The sound system is great… except it constantly needs to be unplugged and reset to keep the system from cutting in and out. I have a google wifi router placed 10’ from from Sony system that’s plugged into the into a LG G1 oled tv. Please don’t buy this system. I’ve heard it works better with a sub woofer which I don’t have since I live an apartment and I don’t want to be that kid that blares his movie late at night. So, if you’re not buying the sub then don’t buy this system. Or you’ll be punching yourself in the face.

Mainly 1 stars to Best Buy, I paid $1799 for Open-Box Excellent but it was far from Excellent more like Open-Box Fair. It was missing the adapter for the main box and had to use my adapter from my Sony wireless headset. But before I remembered I had an adapter that worked I drove to 2 Best Buys the first I went to customer service and had to fight to adjust for the price I paid because the current price dropped $200 the day after I bought it for brand new and $183 less for the option I choose but not really worth going refurbished for that price. The box it shipped in wasn't the greatest with the all broken foam with really no protection. I would simply take it back for the brand new one but none around me have them in stock. Now I would be fine if they would be happy with the reimbursing me the for Open-Box Fair rather than Open-Box Excellent, because this was far from excelent

Wow! The Perfect Audio System
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Wow! The perfect audio system. I have it connected to a Sony 85 inch Z8h 8K with center sync from the tv. Best Buy In Home Consultation suggested a Sonos bar with speakers in the ceiling for $4000-$5000. Ht-A9 with sw5 sub cost half of that at $2500. With the benefit of no ugly soundbar and if I move the system stays with me instead of paying to have electrical wires and ceiling speakers for the new owners. The other option was the Bose or Sonos soundbar and sub for $1500 but they lack hi-res auido for music and won't be as immersive of an experience. No complaints with value 5/5 rating.
Set up is easy. Room calibration takes 30 seconds with Sony's sound mapping technology. Whereas Sonos makes people walk around the room as if its the early 2000s looking for a cell phone signal. The Bose calibration is probably just as complicated. Only out of box adjustment I made was turning up the rear speaker volume to max using the remote control. One negative is the connection box has 1 HDMI in, which isn't a problem for me because PS5 is connected and I stream for tv and movies but it won't work for people with multiple devices such as PS5 and a cable box. Theoretically Sony can make a connection box with 2 or 3 HDMI in for the Mach 2 version of the product and it can be swapped out. No complaints with ease of use 5/5 rating.
Quality is similar to watching tv where it depends on which source is used. 4K movies in 7.1 atmos are going to look and sound much better than HD tv in stereo for 3d immersion. Similar to hi-res and 360 audio compared to mp3.
Movies in 7.1 atmos are incredibly immersive. My favorite scene is in James Bond No Time to Die where the car is spinning around in a circle while firing bullets and hearing them all around the room. It makes boring scenes, such as Jungle Cruise where the Rock and Emily Blunt are talking on a boat, more enjoyable because of the positional audio from the fish swimming and birds flying during their conversation.
Video Games are more cinematic. I love hearing the sound of a blade being unsheathed going from left to right as a battle begins in Final Fantasy Stranger of Paradise as well as the sub replicating the punches from the pugilist job class.
Music is as if you're in a personal concert. My favorite scene is from Peacemaker when John Cena is playing a piano version of Motley Crue Home Sweet Home and the front speakers with center sync from the tv give the impression of the sound stage being right in front of you. The Faster Pussycat House of Pain scene was so emotional and moving.
TV/Sports is not as immersive but left and right are done really well. My favorite is the banter during soccer. Experiencing before kickoff fear and apprehension from the Manchester City fans singing Blue Moon knowing they had everything to lose while from my right Villa fans belting out Holte Enders in the Sky. 75 minutes of pure bliss hearing: Every week we support the mighty claret and blue. Conquerors of Europe 1982. Mcginn wins the ball in midfield and the chant: We got Mcginn, Super John Mcginn! Cash opens the scoring and Villa fans sing his affectionate nickname: Polish Cafu. Then dreamland as Coutinho doubles the lead and is serenaded off the pitch. I don't remember much after that except everything happening in a slow motion nightmare. The loudest roar I'll ever hear happened when the 3rd goal hit the back of the net while feeling absolutely devastated.
TV/General watching is going to have sound coming from left and right. The best part is not having the volume get really loud when a commercial comes on instead the rear speakers project surround sound, which gets my attention and makes the advertisement more interesting. My favorite is watching a sitcom and hearing the studio audience laughing behind me.
No complaints with quality except if tv stations could upgrade to 4k picture and surround sound. 5/5 rating.
I highly recommend the Ht-A9 with sw5 sub for people who are against the aesthetic of a soundbar and want the mot immersive audio experience, except if they are using multiple devices because there is one HDMI in connection.

