Hard to setup, some features are not working

Bought it to hook up Sony Bravia Tv, DVD and PC, setup was not easy, the manual is somewhat sketchy at best. Hard to understand. But it is working now properly with TV and DVD at least. I have connected optical from PC's sound card and tried to play audio through Zone2, After many hours still cannot get it to work. Despite playing with all possible settings it just refuses to play. Sound is coming from main front speakers instead of those hooked up to Zone 2 terminals. Using Zone 2 is just nightmare, not only I have the problem. Just check out the web. The remote is poorly constructed, you will not have access via remote to all sources, have to get up and use the unit. Also, Zone2 cannot be operated from pilot. It should be done differently to make users life easier. Seems like the whole thing is not though well and overpriced. I regret not buying something else

Pluggie Half Workie, Next Day No Workie

I bought this with high hopes. After a rather ridiculous amount of research and reading a lot of good press, I decided to branch out from my stubborn bias towards Yamaha A/V equipment. I'm sorry I did. I'm no Bill Gates or the lesser known Apple guy but I'm competent and this thing has just been a pain. Day one I get the receiver home and with giddy excitement I check all my wiring, read the instruction (that's right I'm a man and I read them.)hook everything up and give it a test run with some Mr. Bungle. To my surprise only the front right speaker has sound. I shut it off and review the manual again, double check my settings fire up some Tribe Called Quest aaannnndddd MEHhh, same problem. Well, I'll fix it tomorrow I think and head to bed. The next day the sun rises, the cock crows, I spring out of bed because today is the day I bask in sound glory. I throw some breakfast at my kids and shove their tiny excitable selves onto the bus, grab a coffee and the manual maybe I missed a setting for stereo playback. As it turns out, no it's all good on my end. I unhook all the speaker cabling cut strip and re-attach everything. Fire up the receiver and low and behold NOTHING, and I mean N-O-T-H-I-N-G! It won't turn on. The receiver will click a few times like it wants to power up, the indicator light flashes a few times and nothing. It's going back today and I'm going to get a Yamaha. It's a shame really, this sports some good specs. Every A/V review I read praised the sound quality, they loved the built in Google Cast and the fact that it can also transmit over Bluetooth for you wireless headphone lovers, no dongle needed! But if it won't work then all of that means jack, bummer.

This replaced an old Yamaha of mine that, to be frank, outlived its usefulness years ago, but what a difference in my sound and sound control now that we have this new unit. Now I can't wait to get one of the new tvs so I can really use it as it was meant to be used.

    Not good for multi-zone

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Beware that you sacrifice back surround in main if you want zone 3. Must use separate amp for true zone 2 and 3 and maintaine full 5.1 in main zone. Also, no audio from cable/satelite provider for zones 2 and 3 - only bluetooth/usb. So no music channels for zones 2 and 3. Even though Sony advertises as multi-room/multi-zone, you better have an extra amp around to hook up.

Hi Doug, we highlly appreciate your feedback. Since this is a 7 channel receiver, the limitations are to 7 speakers. The possibilities with the STRDN1070 and multi-zone are available in the link below along with some instruction.

    Not enough power.

An all round good receiver with outstanding setup and good menu usability. However, it's no secret Sony is the weak one out of the group in terms of power output. At 8 ohms continuous you can expect maybe 70-75 watts per channel. This is due to having an unusually small power supplying for 7 channel receivers.

2 Bad Units in a Row

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I don't typically write reviews but this experience was frustrating. I purchased this receiver online and picked it up from my local Best Buy. When I hooked it up, one HDMI input would not pass a signal. I did a lot of troubleshooting and confirmed that it was a bad input, not the cable or my source. I tried to exchange it but the store had no more. I got a refund and went to the next closest Best Buy to buy another one. When I got the 2nd one home, TWO HDMI inputs would not pass signal. I contacted Sony support. They gave me 2 ridiculous suggestions, wouldn't answer any of my direct questions (I thought it might be an HDCP issue) and then told me that I would have to send the unit in for repair at my own expense. I promptly returned the 2nd unit. This issue shows up on the Sony Support message boards as a very common issue with this line of receivers. Be forewarned. I've always used Sony for my home AV. From receivers, to Blu-Ray players, to speakers... Their support (or lack of it) with this issue was disappointing. It was a huge waste of my time. I felt like I was more interested in troubleshooting the issue than the Support Rep. No more Sony for me.

Disappointed that I can't watch television while listening to music through the main speakers when I run the cable box through the receiver to my television. Can't watch cable and listen to my music at the same time.

    HORRIBLE experience!!!

