    ARC issues

The main reason I bought this sound bar instead of Samsung was that I went with a Sony XBR XBR-65X850D TV. Because if you use the HDMI cable to connect the TV to the soundbar then you can control the soundbar with the TV remote. The main thing you have to pay attention is the ARC HDMI which means audio return channel. Traditionally (6 years ago) we connect a HDMI cable to the bluray player (set top box, roku, chromecast etc) to a receiver. The device sends all the audio signals and the video signals together to the receiver. We connect the HDMI out connection from the receiver to the TV. The receiver takes the audio signals and sends only the video signals to TV. There is no way to separate the audio signals alone using a HDMI cable. So if you just have a TV and sound bar and you want only the digital audio to the soundbar earlier on we need to connect it with a optical cable. But if you connect your TV with an optical cable then unless it’s the same company you need to use different remotes or use a universal remote to control the TV and the sound bar. In the new specifications HDMI can carry only audio (ARC) and at the same time provide control of the connected devices (CEC feature, google HDMI CEC to understand about this feature). This is termed as HDMI ARC. You need a TV and a soundbar and most importantly a cable with the capabilities of HDMI ARC to make use of this feature. So when you buy this soundbar with an intention of connecting it with HDMI, make sure you have all the above and especially the appropriate HDMI cable because the older cables are not capable of this feature. Sony does not provide this cable but should have to have avoided all this confusion that you see online on using this product. If you are connecting the soundbar with optical cable: 1) Connect the soundbar and the TV with the supplied to optical cable using optical ports 2) On the TV go to System>Sounds>Speakers and select audio system 3) On the soundbar hit Menu and go to Aud>TV AU> and then choose OPT (up and down arrow on the remote) and hit enter 4) On the Soundbar hit Menu and go to HDMI>CTRL and choose OFF and hit enter 5) That’s it you are all set If you are connecting the soundbar with HDMI Cable: 1) Make sure you have a HDMI ARC cable 2) Connect the cable to the HDMI port on the TV that can transmit ARC. Remember not all HDMI ports on the TV are capable of doing this. I have Sony XBR-65X850D and on that it is the HDMI 4. If you connect the cable to any other port nothing will work. 3) Connect the HDMI cable to the soundbar 4) On the soundbar hit Menu and go to Aud>TV AU> and then choose AUTO (up and down arrow on the remote) and hit enter 5) On the Soundbar hit Menu and go to HDMI>CTRL and choose ON and hit enter 6) On the TV go to settings>External Inputs>Bravia Sync settings>BRAVIA Sync Device list and see if your soundbar is listed and then click the Enable button and this will create a Done display on the soundbar. 7) That’s it you are all set 8) If you do not have a Sony TV then make sure that you are connecting to a HDMI port that can work with ARC and also turn on the CEC feature. By default most TV s have this turned on but if not refer to the TV manual to know how do it. The sound quality is great with this device. In fact it produces crisper and nice treble with this soundbar compared to similarly priced audio systems. But the reason I gave 3 stars is that the ARC feature is not clearly mentioned. Also sometimes when you power off both devices and power on the TV fails to communicate with the soundbar so you have to repeat the point number 6 under HDMI ARC connection instruction. When it fails to communicate you wont hear any sound on the soundbar. Hopefully an update will fix this issue.

I bought this sound bar to use for my TV and also to play music in my living room. My expectations weren't very high as the reviews overall seemed so-so on average. Right out the box, it came with all the pieces I needed to mount it to the wall under my TV. I hooked it up to my Samsung TV easily, it took only a couple minutes. The bar powers up automatically when I turn on my TV. If I decide I want to just play music, I can power it up through the Bluetooth menu in my iPhone so there's almost no need to use the remote it comes with at all. As a stand alone stereo system, I really wasn't expecting much. I was thoroughly surprised! The sound bar's quality is amazing, the highs and mids are very clear. After turning up the volume on the subwoofer a bit, it kicks nice and hard. It doesn't get distorted or drown out the sound bar or anything. You can also download Sony's SongPal app, to connect multiple speakers to one device for multi-room listening. For the price, this is quite a deal.

My Sony TV has 4 speakers in it and it still wasn't great soundwise. Yes there are better sound bars out there but for what you pay this one sounds and works great. Use a high speed hdmi cable when connecting to arc hdmi input.

this this is a great purchase for its price. amazing sound system. works perfectly fine with my new 65" Sony Bravia. sound quality is excellent. at first I thought I might have to buy HDMI cable for this system but then I was informed to use the digital optic cable that came with the system. no hdmi required unless your tv don't have the digital optic cable hook up. Anyway, go ahead abd buy it if you are thinking about it.

Bought 2 of these yesterday, one for a kitchen and one for a computer room. Only running at about half volume and half subwoofer setting and totally increases the sound quality. The bluetooth addon is just a little frosting on the cake

    AWESOME with the Sony XBR

This soundbar works very well with the Sony XBR-65X850D as it should be. First I used the optical out of the TV into the optical in of the soundbar. Sounded Great and no noticeable lag to the wireless subwoofer. The only down side is that it is not sync to the Sony TV. Then I tried using the HDMI high speed cable and connected to the HDMI ARC of the TV to the HDMI input to the soundbar. Again, sound was AWESOME but now when I turn on the TV the soundbar also turns on. I had all the remotes (Directv, Sony Tv and Sony Soundbar) capable of control the the TV and Soundbar at the same time.

Based upon the experience of my friends and neighbors, I knew the sound I should expect from a new 4K HD TV would be inadequate. Sure enough, the sound on my new Sony 850D was not adequate, particularly for my spouse who wears hearing aids. After much research, I decided to buy the Sony CT390 sound bar. If you will use it to just watch TV and movies, this unit produces very nice sound and there is no reason to spend more money for over kill. One of the reasons I bought a Sony was the seamless integration into my system and the reduced frustration of trying to integrate products from multiple brands. I was not disappointed. It also provides a nice consistent look when mounted on the wall under the TV.

My intention when going to best buy was to get a Samsung sound bar to go with my brand new 65 inch Samsung 4K tv. But after hearing the Samsung sound bars next to the Sony in store I went with the Sony due to its superior rich sound. Sounds best on the movie setting and I left my wired Sony subwoofer hooked up to my old Sony receiver and when watching Jurassic World it was just as good as being at the movies! All I needed was some popcorn!

This is a solid buy for $200, but you get what you pay for. There are better quality sound bars out there. This one sounded better in the store. Be careful when checking store display items. They play little tricks on the consumer. My advice: play with all the settings and really check out what you are buying before swiping that credit card.

Sony has always made superb quality items. This specific soundbar is beyond my expectations. The price kinda threw me off, I expected something cheaply made but to my surprise this is a great quality item. Input options (HDMI or Optical ) are helpful. Sound settings are extremely good. Works great with PS4 Pro, XBox One, Cable(XFinity)