Coming from a Home Theater atmos system…
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Took awhile to get these. I was on a wait list for about 3 months with 3 different companies and got lucky one night when it showed available on the Sony website. I bought the sub from best buy. Opened box for $100 off. It was the only one available about 15 miles away.
I had random drop outs and scooted the hta9 receiver about a foot further away from my router (which in now about 5 feet apart) and now no drop outs. I get the occasional drop outs when someone walks in between speakers but it is wireless so it makes sense. Deal with it. But so far so good. My living room is pretty big and the hta9 fills the room. The phantom center is the highlight of the system. The dialogue is clear and bright. No more subtitles….. finally. Coming from a traditional atmos 5.1.2 setup with SVS PB200 sub setup, I’ll give this sound system a solid 8. If Sony ever patches and implements an option to adjust tone such as treble etc or even add our own sub then it’ll be 10. I’ll throw in a few more: better volume response (it’s slow/delayed) and an option to increase atmos up firing volume. Until then it’s an 8. These speakers are bright (a tad bit high-pitched). Give us an option to correct it and it’s golden. If you’re coming from a soundbar with wireless sub setup (or soundbar with rears + sub) then it’s a 10. They look great too. Blends in well. Wifey approved.
I was on the fence to return these at one point due to the fact there’s minimal tonality adjustment options. The reasoning that tilt the scales to keep them were cosmetics and wireless capabilities. My wife would not want my traditional floor standing speakers in our new home living room. But hey… that’s life. We can’t have everything.

I bought this system with the subwoofer and a pair of speaker stands. It is connected to a Sony A90J Bravia Television for the center channel.
The setup was pretty easy. I'm a man so I half paid attention to the instruction manuals and half relied on intuition. I had read and watched plenty of reviews so my intuition was pretty close. Really only needed the instruction manual when connecting the blue tooth sub. The on screen instructions were very clear for everything else related to the HT-A9. The system automatically recognized there was an update so it downloaded and installed it. The update was the component that took the most time during the setup.
I am NOT an audiophile however once everything was connected and the system ran the calibration I was simply blown away. My poor family... It's so clear yet the base moves you at the same time. My wife and daughter are not happy. I've streamed music to it through Tidal and Itunes (Tidal is way better), I've watched movies through 4k Blu-Ray and listened through movies from all of the streaming services (Disney + and HBO Max sound the best to me). I have heard sounds and voices I never knew were a part of song tracks and movies that are already familiar to me.
I've been playing PS5 games such as Returnal and Horizon Forbidden West. I am truly immersed inside the environment that I play through. I thought my headphones were good however the sound through the HT-A9 is amazing. Going to pick up Elden Ring and GT7 next to see how it feels.
I haven't had any problems with the speaker disconnect issue. I have the receiver right on top of the console cabinet and my wireless router is more than five feet away from the system. The remote for the TV works the audio system so I only need one remote for the entire setup.
The price is expensive. The only other surround system I've purchased was an old 5.1 Sony system from years ago that I'm moving upstairs (I think I paid $500 for the whole home theater in a box setup). That being said I have zero buyer's remorse. I used Best Buys' little notification chime to alert me when it was next in stock and was able to snag one.
I'll add some pics later.

