Great Camera for Video Creators!!!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So I've been using the ZV-E10 for a few weeks now and since I also have the Sony A6400, I am relatively familiar with the core functions and user interface as the menu is exactly the same on both cameras. I'm going to try and break this up neatly into different sections so you can skip to the part you're interested in. Let's get into it! Usability - The ZV-E10 is extremely easy to use especially if you're just starting out. The camera has 3 main modes and will cycle through these modes at the press of a single button. On the top of the camera you will see a button with a camera/video/S&Q icon. This is the mode button and will switch from taking photos to videos and also that buttery smooth slow motion setting (slow & quick). I think this is great because by default the camera is set up for automatic in each of these modes so if you're not familiar with manual settings of cameras, Sony has you covered here. Just press, select and shoot! The ZV-E10 also has way less buttons to worry about with a simplified approach, I really dig it. There is a button for everything you NEED, and you can also customize a bunch of buttons to be shortcuts for your favorite features. So I think less is more here,,,, Swapping out different lenses is also very easy to do with the press of a button and a twist of the lens, you're off to changing your entire outlook on what you can capture depending on the lens that you install. This is another great feature and is also what separates it from being an all in one point and shoot, which are great cameras but are limited in their capabilities. Now even though I believe this camera to be great for beginners, it's also a great tool for intermediate to advanced level users.. I personally will be using this for B-Roll and a Second camera angle while shooting my YouTube videos. It's honestly perfect for that. Quality - The ZV-E10 comes with Sony's 24MP Mirrorless Crop Sensor that is tried and true. The image quality is crisp and clean and performs very well in low light situations providing you are using the correct lens for low light situations. I also have the Sony 35mm f1.8 lens and if you're looking for a great all around lens that has exceptional low light capabilities as well as a walk around portrait lens to pair with this camera, then I highly recommend you pick up this lens. Its perfect size and capabilities will bring the ZV-E10 to life when it comes to that amazing background blur and excellent low light capability. The video quality again just like mentioned before with photos is exceptional for a camera this small and light. If you're looking to start a YouTube channel or use it for social media, perhaps just as a second camera for B-Roll, then for the price and what you get, you can't go wrong. Other things to note is the Auto focus is ROCK solid!! This comes with eye auto focus for both human and pets, in photo and video mode!!!! That's awesome especially because my A6400 does not have these features in Video mode. Another reason why I will be using this for video over my A6400. Audio - There are 2 parts to this! 1- The onboard microphone and the onboard speakers. Just to be quick the onboard speakers are just good enough for you to hear what was recorded, but not good enough for you to tell the quality of what was recorded. Luckily Sony has you covered with a headphone port on the side of the camera which is an AMAZING feature in a camera of this price. This will allow you to monitor your audio levels while recording as well as playback your videos to hear the audio. This is a game changer! My A6400 doesn't even have this feature! 2- The other part of the audio is the On-Board Mic. On the top of the camera you will see this large perforated square and this is where the microphones are located. Now being that sony is marketing this to a vlogger type customer, they have specifically worked on this part of the camera and I can tell you that compared to my A6400, the audio is actually surprisingly good straight out of the camera. Of course you also have a microphone jack on the side of the camera to plug in an external microphone to get the best sound possible. Screen - Now what everyone has been waiting for!! The new fold out screen is a new feature on a camera in this price range, and sooooo many people have been waiting for this! Especially content creators…. I have been using the A6400 and while I love that screen because it flips up and I can properly frame myself, I LOVE< LOVE >LOVE this new flip out/swivel screen. It's just nice and easy to operate and maneuver to get certain shots. I feel like all of the Sony cameras going forward should ( and probably will ) get this new feature. Now the screen itself is very nice and the colors are true to what your eyes see , and I generally