The X90J is one update away from a must have
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Sony proves once again why it is still top of the game with its mid-tier offerings. I have owned several Sony displays over the years, but have also been swayed by other brands offering similar specs on paper at a fraction of the cost. After some not so great luck finding a TV to pair with my next-gen consoles, I decided to go with the X90J. While it offers full bandwidth HDMI 2.1 inputs the X90J does not currently support auto low latency mode (ALLM) or variable refresh rate (VRR). Rumors from people in the business say expect a holiday release which will coincide with the update to the PS5 this holiday bringing the tech to both devices. This is still up in the air and X900H owners were promised similar updates, but a year later there’s still no sign of its release. I purchased this tv 98% for gaming on both the Series X and PS5, so this review will mainly cover that performance of the TV. I recently came from a well known eastern brand display that offered on paper similar… if not superior specs on paper. This display out of the box impressed, but once put through its paces, fell apart under the stress test. The Sony on the other hand excelled with everything I threw at it. My PlayStation stress test games are God of war, Ghost of Tsushima, The last of us 2 and Remedy’s Control. All of the games serve to highlight a displays strengths and weaknesses. The first party PlayStation games above help judge HDR performance, since their implementation is considered the best in gaming. The Norse realms of God of war are awe inspiring and the destroyed beauty of The last of us 2 with its almost entirely natural light sources are eerily realistic. Sony’s XR processor uses machine learning to analyze the image being put to screen to enhance areas of focus. The offers high detailed areas without the over sharpening found on other displays. Processing on the X90J is also top notch with almost zero color banding or posterization across the full spectrum. This means shadow detail in dark scenes are natural and smooth without the obvious lines found on some other displays. Motion is another area of the display that excels pair the processing with an ultra fast pixel response you get smooth motion without unintended blur or ghosting sometimes associated with VA based displays. The use of a VA panel ensures improved black level performance over its IPS based counterparts. It employs a full array local dimming backlight with 24 zones. Local dimming helps the display hit about 6300:1 contrast ratio, which will offer deep black levels and a dynamic image. While only having 24 zones Sony’s software and hardware know how make it punch above its weight with minimal blooming in normal content. If Sony manages to add ALLM/VRR this holiday, the X90J could be the mid-tier gaming set to beat in 2021.

This Bravia is a great pick and I am impressed with its picture and features. I searched before buying and I don't think there was a better choice for the dollars! Side firing tweeters helps and it sounds pretty good and will do fine until I add a soundbar.

It is as close as you can get to an oled picture. It can produce very deep blacks. I'm totally pleased with the set. While it does have a ton of adjustments that can be made, the out of the box picture is fantastic. The sound quality is very treble focused but a good quality soundbar or home theatre setup corrects that.

Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I just purchased and received the Sony 50X90J Smart TV and the picture on this set is Phenomenal! You must see this television up close to truly believe what I am saying. While it has a VA panel, it does loses brightness and color when viewing from the sides but if you're looking at it head on, it is great. From the color levels to its black levels, no one beats Sony...although Samsung comes close. The way this TV handles motion is way better than Samsung since Sony understands motion technology while Samsung's is very poor. The sound from the built in speakers is not the best but a soundbar might be what you need to hook this TV up to. As for me, I like the sound of the built in speakers but you may not. In closing, I am super psyched I purchased this TV and I do definitely recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade their TV's!

Would be a great TV if you have cable and the TV is being controlled by the cable box. Cons - If you don't have cable, it loads apps and streaming very slowly and I am plugged directly into my router. I switched from Wi-fi to directly connecting to my router because Wi-fi randomly shuts off then comes back on occasionally. About every 1 in 15 times when loading an app, the app just shuts down and takes you back to the home page. No support for older sound bars. Sound from the TV speakers is weak. Navigating in a TV steaming app is slow and takes a lot of clicks.

To start, please ensure the TV software is updated. Software Update is an update program that includes key features, applications, bug fixes, and feature improvements. Connect the TV to the Internet, and set Automatically check for update or Automatic Software Download to On to receive the updates automatically. Issues, such as the device can't connect to the network, errors occur when trying to connect, or service unavailable, may be caused by several factors. So disappointed!!

Oh, what a disappointment! I don't need over saturated colors, but its colors are quite washed. And sound is muffed, like talking in a box. I noticed these 2 issues on day 1. I have tried all different settings, no improvement. And the best part, after only 21 months, it stopped working. It shuts itself just a few seconds after launching the home screen and shows blinking red lights. I only used it no more than 5 hours per week. So this is Sony brand trusted.

Thank you for your time writing this review and we do apologize for the confusion. You may use the basic TV functions without having an internet connection. You'll be able to use a cable box or an antenna to watch TV channels, connect Bluray/DVD player, and do everything else that a regular TV does. However, you will not able to use any of the included video streaming apps or some features like voice assistant and many more without connecting the TV to the internet. To get the most out of your TV, we recommend to connect the TV to your internet.
