The guy that sold me it said that I needed this and it would work my current surround system that is also a Sony.

We are sorry to hear what happen. We recommend connecting speakers with a nominal impedance of 6 ohms to 16 ohms. We also recommend using speaker wires that are anywhere between 12 to 16 gauge. These are most commonly used for connecting speakers to an amplifier or an Audio/Video (A/V) receiver

Unfortunately I cannot stay the same about the service I received from the geek squad. The installer was very inept and unknowledgable about the product. The receiver is hooked up and all the speakers are workin, but the install never paired the receiver to my modem. The receiver was set up so that 6 of the speakers are always on Unless I turn them off in the individual rooms. The installer told me the speakers would not work, but they do. I have tried to contact the geek squad for some direction, but they appear to be unresponsive. Unfortunately this was not a good experience.
