When Sony first released their ZV-1 it was a remarkably interesting take on a piece of kit focused on vloggers: a small body, great built-in microphones, a larger screen with no electronic view finder, and a large assortment of features crafted to support all sorts of video shooting scenarios. When I started my home renovations I became especially interested in its successor, the ZV-E10, which introduces interchangeable lenses, a larger sensor, and heavily improved autofocus and tracking. SUMMARY: This camera builds on the already respectable ZV-1 with fantastic additions which will allow the creators to grow their recording capabilities as their needs evolve making it a great first camera for the budding blogger. PROS: - Interchangeable e-mount lenses provide huge flexibility and value especially for existing Sony users. - Bigger APS-C sensor and heavily improved autofocus tracking. - Accessories like the grip and app help accommodate different shooting needs. CONS: - Videos have a very noticeable rolling shutter when the camera is moved a lot and subject is still – this issue also presents itself in low-light stills. - While this is a good mirrorless still camera – it could be made better with a built-in or optional electronic viewfinder for those who prefer it. The ZV-E10 has a ton of features and is designed to give people looking to get into the vlogging space with a single primary camera and accessory bundle to get the job done. Frankly, there are so many things it can do that any complete review would turn into a short novel – so I plan on talking about the most important/impressive features, how I used them and how you might use them, as well as some tips that I have along the way. DESIGN: The most important design aspect is the compact size. While most will want to carry other lenses, you could toss the camera and charger into a small purse or bag and be ready to take on day. The body is a combination of metal and plastic and it feels well built – there is a digital hot shoe at the top for mounting flashes or microphones (more on this later). The grip has a nice rubbery feel, but due to the size of the camera it feels a little cramped, which is why I’d recommend the shooting grip accessory (more on this later) There is a large 3” flip-out screen and all the standard buttons you would expect to find along with a dedicated video record button – as this is a vlogging camera. There are also specific function buttons that do neat things like blur out the background, switch to slow motion capture, and focus on products that you hold in front of the camera. On the bottom is a standard 1/4 20 threaded mount for attaching accessories and mounting tripods. Along the size of the camera you have USB-C, micro HDMI, 3.5 mm headphone jack, and a 3.5 mm mic phone jacket – props to Sony for providing all the ports one could ever want. SPECS: Now on to the information that really matters. The ZV-E10 moves up to an APS-C sensor from the 1” on the ZV-1. This larger sensor and higher megapixel count of 24.2 means even sharper photos and oversampling in video taking a 6K frame down to a 4K frame. Speaking of video you will be able to shoot 1080p up to 120 fps and 4K at 30 fps. Also new here is the E-mount allowing you a choice of over 60 available lenses styles. There is a 3 microphone stereo array, which when paired with the included wind screen produced fantastically clear audio by itself, but long term you may opt add an external microphone to the mix by taking advantage of the digital audio hotshoe or 3.5 mm jack. Also improved is the battery life. I was able to get 70-90 minutes depending on the resolution which is excellent for this form-factor and battery size. Not to forget, this camera also shoots stills at 11 fps with continuous autofocus for quick moving subjects. ACCESSORIES & LENSES: There were two accessories that were included in my kit, the first is an essential for anybody considering this camera – the control grip. This is a Bluetooth connected grip that allows one to zoom in/out (with a compatible lens), start recording, and trigger the handy background blur effect. The unit helps tremendously with hand fatigue that you would encounter by using just the camera by itself – due to its small size. It also flips out and doubles as a table tripod if you are recording solo and need to shoot video while using both of your hands. The second is a 70-350 mm F4.5-6.3 lens with OSS (Sony’s in lens stabilization). While you probably won’t be shooting a selfie vlog with this lens, it does highlight the flexibility of this camera's e-mount and allows you to capture some dynamic video and long-range stills. While I didn’t have an external mic to test, it’s worth noting that there are several options which one can attach into the digital hotshoe – these include shotgun mics as well as wireless microphones, great for people who might be demonstrating or speaking at a distance away from the camera. USE-CASES: If you haven’t figured out the name of the game yet, it’s versatility and I feel like the best way to describe this is by talking about different shooting scenarios and needs that you may encounter and what features the ZV-E10 has to tackle these. This might involve different hardware capabilities or software modes or some combination of the lenses and accessories. - On-the-go (videoing subject) – In this case and the next you will make excellent use of the shooting grip which will give you excellent one-hand control. You can also add the 75-350 lens and capture wide angle of a scene and then zoom in on your subject. The flexibility of using other e-mount lenses is a huge plus here over the ZV-1 and really gives you the opportunity to grow with this camera as you develop your style. - On-the-go (videoing self) - While the kit lens is great, if you are planning on self-vlogging you should consider opting for a wider angle 10-18mm F4 lens. This gives you a wider angle of view and plenty of margin to turn on active stabilization (which will crop your video) and still be comfortable not having to fully extend your arm to keep your head and body in frame. - Stationary (videoing self) – Another use case you will certainly have is setting up the camera on a tripod to shoot yourself talking or demonstrating a certain activity or product. In these cases you might not have help and you may want to make adjustments while standing in front of the camera. In these scenarios the Sony Imaging Edge Mobile app is an excellent tool. This is a free app that Sony offers that connects to your camera over Wi-fi. It allows you to remotely control the camera, change modes, and settings. It also gives you the ability to view a live feed and recorded content so that you can get everything set exactly right without being behind the camera. - Live Streaming – In the age of Covid and vlogging, everybody needs a good webcam and the ZV-E10 is no slouch. They made it amazingly easy to engage live with fans, by simple plugging in the camera through the USB-C port. It registers as an external video/audio device and you are off to the races. This allows you to use it in the default camera app on your PC to record video locally or as a device input for live streaming to your favorite social media platform. - Product Showcasing – This is a handy feature that works extremely well. When enabled via the options menu or dedicated button, you can hold an object in front of the camera and it will automatically focus on that object. When you pull the object away, it will refocus on you. It’s a specific use-case, but one that any vlogger will eventually need so it’s nice to see it built right in. - Slow motion – Sony includes an S&Q mode, which stands for Slow and Quick. The purpose of the mode is to record video with the intention of it being in slow motion – i.e. when you play it back you will observe the clip being 4x slower @ 120fps. This dramatically improves your processing/editing time by allow the camera to do it for you. - Stills – Again, while the focus of this camera is video – you can still get some great stills with it. Quickly moving objects are a little difficult to snap due to the lack of a digital viewfinder, but with the default kit lens I was able to snap some beautiful sunsets, landscapes, and portraits while taking advantage of the background blurring capability. It also has a built-in mode for panoramic pictures as well which did an excellent job stitching together the stream of photographs.