had no problem with it until I took the camera outside. Using this camera outside in the sun was very difficult. There is a brightness option to increase the brightness to max brightness, however it was still difficult to see and being that the camera DOES NOT have a viewfinder, taking pictures with this camera is almost impossible in sunny bright situations. So it's obvious sony is aiming this camera at people who make videos over those who primarily take pictures. Just keep that in mind. Battery Life - Okay so battery life is pretty good with this camera. I would say on average with what I get with my A6400, maybe just a slight bit better because it's newer and possibly has some optimization done to its processor. I'm just guessing here. It's hard for me to give a battery life estimate on the camera because I use it a little here and a little there. I haven't used it constantly until the battery depletes, but I would say it's probably going to be good for most people, and if you're a power user you will already know to grab some spares to keep in your bag. Stabilization - So while Sony is gearing this camera towards Vloggers, I would say not to count on the in body stabilization, as it is only electronic and in my testing doesn't really work that well. In the days of using it I noticed that it has a significant crop factor ( zooms in on you ) to the point where it's very difficult to get your surroundings in the frame with you when shooting. I also noticed that when using it, it creates a small blur every-time a foot step is taken. To me the constant blurring of the person is worse than the slight shaking of the background with the electronic stabilization on. I prefer to turn off the Active Steadyshot stabilization which gives me a larger frame to shoot my video in as well as no blurring of my face when I'm walking. AND if you walk gently with the included 16-50 kit lens, you will be fine. Those who will be filming from a seated position or moving around minimally, such as panning shots, you will be completely fine with the steady shot set to standard which will turn on the steady shot in the lense that you're using. In my case the kit lens which has it built in. Sony Shooting Grip - Now I want to throw this in there for those of you who are looking to VLOG with this camera or anyone who is looking for some type of control of the camera while holding it in one hand. The shooting grip is surprisingly GOOD. I don't think I would have ever bought one but now that I used it, and with this camera, I can see the value in it. It makes holding the camera much more comfortable as well as giving you one finger control over the recording, shutter, and zoom functions of your camera using a low energy bluetooth technology. It's also great for when you find a seat to place the camera on a table in front of you to continue shooting your videos. If you're looking to VLOG I would say to really give the Shooting Grip a look. You might just love it! Final Thoughts - There's so much more to this camera, and if I sat here and wrote about it all, well it would take a looooooong time. I tried to structure this review and hopefully it will help you with your decision in purchasing a camera. I started with Canon and then used Sony, and fell in love with their cameras. There's something magical about them and I feel as if they inspire creativity in me. Maybe they will do the same for you! * NOTE : THIS CAMERA DOES NOT COME WITH A VIEWFINDER AND BECAUSE OF THAT I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS CAMERA FOR PHOTOGRAPHY ALONE

Vlogging Made Easy!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As a new Vlogger I’m always looking for the most powerful and easy to use cameras and equipment for shooting tutorial videos and still photos of our travels. The Sony Alpha ZV-E10 Mirrorless Vlog Camera has recently become my new favorite vlogging tool. This camera is made to support both still photography and 4K video shooting in a very user-friendly package. Make no mistake though, this camera can also support professional vloggers/photographers looking for advanced and manual settings. In the box: Alpha ZV-E10 Mirrorless Vlog Camera with 16-50mm Lens, AC adaptor, USB-C cable, rechargeable battery pack, shoulder strap and a microphone windscreen w/ adapter. Additional equipment: Sony’s Vlogger Accessory Kit which includes the GP-VPT2BT Bluetooth Shooting Grip with Wireless Remote Commander and a 64GB SD card. First Impressions: I’ve owned a couple Sony cameras over the years, but this is by far the most feature-rich and easy to use camera for a self-described intermediate vlogger. The camera is very manageable, and the controls are laid out well. The 3” LCD screen is a good size for vlogging and it can be rotating in virtually all directions making it a snap for shooting videos. I’ve had challenges in the