ASBL causes the image to become very dim

However, if you are watching a show that has static elements on the screen (eg. sports scoreboard, or game HUD), the image becomes super dim after about 5 minutes -- dimmer than some OLEDs made by other manufacturers that are less than half the price, such as the LG C1. Presumably, the A90J commands such a high price because is it supposed to be the brightest OLED on the market. However, in many real-world scenarios, this is simply not true. A bit of online research showed that this is a problem with Sony's software implementation of ASBL. The A90J's implementation of ASBL reduces the screen brightness by about 50% if it detects any static elements on the screen. One would think that the A90J could have a less aggressive algorithm of ASBL because it has a a fairly hefty and expensive heatsink, but it seems that the Sony engineering team has overlooked this, and is using the same ASBL algorithm on the A90J as on their OLED models that do not have a heatsink (such as the A80J). A bit of research also showed that the LG OLEDs do not have this problem. I cannot recommend the A90J unless Sony fixes their ASBL software to be at least on-par with competitor TVs that are less than 1/2 the price. However, I am still giving it 3 stars, because everything else about the TV is great.

While we are glad that you like the picture quality when you first turn on the TV, we're sorry that the image becomes super dim after about 5 minutes when watching a show that has static elements on the screen. This is definitely not the experience we'd like you to have. We'd love to help you troubleshoot your problem and turn your experience around.
If the whole image or part of the image remains still, the screen brightness will be gradually reduced to prevent image retention. This is not a malfunction of the TV. Ref: https://support.am.sony.com/release/Ref_5024540121.pdf page 11.

I purchased it in the Best Buy outlet in Aurora, CO. The tv was and open box item in “Excellent condition” by what the box said. I started to talked 1 sales associates (the only one on the floor of the store). I couldn’t see the tv because it was inside a sealed box. The associate told me the geek squad inspected the tv before it goes to the outlet store. He never offered to pull it out of the box and to even see it and/or try it out. All this being said, I decided to purchased the tv trusting the word of the employee and trusting Best Buy a very serious company. “Excellent Condition” means that everything is working properly, no physical damage on the product and possibly missing original box and manual. Just a note: I was in Aurora working and I purchased the tv when to get a truck to Colorado Springs where I live and went to pick it up same day. Close to 4 hours back and forward. Gas and time spend. When I open the tv at home, the tv was dented. Missing the 2 screws from one of the legs, the covers of the legs. The screen shut down and started to blink red (6 times). Clearly, NO ONE inspected the tv. They place it in a box and try to sell it in dose conditions. I’m been calling Best Buy about all this issues. I contact Sony and they told me tv was purchased in March 2023 and it was repaired by them once. Tv was having issues already and is out of manufacture warranty. Again, no one told me anything about this at the store. I have an appointment scheduled for someone to come out and inspect the tv next Wednesday. 8 days without a working tv. I’m so disappointed and frustrated with Best Buy, I thought the Best Buy’s and the employee's were trust worthy & professionals. This has left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Everything was so inconvenient. I wasted gas, time money. I went to Lowe’s to get the 2 screws missing.

This TV has a very natural picture quality and the blacks and contrast are amazing. Wish it had a bit more color pop and brightness. I looked at the new Sony mini LED TV as well but preferred the OLED all day. You won’t be disappointed.
