I do not remember not buying these speakers. Who did???

I got these speakers for half off during the Best Buy Black Friday sales. These speakers are easy to drive and can play pretty loud without distortion using a moderately powered amp. The mids and highs are pretty smooth although the low end is a bit lacking. The clarity however is somewhat blurred. On some tracks, the voice of the singer and the background instruments do not have good localization, kinda mushed together. Hence the 3.5 - 4 stars. They do sound better than the Polk T15 and the Klipsch R14 when I auditioned them side by side at my local Best Buy.

Ok, I'm far from an audiophile. Don't know diddly about cones, warm, bright, etc. Having said that, I know what I like to hear. Rich bass, clear sound. I just hooked up these Sony speakers and tested my Barry Manilow Greatest Hits CD. Next, my favorite of all time, Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall. I’m very impressed! My son-in-law is a commercial audio/visual tech so his opinion means a lot to me. To his ear, these speakers have a really good sound. As of now, I highly recommend these for someone who might have space and $ limitations and just need a darn good sound to listen to on a medium to low setting. I don't crank up the volume so I can't comment on that level. At this price point, on sale to boot, I figured I'd give them a chance. Glad I did. I have them hooked up to my JVC RX 507V receiver and playing my CDs on Kenwood DP-M7740, all older equipment that still works. Haven't tried playing vinyl yet but expect to hear the great sounds that only vinyl can produce. I hope this helps someone out there on the fence. I decided to buy locally rather than online in case I wanted/need to return them. No chance of that happening. If my opinion changes in the future, I’m hoping I can update this review.

I just bought these speakers and I can't stop listening to them. I had ordered another brand and I has to send them back because they were defective..turned out to be the best disappointment because I saw these online and ordered them. I had just recently bought a Sony pslx285 turntable and a Sony ta-ax285 which look like they are brand new so getting these Sony speakers is awesome! They have a rich sound, look great in my music room too. I didn't have to turn the volume up much for my entire house to be rocking! These 100 Watt speakers are a definite keeper! Get a pair you won't be sorry.

I got a Sony 5.1 receiver for Christmas to replace my 30 year old stereo receiver. I bought these speakers originally to use as rears, but they sound so much better than my old Bose 201s I decided to use them as fronts. The bass is surprisingly good for 5 inch woofers, but I do have an old Yamaha powered sub that gives me a little more thump. I was afraid that these speakers would sound too bright, or harsh since they have the super-tweeters, but they don't. They sound very crisp and balanced with good mid-range and adequate bass. Someday, I will get the towers for fronts and move these to the rear, but for now I am very happy with the sound of my inexpensive system.

For the money, these speakers deliver excellent sound. I replaced my NHT Super Zero speakers (which I love) with these and was surprised by what I was missing…thanks to the 3-way design. I have a small listening room, so needed small speakers and supplement these with an 8” subwoofer. I’ve owned more detailed speakers (like my old Infinity’s) but they were bigger and more expensive. I just started listening with these…but I know I’m going to enjoy them.

I have been involved hi-fi audio since I was a teenager… I am now 74 years old and have designed and constructed dozens of "audiophile" systems. A short time ago a friend asked me to specify a near audiophile system at the lowest possible cost. After a great deal of research I came up with a system, and then eventually purchased it for my own purposes. It is designed as a near-field desktop system. The amplifier that I have mated with it is a fossae audio BT 300 – 2 and a passive subwoofer of my own design was used for the low end. Although I have heard audiophile systems costing five times more I have to say that the performance of the Sony course speakers is excellent! This is due to the response of the speakers particularly in the mid-to high range. The nuances that are brought out from streaming applications such as spotify are excellent! Even at very low volumes the music is nuanced and contains information that is not usually heard on playback. Imaging and soundstage are more than acceptable. However, if you wish to play at louder volumes you may do so. The volume is adequate for small to midsize rooms... Truly an amazing system that can be purchased for less than $400.

