The bottom of the TV gets super hot after few minutes of use. It is so hot that you can not touch the bottom with your bare hands.

    Amazing

The picture looks amazing! Most of the content I watch is upscaled 1080i/p and it looks sharp and vivid. The only issue I have seen so far is upscaling 720p content on some channels (most notably ABC). Simple set up for basic watching. It's been only a week with the new TV and we couldn't be happier. I can't wait to have more time to play with the advanced features. Don't forget to download the TV SideView app to control your new TV with your smartphone. The Guide could be better but it's not like I"m using that as my primary source for guide data. Sony released an update to its software for Netflix 4K content (to answer the critics that it wasn't available at release time). There aren't too many apps available directly from the TV but you can visit the Google Play store on any PC/Mac and easily search and load apps to your TV. Set up was simple! (Side note to the Best Buy Delivery Team who installed the base mount and hauled away my old Sony KDS-R50XBR1 RPTV. These guys were on time, efficient, and professional. Couldn't have asked for a better experience. The new stand was shipped separately and arrived a week earlier than expected. While it took me a while to put it together, the whole thing looks beautiful.)

First 4K TV And Please With It

    Posted .

I purchased this TV recently so I will update if my opinion sways; however, stepping back from the TV now and looking at it, I really am glad I purchased my 55" 4K UHD TV. Am I equally as excited about the eye wincing, teeth grinding, lip trembling price point I paid to achieve this feat, not so much but still glad none-the-less. Now I get to play games and watch Football, ALL IN 4K! Bug Fixes : After the TV was settled up on its stand and in place it launched without a hitch and led me through its setup. While completing the setup I noticed that this TV had a stuttering problem like others have mentioned so after enduring a few hiccups, I was more than ready to find the culprit and end it. The first thing I always do whenever there is an issue with technology is see if there is an available update. Of course I hit the ball out of the park and after a 20 minute update, the problem went away. Display : The quality on this TV is amazing and thanks to its new TRILUMINOS Display Technology and X1 Processor, it makes 720p and 1080p look much better. Whether I'm watching Guardians of the Galaxy on my Sony - BDPS6500 bluray player, connected via a Monster 9' Black Platinum HDMI Cable or watching a show on Netflix, this Sony 55" 4K - XBR55X850C displays everything in a sharper and cleaner image. Sound : Although the sound quality of this 4K sounds better than the many TV's I've owned in the past, it isn't the loudest. I decided I'd better not turn the volume on the 4K too loud fearing that I might damage the speakers so I got a Sony sound bar instead. I currently have the HTCT780 hooked up and it sounds GREAT! I will not let sound alter my final decision because most if not all TVs don't sound that great anyways without a speaker system. Content: I read a lot of reviews before making my decision in the right 4K TV and chose this sleek screen. I remember reading a lot of wavering reviews for this 4K TV during my decision and the biggest reason why I decided to give this Sony 55" a shot was because a lot of the lower reviews mentioned little to no content. Although I agree this statement is true, these TVs are generous enough to upscale content for us and make it look great. On top of that, they've added new features to compensate for the missing content such as NFC, screen mirroring, Google Cast (Chromecast). After consenting in Sony's 55" 4K I do however hope and look forward to seeing a lot more 4K content in the future.

    Finally, an excellent 4K TV

I purchased this Sony XBR55X850C TV from Best Buy as an open-box sale for below $1,000 in late December, and I am finally getting around to providing my review. This is my third 4K TV purchased in a span of one-month (I returned the first two) and I cannot say enough about it. The first purchase was a Samsung 50" SUHD7000 series TV. Good picture but the 60mhz refresh rate was just too slow. I returned the Samsung for a Vizio 50" M-C1 series. Another good TV especially while watching Blu-Ray movies. However the wife did not like the picture especially from the side. Third time was a charm and I really like the Sony. The color saturation is great and the picture upconversion even while watching 720P cable is good. The refresh rate of 120mhz means the picture motions real well. I have not tried the 3D as yet even though I do have glasses from my other Panasonic plasma 3D TV. Watching 4K content through Netflix is great. Good picture. I used the calibration settings provided by Rtings and, although the picture looks good all around, I still feel it needs further tweaking. I am still on the fence on whether to have Best Buy Geek Squad calibrate the TV, although I feel $250 is a little high. I would like to know if there are better options. Overall, I would recommend this TV to others and I am certainly glad I have a TV I am satisfied with. Plus, the wife is happy with the picture which means..."Happy Wife, Happy...."

