New main board would cost $300. Even if main board is replaced could only get a 90 day warranty on the new main board. No more SONY TV's for me.

First I must say that Best Buy bent over backwards to help me find a television that had a stand that would fit on top of my cabinet. I had a Samsung 39 inch on a pedestal stand and wanted to replace it. No such luck. So I ended up with this Sony which has more features than i will ever use. The first problem was with the stand. It is supposed to screw into the bottom of the television. So my daughter carefully laid it down on the sofa and went to find that there weren't any screw packed with the television. She found some screws with my little box of nails and screws that she made work. She set the television on top of the cabinet and immediately one screw fell out. So now I have to be careful not to move the cabinet or bump the television. My daughter got all the wires connected and finally got the picture to come on. Second problem was we could not figure out how to program it. The remote came without directions or picture showing what each button does, The middle of the remote has a button with 2 rings around it. The button is the select, inside ring is up, down left, right, the outer ring is for all the functions and is the only ring that is labeled. The problem is the rings are so close together that there is a good chance of hitting the outer ring when trying to use the inner ring. I could not get my remote for my cable box to work except to pull up the cable guide and select a channel. I was ending up using both remotes. I went on Sony website to find out what each button was for since the color buttons are only labeled with the color. Most of the labels are grey on black and hard to see. The remote does not have a light feature so labeling buttons in white would have been the smart thing to do. Unfortunately Sony did not have a picture of the remote showing which button do what. The third problem was I couldn't figure our how to program the set or get my DVD to work. The second morning when I turned on the television I got a message about an update. When the update was finished it said to use a button on the remote that was not on the remote. In the end I had to call my Cox cable company to get a technician to come to my home to set up the set and get everything working. Now finally I have my cable remote that will work, a DVD that will work and the technician even labeled the HDMI I would need for the DVD to work. I will say that the picture is good. the volume is tricky since it has to be all the way up to 23 for normal viewing until music comes on and then it is much too loud. I would give it a 3 star but because screws were missing I can only give it a 2 star rating. Would I recommend this television? Yes to most people but not to my friends that are as old as I am and would have the same problems as I had.