past knowing when I’m recording or not, and there’s no missing the red outline around the screen when recording! There is a built-in microphone and Sony provides a snap on windscreen. The camera feels well balance when used for still photography and is very easy to manage on the shooting grip. Using the Camera: As mentioned Sony did pack this camera with a number of automatic and manual features/setting so while the battery was charging, I read through the online manual and watched a couple of videos. My main use is going to be shooting sailing videos and secondary use will be for shooting stills. From the video perspective, I pretty much starting using it with the settings right out of the box and have tweaked it a bit with more use. What keeps coming back to mind is the ease of use for shooting video with the big LCD screen and the added pistol grip (which also serves as a tripod). I also do product/service videos and the Product Showcase setting is a nice addition. With this setting the camera focuses on the product automatically, then back to person in screen once the product is lowered/removed from the shot. The 4K video is way better than I ever expected and the built in Directional 3 capsule microphone does an amazing job capturing voices in front of the camera and avoiding surrounding ambient noise. And the windscreen (mouse) is a must on the sailboat! For shooting stills I am using most of the auto features and continue to dabble with the plethora of manual settings the camera provides. Pros: - Rotating 3” LCD makes shooting selfies and videos a snap - Overall build quality and design fits great in hand or on the vlogging grip - 4K video is a game changer for my videos - BT and WiFi capable for exporting photos and videos to computer or mobile device - Microphone captures voices in front of camera without picking up ambient sound - Ease of use with multitude of auto features and online tutorials - E-mount interchangeable lenses – this camera supports my Sony lenses from 2003 Cons: - A body cap is listed on the packaging but was not provided (no back lens cap provided either) - No built-in flash, not a huge issue as one can be added if needed - No SD card included with camera Overall the Sony ZV-E10 Vlogging camera has checked all the boxes for my usage and would certainly recommend it to any vloggers or photographers looking for an affordable and powerful mirrorless camera. If you’re vlogging, this is certainly a camera to be considered!

OUTSTANDING VLOG CAMERA
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sony αZV-E10 (Model: ILCZVE10L/B) is custom tailored for vlogging, both in its controls and software, but it is also an extremely impressive still camera and is an outstanding piece of equipment, overall. The Sony αZV-E10 offers a stellar array of features and functionality and excellent specifications. This mirrorless, interchangeable lens, APS-C sensor camera is terrific. It is a robust and flexible camera with outstanding hardware and excellent interchangeable lenses. The αZV-E10 is compact in size and light in weight, making it easy and convenient to carry and use. The Sony αZV-E10 vlog camera takes the best features and functionality of the Sony ZV-1 fixed lens, 20 megapixel vlog camera and incorporates them with the backbone of the Sony α6100 interchangeable lens, 24.2 megapixel camera. This new hybridized model is refined and customized with additional, specialized features for vlogging, delivering much of the best of both models. The αZV-E10 sensor is a 24.2 megapixel, APS-C, Exmor CMOS sensor measuring 23.5 x 15.6 mm (not full frame). The αZV-E10 has powerful and outstanding Auto-Focus and Auto-Exposure functionality and offers vloggers and photographers complete exposure control with more than a dozen exposure modes, five focus modes, thirteen picture effect modes and seven creative style modes. The αZV-E10 has an incredible array of digital imaging capabilities. The Auto-Focus system is fantastic; possibly the best available. With 425 auto-focus points, real-time eye AF (human and animal) and real-time tracking that genuinely performs as described and as expected, it truly excels, and exceeds most other cameras. Exposure control with the 1200 zone evaluative metering system which operates in center-weighted, spot metering and full-screen modes is absolutely outstanding. The αZV-E10 has Sony’s advanced image processor, the Bionz X, which is the underpinning of the excellent image rendition, with accurate color rendition, including skin tones. The αZV-E10 image formats range through 14 bit (compressed) RAW providing for excellent post-production editing capability. The αZV-E10 shoots video at resolutions of up to 4k (oversampled from 6k), and offers a wide range of frame rates (allowing for a variety of slow or fast motion shooting), image sizes and compression schemes. Video