Customers are saying

Customers often highlight the excellent sound quality, ease of use, and Dolby Atmos capabilities of the 1155W 7.2-Ch. A/V Home Theater Receiver. Many also appreciate the receiver's power and straightforward setup process. While some users noted the unit can get warm during operation and that the menu system could be improved, the positive feedback on sound and ease of use outweighs these concerns for most buyers. The price point is also frequently cited as a positive aspect.

I purchased this receiver because my old Sony receiver was starting to fade. The initial setup was straightforward and easy to perform. The auto-calibration feature was helpful in telling me I had my two back speakers reverse labeled. I will say the quality of sound this receiver produces is much higher than my old receiver. I haven't heard my speakers sound so good. The bluetooth connectivity is convenient for broadcasting music from my phone or tablet without needing to connect a 3.5mm to RCA cable. Overall I am very please with this receiver.

Good for digital inputs, bad for analog inputs

The Sony STR DN 1080 appears to be fully functional for both digital and analog inputs, but it is not. While it does work for HDMI inputs, it has very limited support for analog video inputs. If the video input is from a 4:3 aspect ratio laserdisc player (for one example), the HDMI ARC output will not include that video. Sony support says only analog video output will work. This means that all hdmi inputs will be switched to the output, but analog inputs go to another output...so switching with this unit also requires switching on the television. This defeats part of the utility of the STR DN 1080. To handle this required an analog to HDMI converter between the laserdisc player and the STR DN 1080. A great deal of attention is paid to the unit's seven channels of output in the manual (two of which are not that important: for us a 5.2 unit would have sufficed), but little paid to its limited set of inputs. Even though there are plenty of analog inputs they can not all be used, which is misleading. One good thing about this unit: it does not squelch output as some similar amplifier switchers do. Our previous unit would detect silence and bring volume to zero and when it detected sound would restore the volume. This had the effect for many video productions of dropping sound at edits and thus dropping the first couple of words from presenters. This unit does not do this.

The Sony STR-DN1080 is an excellent A/V receiver for anyone just getting into home theater systems. I paired the receiver with a Klipsch Dolby Atmos System (5.1.2), and it powers them very efficiently. I also have a XBOX One, the Philips Hue Sync Box , and a Google Chromecast connected to the receiver. So far everything works great and had no issues setting it up. The onscreen menu is very easy to understand when setting up and configuring the speakers.

I bought this as part of my upgrade to an all 4k home theater. I replace an old yamaha 5.1 receiver (which still works), because I needed a receiver with 4k pass through and ARC capability. I have my PS4 Pro, Apple TV 4K, and Sony UPB-X800 all sending 4k HDR signal to my TV through this receiver. I have also upgraded my 5.1 setup to a 7.2 setup and may even consider trying a 5.1.2 Atmos setup, which is possible with this receiver. Overall the sound is excellent, loud, crisp and clear. I am very happy with this purchase.

I needed a high quality A/V receiver near the $500 price point. There are quite a few to choose from. This unit from SONY packs a lot of features not available in others (7.2 Surround, 2 Zones, 4K/UHD, 3D, HDR, WIFI). More importantly for me, since I have several game consoles and other A/V components, the unit accommodates 6 HDMI in and 2 out, (4 / 1 seems to be the standard) ACR, and 3 assignable RCA plug A/V interfaces and an optical audio inputs for those non-HDMI A/V components. Everything was easy to connect and the user interface is straightforward.

The STR line of Sony audio receivers have always earned their part in any entertainment center with a stylish look plus functionality. This is the follow up to the previous version’s 4k model with the welcome addition that this model is able to accept both Dolby vision and has Dolby Atmos. Two things which are at the leading edge of audio and visual home entertainment. Roughly the same size as the STR DN1070, this one leaves a small footprint but has big production. All in receiver options can be controlled on screen.

I just updated my ten year old tv to a new Sony 950H tv with 4K, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos . My eight year old 5.1 Denon AV was not compatible with these new features, so I had to upgrade. I am blown away by the difference this unit makes in sound quality and depth. This is one of the best bang for the buck receivers on the market, and is highly rated by CNET. Great features and a great value, especially when you buy open box.

    Great Sound, Bad FM Antenna.

I've had this receiver for about 2 weeks. I went from a 5.1 system to a 7.1 and needed to upgrade. Also, my last receiver was supposed to be 4K ready, but since then, they came out with HDMI 2.2 so even though it was 4K ready, the HDMI inputs and outputs wouldn't work with 4K. The only thing that is bothering me is the little square FM antenna input. I was able to connect my HD antenna into my last receiver with a coax cable and pick more stations. It comes with a tiny wire that you're supposed to keep as horizontal as possible. But even then, the signal is bad. I've tried looking for adapters to change this to a coax connector and it looks like people with the same problem have come up with homemade adapters. It's kind of silly because I don't hardly use a home theater to play radio stations, but it just bugs me. It's a shame that that may be what makes me exchange this for another brand. Another issue is my Samsung TV not having this receiver in its list of known receivers for the universal remote to automatically turn the receiver on when I turn the TV on. It actually goes from ....70 to ...90 and skips STRDN1080 in its list of receivers. I'm hoping their will be an update soon from Samsung. Everything else is excellent. 5 Stars.

Got this for girlfriend's home theater, and it's working better than expected. The smart TV's power up sequence drives the receiver to turn on and select the appropriate source to enjoy the HDTV sound through her rather substantial speakers. I tied in a PS4 and even my phone to enjoy some streaming services on the fly. It works! The remote is substantially simpler with this version as well.
