Best TV among mid range models

I was contemplating between Samsung MU8000 series (price $879.99) and Sony 900 series (price $999.99) and I went with buying Sony TV because of my own perception that Sony TV has better quality control and they don't fail easily. I just bought the Sony TV XBR-55X900E and very happy to see crystal clear picture on 55" screen. Samsung was very little bit bright (about 3% to 5%) in showing images with good contrast, while Sony is dark and the contrast sounded better. For night vision, I felt Sony would look to soothe the eyes with less bright. Both TVs have Auto Color mode, based on external lighting. The Sony TV sound quality is OK but have to be kept on a higher level in living room. Samsung offered twice the audio volume but again I did not feel much difference between 40watts sound and 20 watts sound. Regarding smartness of TV: Samsung has its own operating system called Tizen and Sony adopted Android (Google). Sony ended up using Chromecast Ultra as part of its internal applications and many apps are available. However Sony misses the simple word guess intelligence for filling in, despite backed by Google, while Samsung's Tizen does the word guess work and is simple and faster compared to Google Android TV, in terms of navigation. They also maintain unique and popular apps, but not many and options as in Google Store. Though Sony TV has advertised 4 HDMIs, only 3 are usable. Samsung design of HDMIs is much better and stylish compared to Sony. Samsung Navigation is very easy and very much user friendly, while Sony TV is not. Samsung TV follows you what you are watching and it brings back the show ASAP, while Sony misses those kind of smartness. Samsung TV can also be used as a computer with Internet browser to do many things, Sony TV does not have a Internet Browser. Instead of cable connection for viewing TV channels, I bought a Roku Ultra player which has all the applications (including DirectV Now) and it suffices my needs. My aged parents bought a Sony TV in 1997 (bulky one) as Black Friday deal and it is still going strong after 20 years. My Samsung phones have been breaking exactly every 30 months, I had a Samsung HT system which failed exactly after few months of warranty expiry. These were all played in my mind while trying to select one of the two. The present price $999.99 is a great deal and the Sony TV is very much worth for that price, though Samsung is cheaper and has many eye catching options and facilities.

Read and watched tons of reviews and comparisons on this TV. Definitely lives up to the hype. Probably going to get a 65 inch for the living room.

My only gripe as that audio in is only carried via HDMI1 and not 2 or 3. It was very odd to me. I had to put an HDMI splitter/hub so everything gets pushed to 1. Android TV is a pretty massive upside though!

Sony's midrange 4K UltraHD HDR TV for 2017

    Posted .

Happy Best Buy customer. For those looking for an economical 4K UltraHD HDR LCD TV that is built to stream 4K content, this is it. I'm not an Android mobile phone devotee, but I am an Android TV OS devotee. The Android integration into the XBR55X900E is superb. I can't imagine buying a TV without it. I've read what others have said about the WiFi capabilities of this 2017 model and all I can say is that this TV rocks even with a mediocre WiFi signal (~ 15 Mbps) from my Xfinity gateway on the other side of the house. I've not seen any buffering or delays streaming 4K content from YouTube, Netflix, or Amazon. I even plugged the TV into the 1GB LAN and frankly I didn't see any improvement in the performance of the UltraHD content being streamed. Personally, I think Sony used the best WiFi hardware available for this TV and it shows. Cons: - Excellent contrast with X-tended Dynamic Range Pro XDR Contrast 5x Dynamic Range (HDR) for the most lifelike picture. - Excellent brightness @ 1100 nits - Very good direct LED full-array local dimming and boosting - Black level is suitably pronounced, near OLED, with minimal blooming - The Triluminos panel does a terrific job conveying deep reds, they’re more intense than you might expect from a mid-range LED. - While a UHD Blu-ray player, specifically the Sony UBP-X800, is the best image partner for the X900E, OTT streaming can look similarly impressive. - Expect to see the fine weave in an actor's costume exquisitely detailed. - X1 HDR imaging engine provides Super Bit Mapping 4K HDR and Object Based HDR Remastering to remove color banding sometimes seen in low bitrate content. - Easy TV assembly and set-up. The TV is near calibrated out of the box using the standard settings. However, Sony gives you a wide range of adjustments to calibrate the picture should you need them. - The home menu is the Android TV OS organized in tiers with rows of apps, games, inputs and settings similar to Apple TV and Netflix. - Excellent support for Google Play, Wuaki, PlayStation Video, Spotify and other stuff. - Four HDMI inputs (one back facing, the others side-mounted), all of which are 4K HDCP 2.2 compliant. - Three USBs (one of which is a fast blue 3.0 variant) - A speech enabled remote control for quick navigation through the Android TV OS - Excellent motion handling - Surprisingly good audio - Lightweight, unfussy but elegant design - Thin matt black bezel, offset with aluminum trim - Crafty cable management Cons: - No 3D capability - No Bluetooth - Power brick can be inconvenient which could complicate wall mounting. - Rubber-keyed remote picks up fluff non-stop. - No support for Dolby Vision (requires Sony X1 Extreme processor) TIP: This 4K Ultra HD HDR inhales content at a dizzying rate. Make sure you upgrade your HDMI cables to the latest specification (HDMI 2.0b) which supports 18 Gbps, 4K, HDR10, Audio Return Channel (ARC), DTS-HD Master Audio, and Dolby among other things. The economical Monoprice Ultra Slim High-Speed 18Gbps Active HDMI Cable is lightweight and ultra slim and works well with this TV. The newer Monster HDMI cables sold at Best Buy will also work well, although they are thicker and not as flexible as the Monoprice Ultra Slim cables using 36AWG conductors. Feel confident that you are buying a truly great economical 4K UltraHD HDR TV. The picture clarity will leap out at you, even from across the room, day or night.

This TV has more motion blur and jutter than my last sony tv. This Motion Flow is suposed to be higher than last one rated at 240. Both were used with out of box settings. Newer technology not always better.

Sony puts out a solid product...I have had their TVs since the 60's, when they first came out with Color sets. I did buy the 5 year warranty.
