I paid $3500 for a 77” Sony tv that lacks the capabilities of my 55” LG tv. I had to contact Sony technical support only to find out it’s not possible to change the aspect ratio when mirroring my screen from my iPad. The only work around is if I’m using an Apple Tv device and change the resolution from 4K to 1080p. I should be able to just cast directly from my iPad to my Sony tv and change the aspect ratio/Wide Mode settings so I’m not stuck with black bars on all four borders. I should have the ability to do an All-Direction Zoom like my old tv could, but the Wide Mode option is completely grayed out on everything I open it from. Incredibly disappointed that my $400 55” LG tv is able to do what my $3500 77” Sony Bravia tv can not. I am returning this overpriced junk and will be sticking with my smaller LG tv instead. Sony technical support confirmed there is nothing else that I can do.

I had to swap my original purchase with a second exact same TV due to issues with the modem. The modem got so bad its impossible to stream anything. Now the second TV is doing the exact same thing and Best Buy is coming out for the 4th time to fix it. Hopefully I can swap it for a TV that works. It's been less than 8 months since I bought the original.

      Hi Jblew,

Thank you for sharing your feedback on using your A80J. We're sorry to hear you are experiencing some unexpected display issues and we apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. We want to make sure that you’re taken care of and go through some troubleshooting with you to make sure your TV is great.

In the meantime, to isolate the issue, follow this procedure if the TV has lines on the screen.

      1. Check if the issue occurs when on the TV's Home screen.

      2. Use the Picture/Sound symptoms feature of your TV to check the cause of the issue.

      3. If the issue doesn't occur while on the home screen, and after performing the Picture/Sound symptoms, check if the screen has the black line while on a different input.

      4. If you're experiencing the issue while using an external device, verify the physical cable connection between the TV and the device, as well as the device settings. If possible, try to use a different cable.

      5. Perform a power reset or restart of the TV..

To do that simply press the power button for about 5-10 secs while the TV is on, then select Restart.

If the issue still occurs, follow the next steps from this article: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/televisions-projectors-oled-tvs-android-/xr-77a80j/articles/00032635

If the recommended steps do not help to resolve the symptom, may we contact you to help further? If so, please email the below information to socialsupport@am.sony.com.

I bought this TV almost two years ago, when my other QLED got broken when taking it down off the wall, and it still works like the day I bought it. The picture is crisp, and the colors are brilliant. It works great for playing Playstation 5, MW III, and watching movies. One of the best features is the screen is made from the same material as cell phones. Gorilla Glass, which means when moving or hanging it on the wall, you don't have to worry about breaking the screen, whereas a regular OLED or QLED you grab the top corner of the screen wrong, and it will break where the Bravia XR, the screen is thin, and solid unlike the old LEDs.

Best TV 2020 if Sony would fix motion and VRR

I ultimately went with A80J 77 because I mostly watch tv, movies and occasionally gaming. I bought it mostly due to its significant improved sdr upscaling in both video and gaming over other oleds like the C1. There is a very noticeable detail improvement and brightness. There are some motion issues with A80J and A90J however setting Sony motion to 2 and clearness at minimum significantly improves that issue. This is definitely a weakness of the TV and something Sony should address. During gaming the motion issues are less noticeable. The A80J 77 price drop being cheaper than the C1 77 was also a factor in my decision for purchase. The picture is excellent with great detail and color depth. If Sony would improve its motion and provide the VRR they claim it includes, it would be best TV of 2020. I feel the minor brightness gains in the A90J is not worth the significant premium.

I have a slight obsession with TV's! I currently have an 85" Samsung QN90A and a 65" Sony Master A9G Oled among many others. I even had a Samsung 8K 85" in the home for a couple of weeks. I purchased this A80J 77" to replace the 65" Sony Master Series Oled. I can honestly say this is a much better TV. It's obviously bigger but also much brighter. The knock on Oled has always been that it's not very bright. This TV is very bright. We love it! It's the best TV that I have ever owned! It's perfect. Now, I will say the 85" Samsung QN90A is pretty close to an Oled. I really like that TV too. If you have the room, I would go with the 85" every time. Size is the most important factor for any TV. Go as big as you can fit. There is an 83" Oled TV but it is considerably more expensive than the 85" QN90A. So, if you can go big, I would suggest the 85" QN90A over the 83" Oled mainly due to price. If the Oled was priced within $500 of the Samsung, I would go with the Oled. But until Oled's are priced more competitively for the 83", buy the Samsung Neo LED. It's a great TV! If you are unable to fit an 85", buy this 77" Oled. Its priced right and like I said...It's perfect! Really. It's the best TV I have ever owned. The only thing that would make it better if there was an 83" or 85" version priced competitively to an LED. I purchased the 77" Oled to go above our fireplace because an 85" would not fit. I purchased the 85" QN90A to go in the man cave where I have more room.