Returned it less than a week after delivery. BestBuy charged me $120 for restocking fee. I never even turned on the camera, only held the phone in my hands and decided it was too large for my purposes. If it takes $120 to hold the camera then I'm not shopping at BestBuy anymore, plenty of other stores to shop from.

A good camera for Vlogging and Photos

The Sony ZV-E10 was designed for the vlogger in mind and it hits the mark. Excellent video and audio right out of the box, when you add on the Sony Vloggers Kit, the ZV-E10 feels like it becomes an extension of you. Battery Life: Advertised to provide 80 minutes of video OR just under 450 photos. While these numbers are not bad, they could be better, the supplied battery for the ZV-E10 (NP-FW50) is one that Sony camera fans know well and have made their gripes known. On my test runs I averaged 75 minutes on video and got 400 photos, but the temperature was rather high when testing. If you’re planning on a full day of video and photos, bring an extra battery or two, your other option is charging the battery directly through the camera body via a USB-C cable, this option is slow. Sensor: at 24 megapixels, it is on par with other APS-C sensors and picture resolution is very good as well as color and lighting. While not a photographing powerhouse, as that was not its intended customer base, it does very well capturing stills but excels when placed into Video mode. Lens options: This was a great upgrade, lens swapping! Swapping between lenses is a breeze. The provided 16-50mm lens is excellent and provides a great range and depth of field but now you have the ability to throw on a prime lens and expand your videos to another level. Perhaps you want to shoot your next vlog in 35mm at 1.8/f… well, now you can. In the box you also received a windscreen (dead cat) for the microphone which is a nice added piece. Video: The auto focusing is amazing, for the price point you do get 4K video but only at 24 or 30 FPS and your slow motion shooting is maxed out at 1080p. Overall, its an impressive camera right out the box for the price and really, the only thing holding it back is its battery life. While the touch controls are limited, I think Sony was going for a keep it simple type of setup, which is more in line with Vloggers. Its lightweight and has a minimal footprint which is great for when your on the go or just want something that will get the job done well without weighing you down with equipment.

