I’ve been a Sony loyalist for years, but the picture quality on this model is substantially inferior to comparable LG and Samsung models. The screen is too bright, contrast is pretty bad, and it can’t handle dark scenes. Keep shopping, you can do better. I returned this item because the size turned out to be inappropriate for the room, but I would have returned it anyway because of image quality.

The KD50X80J includes a light sensor that optimizes picture brightness to room conditions, boosting brightness in light rooms and reducing it in dark ones so you get the perfect view. With Object-based HDR remaster, the color in individual objects on-screen is analyzed and the contrast adjusted, unlike most TVs where contrast is only adjusted along one black-to-white contrast curve. Our unique ambient optimization technology with light sensor automatically adjusts picture and sound to your environment. The TV has picture and sound adjustment settings wherein you can configure various settings related to the TV display such as color and brightness for picture quality, or screen size. Simply Press the (Quick Settings) button on the remote control, then select [Settings] — [Display & Sound] — the desired option.

I thought I really lucked out when the specs for this 50" screen Sony stated that the feet were 26.25" apart. After purchasing and assembling, the feet are actually 30" apart. Consequently, the unit would not fit on the console table I already had for the unit. I kept the TV and wound up spending extra hours and money to acquire a console table that was wide enough for the TV.)