functions also include multiple cinema profiles including HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) and S-Log3/2. The αZV-E10 includes a dedicated Still/Movie/S&Q button to shoot 4x slow motion video, or 60x quick motion. The αZV-E10 also features a dedicated top panel button to control background blurring. This button instantly toggles between a clearly focused background, and a defocused, blurred background (bokeh effect). A unique new “Product Showcase” feature has been added for vloggers. One button depression toggles the feature which instantly shifts focus from the vloggers face to whatever object (product) is extended directly in front of the camera for close-up. Occasionally, this feature required a few attempts before it would shift focus to relatively small items. Audio quality from the three capsule directional microphone on the top panel is excellent. Sony thoughtfully includes a “dead cat” (synthetic fur) wind screen which is helpful when shooting outdoors. The Multi-Interface Hot Shoe supports digital audio with external microphones, as well as flash units. There is also a 3.5mm input jack for an external microphone, and another 3.5mm output jack for headphones to monitor audio recording. The mike jack is behind a plastic door which candidly appears very delicate and feels as if it will break off quite easily. I miss the built-in flash of the α6100. For still photography flash is essential in low-light conditions, but it is also extremely important in marginal light conditions and shadows where having fill-in flash is invaluable. The αZV-E10 is equipped with an articulating 3” TFT, LCD touchscreen which rotates from the left of the camera body. While it is essential for vlogging, it is also valuable for low-angle shots and high-angle shots. The αZV-E10 also supports shooting video in vertical orientation. In addition to the red tally light on the camera body, the touchscreen illuminates a highly visible red border when recording, which is perfect for vlogging. The only performance deficiency that I encountered was that of minor rolling shutter effects, particularly during fast pans in 4k, which is common with CMOS sensor cameras. Touchscreen functionality is still limited and is not available for the multilayer menus. The αZV-E10 lacks the electronic viewfinder that I enjoy on the α6100. Although a viewfinder may not be considered a necessity for vlogging, it is extremely useful in both still photography and some videography, particularly when using long lenses. Handheld shooting with a telephoto lens benefits from the more stable shooting platform achieved when the camera is supported at three points including hands and face, with bent arms braced on the photographer’s body. This is particularly important when framing the shot, and in holding the frame. An electronic viewfinder (EVF) is also essential when checking or correcting focus and when manually adjusting focus. If your intended use of the αZV-E10 is exclusively for vlogging you may not miss the flash or viewfinder, but the αZV-E10 is much more than a single-purpose vlogging camera. It is an incredibly powerful, flexible and competent digital imaging video and still camera. A strap is included, but a rear lens cap for the kit lens and a body cap are not. The memory card specifications for on-board image storage is SDXC UHS-I or II, V30, U3, C10. The αZV-E10 has 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth for file transfer, remote camera control and integration with the Sony GPVPT2BT Shooting Grip with Wireless Remote Commander, which is a versatile and useful accessory that I use for both handheld shooting and for tabletop tripod functionality. The addition of the αZV-E10 to my gear locker has enabled me to undertake dual camera videos. I have both the αZV-E10 and the α6100 mounted to GPVPT2BT Shooting Grips. Both cameras can be stationary on their GPVPT2BT tripods, or one can be stationary with the other utilized handheld, and either can be easily and quickly transitioned between tripod and handheld. With the customized controls and features which are tailored for vlogging, and the additional benefit of electronic image stabilization (not IBIS), the αZV-E10 is my primary camera for handheld shooting, while the α6100 shoots B-roll from its tripod. The controls and software are very robust, with many options and settings which afford complete creative control over this very powerful, yet compact camera. The online documentation and help files are excellent and comprehensive. The PDF “Help Guide” is an impressive 577 pages. The αZV-E10, is compatible with all Sony E-Mount lenses. The kit lens is the SELP1650, 16-50mm (35mm equivalent focal length 24-75mm), f/3.5 – 5.6, power zoom lens with Optical Steady-Shot (OSS) image stabilization which is further enhanced by the cameras digital zoom. Zoom can