    PHENOMENAL TV

This is a phenomenal television. I made an upgrade to this coming from a 65" Samsung (2014 model hu7150) which was really a great TV, but not 4k and I was looking to improve my viewing experience. I spent about two weeks debating between this a80j and the C1, and I'm glad I pulled the trigger on the Sony. Both are equally great sets, I'm sure, but I chose this one for the supposedly more accurate picture out of the box, and of course Sony's renounced processing power. After living with it for about two weeks, I'm confident I made the right choice. The picture is absolutely gorgeous, and any concerns I had about oled not being bright enough are not an issue. This thing is blinding compared to my old Samsung (which I did have set up for optimal black levels etc, but due to the nature of led, the picture was turned way down to achieve that), the oled has incredible black levels naturally but highlights, especially on HDR content, are intense and this thing is extremely immersive in any of my viewing circumstances but it's really mind blowing while watching in the dark. The XR processor from what I can tell does a great job. Any upscaling it's doing seems good and pretty much any content I throw at it, it manages to make it look beautiful. Most importantly for me, is the way it handles motion. Generally, I can't stand motion smoothing on tvs. It makes everything look so artificial. But with this tv, I haven't noticed any weird soap opera effect. I have it set on minimum or low setting depending on content, and it keeps the picture smooth and mostly blur/judder free without looking fake. The Google TV experience works perfectly but I was coming from a Chromecast with Google TV so I'm well familiar with that already. The TV speakers are acceptable and better than any I've ever heard, but I only tried them once just to see how they worked. It's nice to have but is a not necessarily important for me as I'm hooked into a full surround sound home theater system. I suppose with all that, I really feel like I bought the perfect TV. But, there's always a but - and for this set I feel like burn in concern would be the only issue. Sony has obviously baked in software to try and prevent that, and with that, only time will tell. The pixel shift feature, I must say, is kind of annoying for someone who has a bit of ocd. It moves the picture around slightly on the panel, which leads to the black bars not always being symmetrical, more noticeable on the sides. It's not extremely obvious, but I do notice it. I chose to leave it on however because I would like to preserve the picture quality as long as possible. With that being said, I watch a ton of varied content and am not an avid gamer nor am I using the display as a pc monitor, so I'm hoping to get many years of valuable use from this panel. As far as gaming goes, the Sony only having two 2.1 inputs vs four from the C1 was not a concern for me, but I could see how it would be for some. Either way, when it comes time to upgrade my HT receiver, I will make sure it has the inputs/outputs necessary so that will certainly not be any concern at all. Bottom line, if you're in the market for an oled television in 2021, I honestly feel like this is the one to buy. The a90 is fantastic, I'm sure, but I didn't really consider it. I could have bought two of these vs one 83" a90 and still had 2k cash to spare, so I'm pretty confident the slight improvement in PQ and size increase of the a90 isn't worth it. And vs the 77" C1, well that's just a matter of personal preference, and I'm sure anyone would be equally pleased with either in their home.

Hi TomJulio, You've made a great choice! Thank you for upgrading to your new XR77A80J. We're glad you like the incredible picture quality from the OLED display, black levels, excellent HDR feature, and overall great Google TV experience.

For burn-in concerns, we have equipped this TV with functions that automatically adjust the screen conditions to protect the TV screen from image retention. The good news is that we have taken steps to protect the TV screen from image retention like Pixel Shift and Panel Refresh found within the TV settings. Organic EL displays (OLED) may experience image retention if an image is continuously displayed for a long period of time or the same image is repeatedly displayed. This is due to the characteristics of the materials used to achieve high-definition imaging. To protect your TV screen, avoid using images that may cause image retention.