On the box, the Sony ZV-E10 Mirrorless Vlog Camera sounds like some kind of hyped up webcam of the type you mount on your monitor. What's in the box, however, is an extremely powerful photo and video camera in a mirrorless body that just happens to have a feature set that vloggers and streamers would find more than handy. As a mirrorless mount with an interchangeable lens system, this camera takes excellent pictures. The huge APS-C sensor captures beautiful images even in less than ideal lighting conditions. The AF system does a great job of keeping the subject in focus, making portrait photography effortless. Swapping out the 16-50mm for the 1.8f/50mm was easy once I figured out the alignment dots, and gave me some outstanding portrait shots with some nice bokeh. Video also comes out beautifully, in HD and in 4K. The intelligent autofocus keeps the subject looking sharp and there is some image stabilization that keeps camera movements looking smooth. There's a slow/quick motion setting for video capture as well. Swapping between still, video, and slow/quick-mo is done via one button. You have to look at the icon at the top of the display to know which mode you are in. My initial lighting tests ended up being in slow-motion because I didn't know what was going on. Also, it's difficult to move quickly from video mode to photo mode to snap a quick still then back to video mode, since it cycles through the modes with each press, and there is a bit of a lag between changing so it's easy to overshoot which mode you are trying to get to. If you could take stills in video mode, this wouldn't have been that big a deal, but for some reason you can't with this camera. During a quick shoot while I took my family fishing, I constantly had to tell them to hold their pose while I figured out what mode I was in. And for some odd reason, often when I was zooming in or out directly after taking a picture, the camera went into review mode and zooms in on the pic I just took, leaving me scrambling trying to figure out how to put it back in camera mode before I lost the shot. Oddly enough, it was the online streaming feature, the one that ostensibly this camera was designed for, that felt like it was the least intuitive to use. Every time I plugged in my camera to my computer it would flash that it was not in USB streaming mode. I had to watch a youtube video to figure out how to get OBS to recognize it as a video capture device. Tucked away in a menu option (provided you are in video shooting mode first) is the option to turn on USB streaming (don't plug the camera in first, or else it'll activate file transfer mode). Once that is selected, you can open up your streaming software, and after you connect the device it will be recognized as a selectable source. I recorded a quick video game streaming session, pointed the camera at my face for some close-up reaction shots, and set a hotkey to cut over to it occasionally. The result was worth the hassle of figuring out and setting up. Movie quality closeups, with a tight depth of field that made background blur filters obsolete. Even in the challenging lighting conditions (in my bedroom at night, with a fluorescent desk light shining on my face and a 15-panel nanoleaf cycling through every color behind me, you know, typical streamer stuff) the footage was pristine. If you've got the face for it, this camera is essential for giving your production a professional sheen. Even if you don't, there's a beautifying mode that gives that nice soft focus to hide blemishes. And if you do any sort of product shots, the intelligent autofocus has a mode that prioritizes close objects over faces. This means that you can be on camera with your face in focus, then hold up a product close to the lens, and the camera will quickly focus on it, then focus back on your face once the item is out of the way. None of that silly "hold your hand behind the product so that hopefully your webcam can see it" nonsense, this camera makes it seem as if you had a trained cinematographer on your crew. Overall, the end product that this camera puts out is worth the occasional frustration at not being in the right context menu. Beautiful pictures with minimal work, and excellent streaming capabilities, all in a small package.

This camera is great for beginners who want to clog or even just for taking pictures. This uses a mirror less lens and is compatible with E mount lens so you can use other lens if you want as well which is great. Inside the box you get a USB type C cable which is great because it’s the new standard over micro USB these days. This camera also comes with a lot lens as well to help you get started you just need to get a SD card. For vlogging this has features like a a swivel display that you can flip 180° so you can see what you’re taking with the lens facing you. It’s a touch screen but honestly you’ll be using the buttons on the camera. It has a red light in front and the border on the camera display shows red background which tells you that you’re recording. The camera is also great for beginners because it has a lot of the functions of a camera that’s simply a button vs changing the settings like product showcase which focuses on an item automatically. It also has a button that helps you blur the background as well.

I recently upgraded from the Sony ZV-1F to the Sony ZV-E10 and it is the best move ever! I owed the ZV-1F for about 9 months before upgrading and it was the perfect camera for a beginner getting into photography and videography. As time went on, I knew that I needed to get a better camera in order to grow my skills and when the ZV-E10 went on sale for black friday, I couldn't pass up the deal since that camera was on my wishlist! At this point, I've owned the ZV-E10 for about a week now, and the camera is perfect! The 16-50mm kit lens is amazing for what it is and the photos/videos that are taken with it comes out looking very beautiful and cinematic. Since I am still a beginner at this camera setting, I just set everything to automatic, which still does a great job! The photos and videos are still amazing and I can't over the fact that the AF and bokeh looks so good in the photos/videos (the AF is also pretty fast)! The microphone captures good audio and it does a great job for what it is - even for vlogging. Although, I would definitly say to invest in a good microphone if you're looking for something that will capture the fullness of your voice. Somethings that I don't really like about the camera are: the batteries and the touchscreen functionality. The battery drains pretty fast if you have the camera up and running. You will DEFINITELY need extra batteries for this but amazon has some good bundle deals for this! As for the touchscreen functionality, there is ONLY touch to track or touch to focus, no other functions than that. As I mentioned, I came from the ZV-1F, where the whole screen has touchscreen functionality. I was pretty sad to find that out since I was so used to the ZV-1F's screen. My final thoughts on the Sony EV-E10 is that it is an amazing camera for what it will give you. Although, it is more on the advance side since the settings can be a little hard to understand from a beginner, it is still a good camera to LEARN and GROW your skills from. The lens are something that can always be switched out so you don't always need to use the 16-50mm kit lens (but know that lens do get expensive if you are looking to upgrade). I do not regret my decision of buying this camera and I am very happy with it!