This was the worst receiver I have ever purchased, glad I have 30 day return! I installed into my klipsch 7.1 surround, auto-calibrate went fine. Using my Xbox one, went to Pandora to test the receiver out. I had no sound except through front 2 tower speakers. I went through ALL sound enhancers and sound fields, certain sound fields allowed a 7.0 sound but majority did not. EVEN the Multi-Chan setting put sound out the front two speakers. This was a What The Heck moment so I tried out the FM tuner. WORKED great! Great sound well balanced. Tried Bluetooth, and ALSO worked great. HOWEVER, when using an HDMI input I was getting sound through mostly the front 2 speakers. I made sure the output on the Xbox one was 7.1, it was! to me this showed signs of an issue, called Sony twice for over an hour on both calls. Finally the High Technical support told me that it is because it is a new unit, new software will only allow the best sound filter available when using the HDMI source. I have had 4 other receivers and NEVER had this situation, I will NEVER buy Sony receiver again!

    Good Receiver - Lousy apps

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This is listed as a 'network' receiver, but the only network playback it supports natively is AirPlay and Google Cast. It DOES NOT play Pandora, Spotify, TuneIN, Deezer, or anything else UNLESS you stream those apps directly from your phone or tablet via Bluetooth... I can get that exact functionality from a 25 year old analog receiver and a $10 Bluetooth dongle! The instructions say that you have Pandora playback via the 'SongPal' app... but, it doesn't clearly tell you that the app simply starts up Pandora on your phone and uses Bluetooth to send the audio to the receiver... which sucks because when the phone rings, the music stops! When I get a text message, the notification sound comes through the receiver! (And the music stops!) And of course, it kills my battery... Totally unacceptable... this unit will be returned ASAP.

    Google Cast consistently fails

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I loathe this device. I replaced a perfectly good receiver with the Sony because I wanted to listen to Google Play Music using the built-in Google Cast technology. The Cast implementation is a shambles. Casting fails more than half the time, and there doesn't appear to be a consistent sequence to fix it―rebooting the receiver sometimes works, rebooting the source device sometimes works, starting music on the source device before Casting to the Sony receiver sometimes works. On average, I spend 15 minutes per day fiddling around with settings and restarts in order to get Google Cast to work. This is, by far, the worst audio purchase I've ever made. Huge regrets.

Product Failure or Geek Squad Bad Installation

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have had this unit for quite sometime and have never had any serious problems until recent. The Geek squad technician said after he just LOOKED at the unit that it needed to be replaced even though we could still hear sound but we couldn't see video from the TV. I have purchased numerous products all installed by Best Buy, and it seems like all of thier products fail after a short period of purchase which their technicians really do NOT trouble shoot the product to ensure that the issue can't be repair or needs to be replaced. As far the product, Sony should make the product a little more customer friendly, so that the owners can trouble shoot the products easily. I have had to replace my Sony TV for failed HDMI ports and suspect that this is the issue right now for me. So do I wonder and continue to purchase Sony products or NEVER use GEEK squad service. I am really disappointed that a lot of consumers like me have been mislead by both the product markers and SOME very unqualified GEEKS.

No Multi Zone Support - Stay Away!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This receiver is nothing but problems. I had to send it back to Sony manufacturer product repair twice! yes twice (United Radio, Inc. in New Jersey) only 1month after purchase. I bought it for its multi zone support that ended being the biggest pain ever, basically any digital inputs for Zone 2 do not work, don't waste your time. Even after several hours troubleshooting it with Sony support and United Radio. Multi Zone simple does not work as expected on digital inputs (aka HDMI, Spotify, Google Cast, etc.). On the other hand, analog inputs like CD players (RCA ports) or FM tuner work with no problem. So if you have issues with multi zone, I highly recommend you that you get an Esinkin Bluetooth Audio Adapter in Amazon, this device would connect to RCA ports on the back of the receiver for CD players, and pair any Bluetooth device to Esinkin and play anything you want. I have my iPhone and play Spotify, Pandora, Google Cast, etc this way without issues.... the added benefit is that I can control the volume directly from my iPhone (which I couldn’t do before without having to go to the receiver multi-zone controls) I hope this helps someone that’s stuck with this receiver going through the same frustration I went through. I would probably never buy another Sony receiver again! whatever you do get Bestbuy's extended warranty, it would have save me from dealing with Sony directly, I would had simply returned the product and get my money back.

    1st unit was bad

I had previously owned a 1040 model and had zero problems. I upgraded to this 1070 and the first thing i noticed was the sound sounded muffled no matter what setting i used. After i turned it off then back on it started to sound as good as the 1040 meaning it did not sound muffled and everything was clear,i thought maybe it was just a small glitch being that its new. Well go to use it today and its right back to muffle city no matter what i do. Im going to exchange this unit and give it one more shot.
