Customers are saying

Customers often highlight the excellent sound quality, ease of use, and Dolby Atmos capabilities of the 1155W 7.2-Ch. A/V Home Theater Receiver. Many also appreciate the receiver's power and straightforward setup process. While some users noted the unit can get warm during operation and that the menu system could be improved, the positive feedback on sound and ease of use outweighs these concerns for most buyers. The price point is also frequently cited as a positive aspect.

Good Receiver With lots of features

Sound quality is good, much better than the Logitech Z906 I had prior. Sony doesn’t mention which DAC they use but it is sufficient. It plays a variety of formats and also takes input from my Apple TV. The remote is excellent, well thought out. I don’t have any issues with it. My main concern is the built-in Spotify - when my Spotify plan changes I have to do a factory reset to get it to work again. It doesn’t change often so it’s not a big issue. Overall great receiver.

I purchased this receiver in Nov of 2017 and after almost a year and a half I can proudly recommend it! Sound quality is excellent and so is the 4K HDR. My set up is Sony 900e TV, Sony UBP-X800 4K blu ray player and Onkyo SKS-HT540 7.1 surround speakers. My only negative is with the usb not being able to remember sound field settings.

Pros: Supports HDMI eARC Virtual back surround speakers Speaker relocation setting Good surround sound reproduction Cons: Only 2 channel stereo output to headphones (no Dolby Headphones or similar virtual headphones surround technology) Sluggish video interface Cheap plastic remote Overall, it is a solid mid-range receiver and a good value for the price.

Great receiver with one fatal flaw

I've always bought sony products in the past. I bought this receiver with high hopes in my newly renovated basement. I love the setup, the one screen displays and visual aspect of the type of sound track being played is great.. here's the issue: if your buying this receiver with the expectation to play netflix, prime, Plex, etc in dolby atmos it will do so... But every time you pause, ff, go back a movie that's encoded with atmos you'll get a loud snap/pop out your right side speakers. Google "str-dn1080 snap pop" and you'll see all the issues. It's been a year with no firmware fix to date. I need up returning mine for another brand.

    Don’t be fooled

Two things: First, the receiver only supports chromecast and Spotify. YouTube, Netflix and all those other apps aren’t available. Second, the 1080 is pretty much the same as the 1070 but the 1070 is more powerful and has more features. The only advantage the 1080 has over the 1070 is that it’s a bit smaller and it supports Dobly atmos and DtsX.

    Watch/Listen function is deceiving

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I wanted to watch business news while listening to music, but you can't do that on STR-DN1080. Basically watch & listen are the same function. I press watch for catv and then listen for usb but TV just goes to usb. I bought a hdmi splitter on Amazon and use that to watch catv while listening to music. I like the 6 HDMI inputs, but disappointed with watch/listen - I feel it is deceiving...

Good Receiver but Serious Audio Issues

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I decided to consolidate my system into all Sony products. My HDR Sony TV and Sony Blu-Ray are connected to this Sony receiver. The receiver will NOT stay locked in an audio output format. Select "Dolby Surround" or 'DTS X", and if a commercial comes along in some kind of different audio format, the unit automatically switches back to some default mode. It needs then to be manually reset. Sony has been told but no fix has been forthcoming. It's annoying and disqualifies this as a quality audio product.

Upgraded my Yamaha reciver it made a huge differance. My 4 pioneer SPF-552, polk center channel, polk sub and Pioneer atmos speakers sound amazing more bass and clarity. FYI you have to plug in your 4K player to the receiver to get the best sound from your movies the ARC will not pass atmos.

I bought the DN1080 to replace my DN1070 in our living room. I paired it with a Sony 75X950G. It works great, The ARC and EARC work great, that is why I went with a Sony receiver and TV, they just work together.