I bought mine to upgrade from a older LG OLED and all I can say is wow what an improvement. To start off, the 77 inch version of the A80j uses the same Evo panel as the G1 and C2 along with Sony's best processing, which means the 77 inch version is a bit better than the 55 or 65 that's typical reviewed or compared on most sites. What does this mean? It's noticeably brighter than most other OLEDs with only the A90, G2 or S95 being brighter. Highlights and white text especially have more noticeable punch behind them than on a non-Evo panel OLED. Colors on the Sony are way more accurate than my old LG, especially noticeable in skin tones where subtle things like Aloy's rosy cheeks are rosy without overaaturating and making her appear sunburned. Explosions have significantly more meat to them without colors desaturating as badly as my old OLED and are a real spectacle. Watching Last Jedi and things like the throne room duel have such deep lovely red, the brightness of lightsabers clashing is wonderful and Phasma's armor is blindingly bright (in a completely dark room of course). Moon Knight had absolutely stunning visuals on it as well. Of course it goes beyond color, the Sony also has excellent shadow detail and is less likely to crush shadow detail to black the way my old LG did. So subtle dark scenes have more detail, especially evident in the night scenes in Moon Knight where there's very little light going on or The Greatest Showman's opening act with detail being visible in the shadows. Motion handling is one of Sony's strongest areas, with panning shots being noticeably smoother without artificial smoothness (soap opera effect). The reality creation engine does an excellent job handling older sources, episodes of Star Trek Voyager up converted quite nicely. It's not a miracle worker but it's still better than my old LG. In fact just about everything from 4k disc's to streaming looks noticeable crisper and sharper than my old TV. Gaming is an area a lot of reviews knock this TV on, but honestly it does great for most people gaming on it. I have both a gaming PC with RTX 3080 and a PS5 attached to it. I finished up Horizon Forbidden West on it and was stunned at how much better it looked, large vista's of bright snow or desert look way more impactful and highlights stand out from them more than on my older C8. Adaptive sync works perfectly on both my ps5 and my pc on top of it which is awesome. If you're going for a TV like this I think you probably should invest in a soundbar or speakers, but that said while setting it up I did use it's built in "acoustic surface" sound while getting my speakers hooked back up and was rather impressed. It definitely sounded better than the built in speakers on my LG or most other tvs I've heard The software is very smooth and easy to use. If youve used an android phone you'll be right at home Overall I highly recommend the TV. Everything I've watched on it has looked stunning and I've had no issues with it.

Before it died, this TV was wonderful. The OLED screen is noticeably superior to any other TV screen I have used. Movies, TV shows, and video games look amazing. The amount of detail I can see on 4K content is truly stunning, but even lower resolution content looks fantastic. I had never seen colors pop like this. I was watching the 1986 animated movie The Transformers: The Movie on this TV, and not only did the vibrant colors pop in ways I had not seen before, but I could see little visual flaws in the movie that were not apparent in previous televisions. The audio is quite good. It has settings that keep audio levels nice and even so I don't have to constantly ride the volume button. The built-in Google TV software is quite nice, with any streaming app one could want, plus a vast library of other useful apps. Pair this TV with a 4K blu-ray player, and you're set for anything you could want to watch. I have my Xbox Series X hooked up to this, and it definitely benefits from the higher refresh rate while playing games. Gears 5 was especially nice on this TV. At $3000, this was a very expensive purchase, but my wife and I decided to take a chance and treat ourselves. (Thank goodness for financing.) However, after owning it for three years, the TV died unexpectedly. There were no signs leading up to it. There was no physical damage. One day I went to turn it on and I got no picture and no standby lights. Geek Squad techs tried replacing the power board, but that did not work. They determined that the panel had died, and a replacement was not available. It was out of warranty, so there was nothing to be done. They suggested that I could take the main board out and try to sell that, but that might only net me about $100. I am quite disappointed that I spent $3000 on a TV that only lasted three years. It is very unlikely that I will buy another Sony TV anytime soon. This is a shame because their PlayStation consoles have always been reliable for me.

First TV purchase since 2005 as I have always been a projector person and the new apartment I moved to wouldn't support a projector so I needed to purchase a tv. This TV is amazing! I absolutely love it. The picture quality is phenomenal and the colors vibrant and brilliant. It connects to my bluetooth ear buds and operates great with my Marantz receiver to control the volume to my speakers. The contrast is as expected of an OLED screen. It's pricey, but it's a Sony and I expect it will last as long as all the other Sony products I've purchased.