Was told the 4k Sony was set at factory settings. The picture is fair at best. I refuse to be abused by having to pay $250 for it to be "calibrated" so that I can get the best possible picture. Seems only right that the Geek Squad installation and setup would leave you with a TV that is fine tuned without another $250 being paid.

Have had the TV for only a month and the picture jumps and clicks all the time. Contacted Best Buy who immediately passed me off to Samsung. This has happened twice. Samsung took control of my TV and basically did a reset both times. Neither time fixed the problem. Also the support person was very hard to understand.

Excellent value for an lcd set

I purchased this set for 1199.00. First the bad parts about it. The Google apps are buggy. This may be the Android OS or the apps. I downloaded the PBS app and started to watch a show. After 15 minutes or so, the app crashed. I lost my spot in the program when I restarted it. When I fast forwarded to the last viewed portion of the show, the audio refused to work. The OS update procedure crashed when I was setting up the set. It hasn't attempted to update the OS since and I do not see a way to manually start it. The voice control screws the set up when I attempt to use it to turn it off and such. It loses the hdmi number when it is restarted manually, forcing me to use the input. On the positive side, the picture that this thing puts out is stunning. I hear talk of how the set needs to be calibrated for best picture quality. I disagree with that assessment. Calibrated sets are dull and lifeless. I like images that pop in color and brightness. This set delivers. It also has great looking blacks and grey levels. Shows, like Universe on the Science Channel, are a marvel to behold. This image quality is surprising on an edge lit set. Only a hint of flash lighting and clouding occur on the very highest brightness levels. On normal brightness levels, they are not apparent. I hope that the glitchy app thing can be corrected but that does not compel me to return the set.

First! Don't let the bad reviews on this tv fool you. Most were all before the latest and greatest software updates! Now that they are out, there is no better tv in this size and price point out there. Now then, I just moved into a new place and figured it was time for a new bigger tv. I started by going online, researching, reading reviews, etc and going to best buy and others till I thought I knew all about each brand and model. What's out there is almost overwhelming. Most brands all have 3 or 4 models in the same size that all look similar. So beware of the TVs that places are selling in some super sale. They are always the lowest level in that size and are usually Junk. I wanted a 55" 4K ultra HD and had a cap of 2000$. The top 2 were Sony and Samsung. So I went to best buy and started comparing. First thing that caught my eye was how bright and vivid the Samsung was. Cool! But don't be fooled. Ricardo at best buy was awsome and let me go into the menu's of both tv's, adjust the picture settings and input different feeds. After toning down the Sam and up just a little on the Sony they were REAL close with the edge going to Sony. After playing with the new Android software in the Sony along with actually checking the build quality of both I was sold on the Sony hands down. IMO, Samsung tv's make up for poor build quality by giving you lots of bells and whistles none of which you will use after a couple of weeks. I got the Sony home. Set up was very easy and it updated automatically. The android and menu functions are very user friendly and after spending a little time getting familiar with the tv and adjusting th picture how I wanted it......Well the picture was jaw dropping! My girl and I watched tv for hours that night. After a week I found some of the weak channels were a little strange but found the hd channels, blue ray and especially Netflix more than made up for them. Really an amazing tv.

Read all the reviews only issue I see in common is the lyp sync is ouuta place on Hulu. Picture and sound is outstanding with a high quality source. Sound is good after using the built in EQ. picture requires some detail in the adjustments, it is not simply plug and play for all sources, this tv is meant for the videophile, who wants to tweak his or her preferences. A lot of the adjustments are still above my head, but I wanted to future proof my tv for about 10 yrs,. Nflix is up and running, not Hulu. I have no acces to 4k content but this picture out perfoms my Plasma Vierra by a mile. HDMI ARC works but seems to only carry 2.0 stereo, from the apps. It might be a setting I need to tweak. Two updates loaded with out issue , just look at Sony and its history with the ps3 system they are not going to sell a product and put out bad updates or hurry something. They will update and tweak this tv for years to come. The trilumonous display is awesome. Have the 2015 matching Blu ray player and could not be happier. I did insist on a 30 day retuen policy from BB though, just in case. But I dont think I will be returning it. Remember it is not plug n play there is a ton of adjustments for all types of video viewing. I will be behing the curve for a good while.