Sony XBR800E - Not Up to Bravia Standards

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

It's hard to go wrong with a Sony Bravia TV given that Sony has led the pack for years as their higher-than-average pricing suggests. Unfortunately, this Sony 4k HDTV did not deliver the goods I have come to expect from this brand. For starters, while this set in the 43" size provides more connectivity options than most other sets — which is a necessity for those of us who are still using pre-HDMI 5.1 home theater sound systems — only HDMI 2 and 3 are capable of full bandwidth connectivity to newer 4K devices. (This means that if you don't read your manual and set up any externally-connected devices on the proper HDMI port, only 4K up-scaling will be achieved vs. native UHD/HDR potential.) By contrast, the most closely-aligned competitor in terms of being compatible with both older and newer devices, the LG 43UK6500AUA, allows for full bandwidth (4K/HDR compatibility) on all four of its HDMI ports. Second, Sony's internal speakers are below average. I have limited expectations for LED TV speakers — they're very small, after all — but these do not meet the performance standards of older Bravia sets in my experience. As a result, buyers should not expect to use this TV without a connected soundbar or A/V setup. The real problem with this model, however, is that it does not offer the contrast ratio necessary, even with Sony's contrast enhancement features enabled, to display a sufficient level of detail in poorly lit scenes. Once I compared the same dark scenes in "Dead Files" on this and other sets I own, it was apparent that this Sony TV has an intractable shortcoming not only in terms of dark scene detail but overall crispness of the picture from any source. If the drawbacks were limited to not showing quite as much shadow detail, I might ignore it. However, there are other picture quality problems that are difficult to overcome. Sony's "Light Sensor" that at first was a selling point — offering the ability to auto-brighten or dim the screen depending on ambient light conditions — turned to disappointment once I realized that my difficulty getting the color to display without a color-cast was directly connected to this feature being on. (Once turned off, whites began to look white again and blues stopped showing up as teal.) On the plus side, Sony color, thanks to the Triluminous feature, pops more — which should be a selling point for anyone who prefers their TV color to be more vivid than accurate. Unfortunately, this set's poor contrast does not do for detail what the Triluminous feature does for color. A visit to a ratings website for HDTVs confirmed that the Sony XBR800E has low black levels and contrast ratios — even by IPS LED standards. While the contrast performance is an inherent limitation of this particular 4K HDTV set, it is also possible I purchased a faulty product. For one, I have not come across other reviews suggesting that the picture presets, even when set to a safe choice — "Standard"/neutral Picture preset — should in any way be expected to impart an overly-warm cast. (In particular, Cinema Home and Cinema Pro presets impart such a strong yellowing of the image that people on screen appear severely jaundiced no matter the content/source.) Second, on standard definition content such as reruns of the old show "Unsolved Mysteries", the bottom of the video frame does not cut off cleanly but instead displays RGB video noise (this was not the case when viewed on any other set in my home using my same preferred viewing method, a ROKU). Likewise, when viewing local news broadcast content, I could see the Sony's backlight run the entire length of the right side in the form of a blinding white line. (Flash-lighting issues were also observed the entire length of the bottom of the screen on some types of older content.) This suggests that the TV is not scaling the pictures big enough to meet up with the edges of the LED screen, allowing for back-light bleed through (likely Sony could fix this with a firmware update but given that this is a 2017 model I wouldn't hold my breath). In any event, there is no way in the menu system — and I explored every last part — to correct for this. Sony either needs to rethink their prices, which do not provide double the value of a 4K HDR HDTV with like size and features, or double down on the basics of a good product: consistent image quality, adequate contrast, out-of-the-box color accuracy and built-in audio performance worthy of the Bravia name. For those who have an opportunity to view two 4k UHD/HDR IPS/LED sets side by side, expect to appreciate, much as I have, that the picture quality on this Sony is not as crisp thanks to the poor contrast performance. Given how much flack LG's IPS 4K panels have taken for their apparently inferior RGBW pixel structure, one does not expect any contest. But the reality, above and beyond any other consideration, is that better contrast levels make for an improved picture — even on an "inferior" panel. The good news? I did not observe cloudy grays or the uneven blacks that the professional reviewers have flagged with respect to this model. Even so, Sony's claim to fame — superior image quality — isn't delivered by this product. Given that this set runs nearly double the cost of competitors from Samsung, LG, TCL and Vizio, picture quality compromises cannot be ignored.

    Questionable 60Hz Support

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This TV is great for either 1080p or 2160p display modes. Anything inbetween, it fails horribly. It does not render 60Hz display in anything between those two resolutions. It can only render 30Hz. So, while this TV supports 60Hz, it does not support it for let's say 1440p or 1200p display modes. So, if you plug in a gaming PC & strive for the best experience possible like I did & tried 1440p you'd be surprised to find out that you're stuck at 30FPS with Vsync enabled. Some games don't work at 30FPS, like Injustice 2 on PC or really any fighting game. These require 60FPS in order to function properly. You can fix this by simply changing the game settings to 1080p or turning off Vsync, but it's still odd that this TV just won't run in 60Hz for other display modes & it doesn't mention that in it's specs. That being said, though, this TV is still fantastic & deserves a 4 star rating, would be a 5 star if it didn't have this one issue I find annoying. Everything else so far has be great. All other modes from 480p, 720p, 1080p, & 2160p work & run as you'd expect with fantastic visual output. If you view it from an angle there can be some small distortion, as you'd get from almost all TV's, mainly from the back light, this TV is still great for my personal needs, mainly being gaming & PC work. You can link your android phone, google accounts, netflix, crunchy roll, youtube, amazon, google play movies & tv, pretty much everything you can do on a phone you can do on this TV. You can even download & play some games on the TV itself. I personally got the 43" model for my bedroom & it looks great. HLG modes on older consoles especially look fantastic. HLG mode does not work with component cables, sadly, so if you are a gamer like me & want the best visual representation you can afford you may need an adapter of some kind for HDMI output. 4 Stars

    Very good basic 4k tv.