also be controlled with the dedicated zoom lever on the shutter button, and programmable zoom speed (range 1-8). My new favorite lens to carry as my second lens is the outstanding Sony SEL70350G, 70-350mm, (35mm equivalent focal length 105-525mm), f/4.5 – 6.3, OSS zoom lens. With this excellent zoom telephoto lens and the kit lens, a great range of shooting environments are accommodated with only two, compact and relatively lightweight lenses. The αZV-E10 is supplied with one NP-FW50 battery pack, which utilizes in-camera charging. An external battery charger, and additional battery packs are available as accessories. The in-camera recharge time is approximately a couple of hours, but battery life is excellent. The αZV-E10 can run hot during lengthy video recording sessions. The internal thermal protection sensor shut down the camera after about 50 minutes of 1080p recording, and after about 30 minutes of 4k recording. Sony Alpha cameras have proven themselves to be excellent, well-respected cameras. The Sony αZV-E10 is just such a camera. I am genuinely enjoying using the αZV-E10. The feature set and exposure controls are so extensive and robust, that any videography / photography utilization is very well supported. In automated modes, the αZV-E10 is in virtual control of the photography and can be trusted to produce excellent images and videos of professional quality, with simplified, automated ease of use. The αZV-E10 will fire at 11 fps, bracket exposures and shoot with a 1/4000 sec. shutter speed. Low light shooting is excellent. The ISO standard/normal range is 32,000 and an expanded ISO range of an incredible 51,200 is available. Video capabilities are beyond extensive, including Cinema Picture Modes. The customized vlogging controls, features and functionality tailor this camera for optimized vlogging. The camera hardware seems to be high-quality. The lens mount is metal, and lens lockup is solid. The αZV-E10 body is plastic but is not fully dust and weather sealed. It is sleek and elegant, and feels good when handled. The Sony αZV-E10 is really an excellent camera. It is extremely capable and produces excellent videos and photographs. I am enjoying the αZV-E10 immensely. The size, weight and outstanding features and technical capabilities of the αZV-E10 really make it an excellent camera for many applications, and render it the perfect, optimized vlogging camera. Of course I recommend this impressive camera very highly!

Questionable Quality
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was so excited about this camera. Good features for the price and compliments my A7IV. I got the camera today and first thing is that the mic door flap doesn't stay closed or opened all the way and seems super flimsy. Upon further inspection, the plastic tabs that holds the door shut, one of them snapped off and the other one doesn't hold the door in place. That is a very bad design. Maybe I'm just unlucky when it comes to getting gear. Everything else seems fine but things like that really irritate me.

Perfect Camera For Content Creators

As a budget vlog camera, with it's extremely generous asking price, abundant features and excellent quality, folks are in for a treat with this one. It's surprisingly lightweight and perfect for portability when not in use. The design is very similar to the previous ZV-1 model but with a few extra bells and whistles. Specifically this time around you have the ability to interchange lenses with ease and transform an already outstanding device into multipurpose powerhouse. As mentioned above this camera is tailored to vloggers with it's convenient flip out screen giving you selfie style viewing. As a beginner, one may feel overwhelmed by the plentiful settings and options so I recommend watching walkthrough videos online to give you a better understanding. However, if you're familiar with these types of cameras you should feel confident in your purchase. There is no built in flash so an extra attachment may be necessary, I didn't really have trouble capturing scenes in low light environments. The touch screen is just used for focusing which I would have liked to see other uses for. One of my favorite features though is the intelligent auto mode. This does exactly what it says, automatically adjusts the settings of your shot, which makes it easy for newer vloggers to get the best detail with no effort. I was very impressed to see high quality 4k video, clear crisp audio, as well as a setting to record in 120 hz making all of my videos ultra smooth and satisfying. And with that, if you download and install the imaging edge mobile app to your smartphone, you can easily transfer all of your photos and videos to your gallery within no time wirelessly. Overall you really can't go wrong here, Sony definitely came out swinging and dare I say hit a home run with the ZV-E10.