    Yet another defective Sony product.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Do not even bother. It won't do a single thing it's designed to, and Sony will refuse to cover it under warranty. The only joy it ever brought me is when i beat it with a baseball bat. This piece of crap is not even worth giving away. Never buying anything Sony again probably the 5th product from them that I've had nothing but issues with. First it would cut out in the middle of watching anything for five to ten seconds and black out the video, even while connected to other Sony products and new Sony HDMi cables. Then the built in display stopped working. Then it started overheating and shutting off with volume barely over half. Had to put two computer fans under and above to cool it. Now the front panel buttons decide they don't want to respond. There is one upside: my house is now completely free of useless Sony products. What a headache. Absolutely pathetic Sony of all companies refused to cover it despite the fact that when I got in touch with them it was just months old.

Sony quality is now a thing of the past!

Beware of Sony Receivers being Bricked when trying to update firmware!! I purchased a STRDN860 a few years ago and recently when I tried to update it’s firmware which was done according to Sony’s own instructions, my receiver was bricked. In other words it is now a peice of junk not worth fixing. In trying to update the firmware the “clearing” mode came on and never reached the “cleared” status. Sony’s own service centre spent a week looking at the receiver and finally told me that it needed a new main board and as a result was not worth fixing. Since my receiver was now 6 months past the warranty period, I was stuck with the loss of this receiver. The bricking of my receiver has nothing to do with a normal malfunction of the receiver and it is absolutely as a result of poor engineering and manufacturing by Sony and it should be Sony’s responsibility to either fix the defective product or replace it. Warranty has absolutely nothing to do with this issue. I am not the only customer that has encountered this problem with a defective Sony receiver, have a look at the information provided by another customer that experienced the destruction of his STRDN1080 when he also tried to update his receiver’s firmware: https://us.community.sony.com/s/question/0D50B00004IL0wRSAT/solved-str-dn1070-stuck-on-clearing-after-attempting-a-factory-reset?language=es

    Seriously Annoying Flaws

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This receiver turns itself and the TV back on roughly 10-20 seconds after you turn it off every single time, requiring you to repeat the process. Also, after changing inputs on the remote, the receiver switches you to the home screen, so you have to select your input again. After a few weeks, these bugs will combine to drive you insane. Did some investigating, and it looks like it is due to the HDMI control (CEC) not playing well with my Samsung TV. Sony Support suggestions: 1) Turn off Control for HDMI (CEC). -Ok this fixes the issue above, but now using the receiver with Netflix is a huge hassle, and I have to use separate remotes for the volume and powering on/off the devices. You're just switching problems 2) Get a Bravia TV 3) Talk to Samsung about it Wow, thanks Sony support, so very helpful. The sound is fine, but I could have gotten a cheaper one, with more channels, that doesn't make me want to throw it through the window. I'm also annoyed that the Best Buy people didn't ask what kind of TV I had and mention this when I was talking to them in store, or at my in home consultation.

3 New Units Failed - Buyer Beware!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

My first unit stopped sending Cable TV signal to the Bravia TV via ARC HDMI. These are known defects by Sony. I returned the unit purchased (only 17 months old) for an exhange. My Geek Squad protection covered installation and the new Sony AV Receiver failed to provide a Cable TV signal. The unit display stated MUTING and would not allow TV connection. I returned this new one and Geek Squad installed and the same MUTING message displayed. Sony Tech Bulletins state that this MUTING issue is a known issue and to return the unit for repair. Sad to see that Sony puts out such bad equipment. I returned this 2nd defective unit and bought a new DENON AVR - Geek Squad installed and we are enjoying home theater and TV once again. On the second unit, I called Sony Tech support and their escalated service kept me on the phone for over 5 hours with no resolution to the MUTING issue. Sad to see this cheap consumer grade product being represented as a quality product. Save your time and spend money with Magnolia to get a quality AVR.

Unit was bad new out of the box, it keeps overloading when selecting Surround sound setting. Can hardly turn up volumn at all when unit displays "Protection" then just shuts down. Needless to say I'm returning unit right away back to Best Buy. Not sure I really trust this model, can't believe it got high reviews.

I heard so much great things about this receiver however I have had nothing but problems with this unit. I guess the big take away is don’t believe everything you read on the internet. This receiver will be returned tomorrow!!! So many issues I can’t even begin to explain. I have hade multiple receivers in my past and I have never had these many issues. If I had this unit as my first reciever I would have probably given up on the whole home theater experience.