I bought the 77 inch A9G when the price came down to $3500, and I can't deny I loved it. Seemed easy to use, and I liked the idea of the center channel capacity with this TV. But one week after I bought the TV I noted the 2021 A80J Sony dropped to the same price. I read the reviews on the improved processor, and felt I had to make the exchange (supported by phone support from Best Buy national that I called for help deciding) , so I returned a perfectly good A9G because it seemed silly to pay the same price for a 2019 model OLED. The A9G took some time to break in, I feel, and got brighter over the course of a week. The A80J was no different, though I fretted about it some. At the end of the first week, I was regretting the exchange, and thought about reversing the decision, and ....I didn't have to. The break-in seemed to happen almost overnight, and the A80J was seemingly as good. Wait!! I am not telling you that the A80J was better, am I? But I read review after review comparing that A80J and A90J, and it just seemed that the A80J was about as good. Really only nuances of difference, and the A90J was new flagship. If the A80J was as good as the flagship? Just to complicate things, I went to a friend's home to see a golf tournament in his brightly lit TV room, and he had an LED Sony Z8H, and I was blown away by the "nits" brightness, the contrast, and the colors. So I read about the benefit of nits for HDR, and even considered exchanging for the Z8H, especially when I found an open box version at a Best Buy close enough that was cheaper than the A80J. So I watched more reviews, and exhausted myself thinking about the minutiae, and finally came to this conclusion: ALL THREE ARE GREAT TV'S. I have a dark room, and so I decided to keep the OLED A80J, and give up the center channel capacity, and 10 less watts of power the A80J had compared to the A9G. If I had known that A80J was not not visibly better to my eye, I may have kept the A9G, but it does cost money when you are out of Best Buy delivery range to turn these TV's over. I ruled out the Sony Z8H mostly because I had the dark room, but also because I noted that it weighs 100 lbs. Every time I would have cleaned behind that TV it would have been an ordeal. Finally, I judged that the new processor would be worth the money. I'll never really know, because I couldn't see the difference with my inexpert eye. If the A9G was $500 less that the A80J, I would have kept it all the way. So that's my review. I cannot gush about my TV, but I can gush about all three of them. Maybe this will help someone else trying to parse out such decisions.

I bought this TV shortly before Christmas after almost buying the LG C1. This is a fantastic TV with amazing picture quality but it is not perfect. The Good: The story of this TV begins and ends with picture quality. The depth of color blows away even other OLEDs in HDR and is excellent in upscaling SDR. No calibration is needed. Brightness is also very good. It was a big concern of mine in buying an OLED TV because I have it mounted on a wall that faces a south facing window – not an ideal place to put a TV for glare reasons. But I have had no problem watching content even in broad daylight. Finally, the built-in speakers are fantastic for built ins. Unlike past expensive TVs that I have bought that are not even enjoyable until you buy an external speaker, the forward facing speakers behind the screen work very well and get quite loud. Don’t get me wrong, they won’t provide the sound quality of even a basic soundbar and subwoofer. But this TV could function just fine with only its own speakers and I will probably wait a few months before buying audio components. The bad: none of these things deal breakers but there are some less than ideal aspects to the TV. First, the out-of-the-box picture quality for standard content is not great and the screen modes are confusing. Vivid mode, which I used to use for sports, distorts the color so much that I stopped using it. The picture becomes excellent once you go into the menu and tweak the settings a little bit. It only took about 15 minutes and they were plenty of guide specific to this TV on the Internet. But it is something you’re going to want to do as part of setup. Similarly, HDR It’s not automatically enabled on all ports and you have to play around with the settings to get different sources to output the way you want them to. I noticed an immediate jump in quality with my PlayStation five games months I tweaked the settings. And addition, the lack of the VRR support and only two HDMI 2.1 ports (One of which is also the E-ARC) is annoying for such a high end TV. Although at least with a Sony PlayStation five, I haven’t observed any negative effects and unless you are a multi system gamer, the ports should be sufficient. Finally, the remote that comes with the TV feels cheap and has no back light. I highly recommend buying the better quality remote that comes with the 890J, Which you can get as a replacement part for under $100. Sony says it is not compatible with the A90J remote. But I have been using mine for a month and it is perfectly compatible and didn’t even need to be paired. Conclusion: after a month, this is an excellent TV. It has some wonky Settings issues and takes a little effort to get the most out of it. But if you’re willing to put in a little bit of time to research the settings, I don’t think there is a better value at this price point.