I rarely post reviews however after getting these Sony (model SSCS5) speakers I had to come in and say how great these really are and they are fantastic. So I have had my 5.1 system since basically when Hi-Def came on the scene so I have had a set of "Energy Speakers" (very small) for about 12-15 years now, also a Denon receiver. Awhile back I started thinking that my sound system wasnt really all that good anymore so while at "BestBuy" I started looking around and since I am NOT a sound system guy I was totally lost about upgrading. I started doing the necessary research and as you all can understand the more I looked the more I got information "Over-Load", LOL So I did a Google search on Home Audio speakers and I found that pretty much every page had these Sony speakers listed very favorably while even against very expensive speakers. So I went back to BestBuy and bought a set of these Sony speakers and was blown away with its superb sound and I even got these speakers on sale, Woot, Woot! So I will be going back in a couple of days to get another set for my rear surround sound. Oh, and btw, I also bought the Sony Center Channel speaker (Model:cSSCS8) and again I was blown away with its sound. I had no idea what I was missing until I got these speakers for my movie enjoyment! Kudos to SONY for making these speakers very affordable while having superb sound!

These 3 way bookshelf speakers are by far my favorites under a buck and a quarter. I use them in my bedroom with a Marantz 2252b and that’s a nice fit. I love vintage HiFi but these Sony’s would be hard to replace. I’m building another HiFi for another larger space and while I don’t think I’ll be using Best Buy I will be seeking help from Magnolia. Great product service and delivery.

I have had these for a month. I bought them to replace some vintage Pioneer floor standing speakers that sound good but taking up too much space. at first the base sounded a little weak but I added +4db base on the amplifier. Wow. I don't plan on getting a subwoofer. Unless you want chest pounding base, you don't need anything else. Outstanding for the 60s, 70s, 80s music I prefer.

Not that great, but budget friendly if you are looking for entry level

These speakers sound great, paired with my Dennon AVR-E300 receiver. I use them as front Chanel bookshelf. Store associate Mike was helpful, honest, and made sure I was paying a fair price. Thanks Mike. Hint - verify your receiver watts for channel, where speakers will be used. Impedance is also important for clarity.

This review is a 5 star based on what you get vs the money spent. It’s an excellent speaker that’ll get loud for small to medium rooms. In larger rooms it may fail to hit high home theater peaks. Remove the grills as they cause some high end loss. Unless they are the “sharp” for you. Every av receiver on the market should handle these with ease. Don’t be afraid to purchase these for a budget home theater or 2 channel stereo setup. They need a sub for the bottom but, they do a good job if you’re not trying to get below 50hz. All together good, then later go buy the GR research upgrade and step them up to the next level.

The best value audiophile bookshelf speakers bar none. This is my 2nd set of them, for my den and I am totally satisfied, especially at the $128 price point. They are without peer at this price point. Crystal clear and wonderful for the smaller room, office, or den.

I already have the tower and center channel for these so when these bookshelfs went on sale it was a no-brainer. The bookshelfs don't have the bass/low mids of the towers (obviously) - but they do have the advantage of 80% of the perfomance at half the price and 1/3 the size. The bass is good- if you have tone controls on your source or amp you can compensate to a point. These won't rattle the windows but you can feel the bass if you boost it a bit. Audiophile "purists" who recoil at the thought of tweaking the bass/treble knobs to get the tone they want may not be impressed with the low end on these. They can rumble, you just have to push them a bit harder to even out the high end which is really impressive. If you're looking for an above average speaker for clarity for casual listening and need something smaller in stature these are a great option and an absolute "yes" if you catch them on sale. If you can afford a bit more and sound quality and bass is more important than size, I would go with the towers.

Great speakers for the money. They offer full sound and decent separation for the money and are overall a great value.

I've been watching these for some time now. I like the three way speaker set up better than the two way and have been comparing these with the Yamaha three way that Best Buy has. After studying both thru reviews and other info I decided on the Sony CS5. I wasn't disappointed! They have a rich clear sound and are accurate to instrument sound. Their quality rivals speakers that are twice their price or more. Since my room is not large the bass response is very good. I have a small project studio and was using a pair of KLH 911B that did a good job. But these blow them out of the water with their rich lows and clarity. I'm powering them with a Crown DC150 ( 75 watt per side) and they fill the room and then some. Don't need it here but if you need more low end to fill the room get the Sony active sub to go with the CS5s. That would be a good match.

These speakers deliver top quality sound. Compact and easy to set up. You can't go wrong with Sony.