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

First of all, this is definitely not one of Sony's performance tvs. It's basically a tv you set up for use in a bedroom and such. You're not going to find a lot of the features and such on their high end models. That being said, I must say that the TV still displays an excellent picture, very good for a basic model like this one. Setup was straightforward and easy. I like the design and function of the remote, larger and easier to operate than the Samsung it replaced. As with several other reviewers, the one issue I have with the tv is the sound quality. It basically below Sony's standards especially when listening to a DVD audio through the tv. The best way to correct this is to go purchase a good soundbar. I bought a Bose Solo 5 at a Bose factory store in Texas last weekend and when I told the salesperson why I was buying it, he knew exactly which model of Sony tv I was referring to! After setting up the soundbar, it has corrected the audio issues mentioned earlier in this review. Summary, if you're looking for a very good entry level 4k tv, buy this model but be sure to get a good soundbar to go along with it.

    Good, not great!

When you think of Sony, you expect great quality, however, with this television you get a good television with a few quirks. Namely, the Android operating system! Now and then for no reason the television will just freeze and reboot, I suspect this is the Android OS needing to reboot, I got this to stop by turning off the auto update in the menu settings and every now and then I will go in when I first turn it on and have it check for a software update, as it has gotten older there are less and less updates for it, so it has not been an issue the last year or so, but early on it wanted to update all the time. The picture is amazing once you go in and set it to your tastes and since I use this in a bedroom the sound is fine. Overall, I am happy with the purchase.

Picked up the XBR43X800E over a week ago now and I love it! I've always been a big fan of Sony and this model did not disappoint. I wanted to replace my 1080p Sony for the bedroom and this was a great choice. The picture is crisp and the sound is as expected considering the dimensions of most LED tvs out there. Pleasantly surprised with the inclusion of Android OS as well.

    Bluetooth Receiver vs Transmitter

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Spoke to Sony support and learned only their 49" or greater Bravia tvs are Bluetooth transmitting (and receiving). Meaning I bought the 43" expecting to be able to connect headphones via bluetooth built in the tv. It is not possible with the 43" because it only has Bluetooth receiving capability. You will have to buy a Bluetooth transmitter to use headphones with the 43" and less. Otherwise, a very nice tv.

Great display, not so great other things

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have to be honest, they display is fantastic. However, I have my problems with it. First of all, the UI is very laggy and sluggish. Frame rates are low when navigating through menus and it takes forever just to find and select one option. And leaving menus is a headache too, you have to constantly hit the back button. Also, HDR recognition is weak. Unlike LG models it doesn't pop up and tell you that you are viewing HDR content. You have to go into picture settings (with the annoying UI) and it'll be somewhere in there. When you hit the "display" button to see the screen details, it doesn't mention HDR even though you know it's HDR content. LG made it really simple. The native YouTube app doesn't display HDR content which is very odd. HDR during gaming (even on game mode) also has a high input lag. If you don't really care about details and just want a great display, its great. But for HDR and other UI things it is very annoying. Will most likely return.

When it comes to tv image quality, there is almost nothing that beats Sony. That being said, there are a couple of things that keeps me from giving it a full 5 stars. I wish Sony would allow for letterbox image cropping on ALL inputs. Not all of us are in love with letterbox! The built-in Wi-Fi radio is weak it seems. My router is very close by the tv. There should be zero Wi-Fi signal issues. Great tv overall though!

    Amazing as a Computer Monitor

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Without going into technical details, the monitor has all the right features to be a perfect computer monitor. In short, I was able to configure it to look the same as my $800 Dell 2K in terms of color, text sharpness, etc. View angle, text sharpness, and view angle are just mindblowing — all of that at 60Hz. One small downside is that the screen reflects a little. Yeah, the blacks are not ideal, but it's because of IPS matrix which you want for a monitor. If you pick Samsung with excellent blacks, you won't get an IPS matrix for the same price. The pros of this monitor outweigh the cons by much.
