If you turn it off with a disc still in it, then turn it back on, it will say no disc detected. The only way to “remind” it there is a disc inside is to open and close the drawer (sometimes twice).

It seems to stem from the power cord being a separate connection to the unit rather than being hard wired to it. This causes connection problems sometimes resolved by unplugging/replugging the cord on the back of the unit. The power connection to an AC outlet also takes up more space than a regular cord connection would. My first unit purchased years ago didn't display this problem until after the return period had expired. I thought the problem might be fixed but fortunately my recent purchase revealed this problem the first day. I have a regular Sony DVD player with a normal power connection and have no problem with it.

It required several steps, and the remote was not intuitive (use the ok button, not the play button, if you want to play a DVD. )