      Hi CasGam,

Thank you for taking the time to write such an in-depth review of your experience with your BRAVIA XR A80J OLED 4K TV! We value all your inputs and appreciate the feedback. Unfortunately, the A80J (all sizes) remote control doesn't come with a backlight. VRR will be available via a future firmware update.

You can select the appropriate picture setting for your Google TV to your liking. Unfortunately, once you make the correct settings in an external device, it will not carry over to the other inputs. For devices connected to the HDMI input, you can switch to other input and you just need to get into picture settings again. You may check the link below for explanations for each of the settings available in Picture mode.

Despite your concerns, we're truly happy that you like the improved brightness, greater contrast, and vibrant color and overall impressive picture quality this TV delivers, especially in SDR content that are noteworthy. Good to know that you also appreciate the audio quality. With the BRAVIA XR A80J, you will enjoy a premium OLED picture with contrast and color that feels deep, natural, and real. I had the previous version of this TV (A1E). It was beautiful! Then I got the Xbox series x. It was still beautiful; however, it wasn't capable of 120 Hz. So, I decided to upgrade to this beautiful unit. In my personal opinion, this is the best picture I have ever seen in a set. From 4k being better than before, to running anything UHD, this TV absolutely covers the gamut of entertainment. Contrast, color, brightness, it has it all! It is cheaper than my last unit and I got 12 inches more screen now for less than my A1e 65". This TV is worth every cent!!!!!! Make sure you get an 8K HDMI (ultra-high speed).

If your looking for the best entry upper level OLED and want the inkiest blacks and movie experience (with sound) from the TV alone. Then look no further than the 77'' A80J OLED Upscaling is terrific and the colors pop right off the screen without an overly saturated look. Very natural viewing experience with all the bells and whistles. If you want that little extra brightness. Add 1700 and you'll get 6" more and more nits with the A90J or possibly the best TV orf the year. Happy huntings.

    TV Review

Bottom line for this tv; if you’re debating whether to get a 77” A80J or a 65” A90J, get bigger A80J. I’ve fallen in love with watching movies all over again. After going through 3 A90J panels with horrible screen uniformity issues, I decided to pick this tv up and I couldn’t be happier. All the screen uniformity issues that plagued the A90J are non-existent on this panel. Super clean, even for a 77”. And no purple tinting in sight! Picture quality, motion, and UI is superb. For watching movies and shows it’s just beautiful once you dial it in. I watch during the day and night time hours, and it’s great for both. However, I have only one window in the room which is off to the side. The build quality is better than the A90J too in my opinion. Now where this tv falls apart is with gaming and e-arc. No VRR or ALLM out the gate (which I knew) is a bummer and hopefully Sony releases that firmware update soon. Also, playing Xbox series x on this tv, although visually stunning, is a let down on the audio front. If you plan on using a receiver via e-arc with a 5.1 setup or more prepare to be annoyed. When using bitstream audio with the XSX (DTS or Dolby Digital) the sound will cut out every few seconds. It’s literally unusable. I know this is an issue with this tv because the LG C1 doesn’t have this issue. So hopefully the Sony rep that trolls these reviews and posts replies takes note of this. So, if you want a gaming tv for next gen gaming, look elsewhere for now. Especially with only 2 HDMI 2.1 ports available and one being e-arc. Hope this helps someone! Good luck!

      Hi SonyA90J,

Thank you for taking the time to write such an in-depth review of your experience with your A80J Sony OLED TV! It's unfortunate that you had some display issues with the A90J. We're glad to know you like the overall picture quality of your A80J and you're having an enjoyable watching experience. We value your input and appreciate the feedback regarding the VRR and ALLM. There are plans to make these features available on the A80J via a software update. We're also sorry you're experiencing audio cuts out using bitstream audio with the DTS:X and Dolby Digital. For this, try checking the Digital audio out and set it to Auto 1 or Auto 2 instead of PCM.

Picture quality and apps are great. Easy setup except for the ports on the back pointing downward is a pain. The remote is great, but it needs a backlight and a mini trackball. Can't tell you about the sound quality because I use a surround sound system. The main thing is picture quality, vibrant, deep blacks. The legs were a snap to attach. Just be sure to measure where you're placing it BEFORE you attach the legs because there are multiple configurations.
