Customers are saying

Customers often highlight the excellent sound quality, ease of use, and Dolby Atmos capabilities of the 1155W 7.2-Ch. A/V Home Theater Receiver. Many also appreciate the receiver's power and straightforward setup process. While some users noted the unit can get warm during operation and that the menu system could be improved, the positive feedback on sound and ease of use outweighs these concerns for most buyers. The price point is also frequently cited as a positive aspect.

Upgraded from a Sony STRDH550. Setup was easy, I still need to calibrate the speakers but since they sound really good at this point, I just haven’t gotten around to it.

This is THE BEST home theater receiver I have ever owned. I’ve owned many Sony receivers in the past, but this one ranked at the top! I love the features it has although the OS can be a little slow at times. I do wish there was more hdmi ports but I’ll have to work around that. Yes this has great power. I can bridge speakers too although I can bring up the protect function once I reach 34 on the volume. Put geek squad warranty as well for peace of mind.

Really like the receiver, replaced my 10+ year-old Denon to take advantage of Dolby Atmos, HDR, etc. Still working to learn all the new features, but the sound is excellent, and setup through Best Buy was a breeze. One thing I'll call out, if you're upgrading from an older setup, is CHECK YOUR CABLES. If your current setup is older (like mine was), you may have HDMI cables than can't handle HDR/Dolby signals, so you won't be getting everything you can out of your new setup. Don't let a $20 cable ruin a $1000 home theater!

Don’t forget our Phantom rear surround channels can transform your five-channel system into a seven- channel system too!

After playing with this device I decided to share my thought regarding this unit. The best thing about it is sound. After switching it from a very old 1080p Yamaha receiver I noticed that my very good Monitor Audio speakers started to sound even better, clearer stronger, more expressive. As I kept playing with it, I noticed that when in standby there is a very tiny but annoying buzz sound. I did all the steps sony recommends to fix it, it didnt help. This is unacceptable for someone using this device in a bedroom. I also found out my unit cant update firmware. There is an option but when pressed nothing happens. resetting the unit didnt help like anything else I tried. This is my primary reason for returning it. Also, when connected from my pc using hdmi out, I cant position this device where it is on my table logically. It is shown to be connected on the right while this screen is on my left side of the table. The last issue I found that when paired with Samsung phone, even though it shows audio is enabled there is no sound playing. I tried everything but it looks like either my unit is defective or the only way to play music to use sony's app on android phone. I dont think I find it to be a better way than the way it is designed on Denon Receivers where after you pair with the phone, you are ready to play music. This device is going back to the store. I wanna give this device a second chance even less after reading about multiple issues this device has when used for a TV. I highly recommend testing if you receiver can update fine as soon as you get it.

I don't use this for the radio. I use this to drive my audio in my home theater. Sounds great. I have 4 polk T15 speakers (2 each side) a polk center speaker hidden above my 100" screen. 2 polk T15 speakers for my Dolby Atmos and a polk subwoofer. Movies sound incredible. I have a ROKU connected for streaming and a Sony 4K blu ray player. I don't even go to the movies any more. I just go to my home theater and get the same experience.

The receiver has a nice clean look and nicely matches Sony's 4k Blue Ray player. The sound to me was lacking, however I have to say I only tested it with an analog input from my PC. I felt like at max power that the sound delivery was stressful on the power supply. In addition, with direct input the sound improved, however, with the analog connection it would cut off the audio to the connected sub. I think with the right setup it would be a nice starter or mid range unit.

After 25 yrs it was finally time to replace my JVC receiver with something that could handle today's inputs. Because I absolutely loved my old receiver, I spent a lot of time shopping around for a new one that matched my power expectations while providing me with modern (to me) amenities such as Chromecast, bluetooth, HDMI inputs, ARC, and Atmos. After returning a couple of under performing receivers, I took a chance with the STR-DN1080 and was pleased with its overall audio performance. The receiver does all the stuff Sony says it will do, and I'll leave it to other reviews to point out technical shortcomings and instead focus on where I initially struggled. 1. I struggled with the auto-calibration tool and in the end, did a manual setup of my speakers (Front L/R, Center, and Atmos L/R). I found the on-screen user interface for configuring audio, video, network, etc. very feature-rich and detailed but at the same time it took some trial and error to navigate to the settings I needed/wanted. 2. Continuing with the "feature-rich" on-screen device configuration controls, I am a bit frustrated that this unit does not come with "bass and treble" knobs. I know that is a very "old school" way of tweaking an EQ but I do prefer an EQ that can be quickly set via device buttons/knobs over drilling 5 screens deep in a menu setting. 3. Some have complained about "lag" with this system. I agree that from the time I turn on my TV and get "tv audio" to the time that the receiver recognizes what is going on and switches to "receiver audio" is a bit annoying (2-3 seconds maybe). Other than that, I don't have any "slowness" complaints. On rare occasion everything gets out of whack with my Xfinity DVR, the TV and the receiver but a power off/on usually puts things back in sync. 4. Lastly, I did have issues understanding the setup to make sure that my "default on" did what I wanted it to do. Essentially, when I hit the on button I want my TV on HDMI 1 (connected to my DVR) with AFD 2-channel audio. I am still not sure what I did, or how I did it to finally get that setting to stick, but I was initially frustrated at setup that the system didn't simply "return to previously used settings" when powered on. I apparently had to specify a "default configuration" for getting it to do what I wanted without having the manually select the proper inputs each time I powered my system on. EVEN WITH THOSE 4 "NEGATIVES" I am very happy with this purchase. We are a cable TV (soon to be cord cutting), Google, casting and bluetoothing family. I value the *quality* of audio over the bells and whistles. I was cautious to match power to my existing speakers and have a very nice balance with this system that works great for me. Features I love include the built-in Chromecast, the mobile app, speaker flexibility, 2-channel simulated surround, and Atmos. I like that it will pair with Google Home however I have failed at my initial attempt to get "Hey Google, play Pearl Jam on the stereo" to work as Google Home does not recognize my STR-DN1080 as "the stereo." I'm a little nervous about a receiver that has a ton of integrated software but as long as the software doesn't fail this is going to be a great receiver for the next 25 yrs...or until I require one with a USB-C connector or some other input obsoleting plug!