Insanely good mirrorless camera.

I've recently gotten into videography and this little camera was too good to pass up. The price is extremely attractive and the Vlogging features along with the ability to be used as an interchangeable lens camera for photography seemed too good to be true. While it lacks many handy on-board controls for setting changes like a higher-end mirrorless or DSLR cameras might have, that is not the point of this camera - and I found, with a few settings in the quick menu, I didn't really miss them. Once you get it set up with a few personal changes to the custom buttons, this little camera can punch WAY above its weight class. - Image/video quality: The ZV-E10 uses the same APS-C sensor that's used all the way up the A6--- line. With the exception of a standard Sony weakness for rolling shutter when taking videos and panning quickly or shooting very fast moving objects, the image and video quality are excellent. I was able to grab very high quality still images and stunning video that held up to post processing. 4K/30p video with log profiles and 8-bit 4:2:0 recording is certainly more than good enough for a blogger starting out and even held up well for getting a surprisingly clean key for green screen effects. I would have loved to see something like 10-bit 4:2:2 output over HDMI for the very best output quality but that really is asking a bit much in this price range. -Vlogging: This camera is the first tool in my starting toolkit as a vlogger. Let me tell you what I was able to do: Within minutes (literally less than a hour of testing!), I was able to take sharp video in selfie mode, test product mode (which isn't the kind of video I'll be taking but wow it works well to automatically switch focus from the presenter to a product and back), switch lenses and take 4K video of birds in the trees out the window into my backyard, attach the camera to my laptop and toggle the menu item for USB streaming and have an instant 720p webcam on my laptop for Zoom and OBS Studio. If you're worried about the resolution of the USB stream (I thought I was) don't be. The quality of the image is good enough to upscale to 1080p and, when compared to the output of a high-end 1080p-native webcam, still came out looking much better. If you want more pixels you can get an inexpensive video capture adapter to plug the HDMI output from the ZV-E10 into a USB port on your laptop and stream up to a glorious 4K. Sound: The on-board microphone is incredibly impressive. No other on-board microphone sounds this clear for all around video. The clip-on windscreen is also a nice touch. To be honest, I immediately went to an external microphone plugged into the mic jack for flexibility but the point is I didn't have to to get some impressively clean audio even outdoors. Kit lens: The included 16-50mm (24-75mm equivalent) kit lens is more than capable. It's compact yet manages a good wide-to-telephoto range that will keep a lot of users happy without having to swap. But the point is that you CAN swap. Focus is fast and nearly silent, so there's no hint of focus hunting or noise on your video. Zoom is loud and will be captured but I don't tend to zoom while I'm recording. If that's something you need to do, swap in a different lens with a manual zoom and go. Battery life: It's not a big battery, but I was able to go a fully day of on-and-off shooting on one charge - but barely. I did invest in a power adapter that uses a dummy battery that plugs into the wall for longer video sessions, but the camera will also charge via USB when streaming. USB charging doesn't seem to fully keep up with power draw, but it will get you a few hours. For my personal needs of taking a small camera along with me for everything from snapshots to getting amazingly high quality video on the go, the ZV-E10 could not be more perfect. My big DSLR hasn't come out of my bag since I got the ZV-E10 and it probably won't. I stream virtual performances for a local community theater using OBS Studio, do headshots for the theater and wildlife photography (thanks to a longer zoom lens I got) and am starting up my own (very small) YouTube channel - all with the same camera. I could not possibly be happier. I can't possibly recommend it enough unless you're doing high quality 4K broadcast footage... and even then I'll bet the ZV-E10 is up for doing your B-roll at a minimum. You won't do better without spending quite a lot more money.
