of the phone which is annoying. I appreciated that the call automatically goes to the phone speaker and mic. Not sure if this is uniquely a Roam feature, but it was a nice surprise. VALUE: This is a tough one, the Roam is considerably more expensive than your average Bluetooth speaker. On the other hand this is a premium speaker, with premium sound and premium build quality – and there are other premium speakers by Bose, Marshall, Ultimate Ears, etc. that are at a similar cost point. If you are already a Sonos user and want a premium portable speaker, the Roam is a no-brainer. If you are not a Sonos user, a Sonos One SL might make a better entry point – similar cost, better sound – but the Roam is portable as well, so that may sway you and get you into the Sonos family at a relatively reasonable cost. If you are an audiophile I think the cost is worth it.

The features and sound of this speaker are excellent but I had to return it as the battery life makes it unusable outside. It loses 30% overnight in standby mode and barely lasts 5 hours on a full charge. It even loses charge while playing when plugged in. Once they address the battery issue, this would become the best speaker on the market.

Hi, and thank you for your review. To charge the Sonos Roam, make sure you're using a charger with a minimum of 7.5watts. You might not be, which would explain it dying while playing. Also when you're not using it, and want to avoid standby mode, you can turn if off completely by holding the power button down for 5 seconds. This will shut if off completely. john.milton
