The battery backup doesn’t work with either one even after trying fresh batteries. Do not recommend. Too bad as everything else about this alarm clock is great.

I feel an alarm clock should be designed to be so intuitive that directions are the exception rather than the rule. Also, projecting the time on the wall/ceiling is a bit gimmicky ... unless you have an actual need for it.