A good TV that has only gotten better

We bought this TV set a few months ago after our 1080p set couldn't be repaired under warranty, just going on a "seat of our pants" factor from what we saw in-store and what wouldn't cost us anything to take home with the money from the warranty claim. It has plenty of pros - HDR compatibility (thanks firmware update), Android TV apps, Playstation Now, great picture, good sound for a TV set, thin build (but not micro-thin like with the XBR900 series or LG's OLED TV sets). It comes with two remotes - a new-fangled touchpad that's alright and connects with bluetooth to the TV, and an old-school button remote made the way Sony has always made them. Playstation Now is a feature, and it works great, but it requires a DualShock 4 controller. Miracast is part of the package, as is Google Casting, so screen mirroring with many Windows and Android devices and viewing what you're watching on your connected device through your TV is covered. Also, unlike many 4k TV sets, you get 4 HDMI ports with 4k/60 capability while handling a 4:4:4 signal and HDR video. It has some cons - non-standard mounting for a large TV (300x300 pattern for the 55", 400x300 for the larger sets; every other TV I've had over 42" has been 400x400, and I've had quite a few over the last 8 years), the 55" model is edge-lit instead of directly backlit (which, to me, should have made the 55" its own model designation separate from the 65" and 75" versions). a power-on light that's annoyingly bright (but thankfully can be turned off), it doesn't come with 3D glasses (but it uses the bluetooth-based industry standard, so you don't have to buy the expensive Sony-branded glasses), and some of the streaming apps you'd use on your Android phone haven't quite made it to Android TV yet (but that's not on Sony, that's on Google and Android devs). As far as picture goes, I'm glad I bought this one over the comparable Samsung. The picture OOTB wasn't nearly as oversaturated. It was also much easier to calibrate than the Samsung because the picture settings were only a little off instead of overblown. Picture quality depends on your source and resolution; generally, allow the TV to upconvert your picture if you can. My local over-the-air channels that broadcast in 720p look great through the antenna but a little blurry through my Comcast X1 box (using HDMI and it's forced 1080p output); my local OTAs that broadcast in 1080i also look great through the antenna but feature interlacing artifacts through the X1 box. Most likely, a cable box that allows pass-through will provide a much better picture (generally speaking, cable companies don't upconvert programming at the headend since customer equipment can do the same thing). With most TVs and audio, people generally don't care because they'll connect a soundbar or surround system; I had to run surround any time I watched my previous TV because the integrated audio was that bad. With the Sony, the integrated audio isn't bad. It's a little heavy at the midrange and lacks highs and lows, but with the EQ in its settings, you can fix that. It's no XBR 930 or 940 series, but I don't expect it to be either. With the interface, Sony's already good UI pairs well with Google's UI, which is also very thoughtfully put together. While not as good as Apple TV, it is a little more functional and less in-your-face than Amazon's TV interface. You can turn suggestions on and off, though featured apps can be annoying at times (but easy to scroll past). It's also just as easy to navigate the menu system with the old-school remote as it is with the touch remote or your phone. An added bonus for cord-cutters - both the TV and the remote have a channel guide system that works for over-the-air content. This guide system has proven itself useful a few times for me already while cable TV was offline for maintenance. Wireless connectivity is provided by an 802.11AC wifi interface. It's connected to my AirPort Extreme at 867 megabits per second. There's also an ethernet port for those of you who prefer wired connections, though it's limited to 10/100 connectivity and not gigabit. So all in all, I'm happy with this TV. Great picture, decent for a TV sound, great features for people that watch or stream TV or movies, good connectivity options. Note that I have not used the 3D features of this TV. I am a little disappointed that it's active 3D and not passive, but 3D isn't the killer feature for me.

Every year i buy for new technology , mainly samsung high end. After seeing sony xbr55x900c i jumped ship this year and bought this set. After having two sony x900c had to return do to light bleed problems, other than that a better set than samsung un55js8500.Checked the specs on the x850c ($500.00) less, i exchanged the x900c for the x850c.What a great picture, upscale is 2nd to none, image detail & sharpness is outstanding. When calibrating you first need to check the grey scale first than decrease the green about 12 points using the advanced color temp settings, other than that everything else falls in place.

I have had this TV for 2 months now and it has been a phenomenal experience. I upgraded from a 47" LG 1080p TV with 60 hz to this bad boy and the differences are HUGE. 4K is the real deal as much as people love to play it down. I love being able to watch my Netflix shows in true 4K. The color from the Triluminos is amazing and the HDR feature really brings everything together. It has enhanced my gaming experience by a lot. It's like my PlayStation 4 got a graphical boost but really the TV brought all the good stuff to light. For the price, it easily edges out most other TVs and it's cheaper. Even if it is a 2015 TV. I chose this one over the 2016 X850D only because I wanted 3D as that feature will soon be extinct. I highly recommend this television.