I am in love with this wireless Atmos surround system. Sound quality is premium for movies and tv; also great for music with caveat being music type/source quality. I am using Tidal music which has some Masters, Atmos, & Sony proprietary spatial audio. I had these in use for about 1 week before the SW-5 sub arrived; it sounded great pre-sub, adding the sub made it phenomenal and I highly recommend adding it if you can. I am using this with a Sony TV, however opted not to try/use the option to use the TV as a source for a center speaker, the multi directional effect of the wireless speakers is such that after using the effortless room mapping feature, they make tv sound appear to come from wherever the source would be on the screen. If I were to change anything I would likely have made also available in black and included a longer power cord for component.
In regards to other reviewers complaining about the system cutting out....when I initially connected the system I was experiencing multiple instances of this with UHD movies, but not at all with music. It is noticeable and annoying when it happens; that being said, follow Sony suggestions and ensure firmware is up to date and then if trouble, generally a power cycle of the system or change in settings regarding wifi channel selection will resolve. Since I did such I have not experienced a single additional dropout, problem solved so don't be deterred by other reviews.
Lastly, I don't know that the system would be considered a "great value" if you pay full price, closer with sale price, feels like I got a steal in that I purchased both this system and the sub as "open-box satisfactory" with fantastic pricing and nothing other than the packing looked other than brand new. Do it!

I had problems with sound dropping out until i called sony support who remotely connected to my sony tv and modified the settings and now the hta9 speakers work great. I had to get to the higher level support to have it done. Now its great and i love it. Also get the larger subwoofer with it and the system is impressive. Its not better then my 7.2 surround wired speakers. However for a wireless option its great.

Sound is very good, almost as good as my full home theater setup. Very quick and simple setup, maybe its best feature. There is good enough bass for music without adding a subwoofer but for movies i think it needs it. The only sound adjustments are rear sound level and bass. I like to play around with the sound so this is a con for me but to be honest i haven't felt the need to make any adjustments. I do miss having mutiple hdmi inputs like my receiver, it only has one.

I have no Drop out issues and believe me, I have put this system through its paces and could not make it slip. Set up is a Sony X950H, Apple TV and sub SASW5. The sound is very unique and different in a good way. After previously owning a great sounding Q950A I was skeptical that the sound would be a huge improvement.
So far I have been very impressed and the hype is well deserved. My room is very large and this system fills in the space perfectly. The rears are more tuned in and powerful than my previous system. The Mid range is surprisingly good and not gimmicky.
Cons:
The price is prohibitive, specially when adding the extra subwoofer. You 100% need the sub for this system to extract all its
power.
Voices and dialogue can sometimes get lost in the action. I have to raise the volume higher than normal.
So far this feels like an upgrade. I have owned top soundbars from JBL, Samsung and Sony and the HTA9 is my favorite so far.

I've been using the system for a few weeks now. I was one of the unlucky ones that had 1 speaker that wouldn't pair so I had to return the first system and get a new one. The second system was able to be setup successfully and I've been very pleased with the sound. It's one of the best sound bubbles that I've experienced, though the system is a bit bright for my ears and could benefit from manual EQ options. When the system is stable I think it competes with a dedicated mid range speaker setup and beats any soundbar I've heard. However the instability leads into some of my complaints about the system:
-I don't think I've gone a day where I haven't had audio drop outs and I've followed all of Sony's recommendations. This is fixed by switching RF On and Off, and it's usually stable for most of the day afterwards, but I usually have to touch this option at least once a day. My recommendation is to let people choose the 5GHz wireless channel themselves. For me, it often auto-selects DFS channels that might be uncongested but aren't very stable, at least in my area.
-The speaker and sub configuration options are too basic. Yes it auto-calibrates your room space, but you can't fine tune this by setting exact distance measurements and individual speaker levels. Just about all of the options are a range like, "1-5 ft/slightly to your left or right", instead of specifics like "3.25 ft. from main listening area". My older HT-Z9F has these options. This section is labeled "Advanced Settings", but lacks many settings an advanced user might want to tweak.
-It has an option to use Dolby's own speaker virtualization mode instead of Sony's sound modes. Some may find this mode preferable, but this mode does not work with 5.1/7.1 LPCM, only 2.1 LPCM or a Dolby signal. This may be of concern to someone that uses an Apple TV or game console that outputs multi-channel LPCM. This wasn't a problem with my HT-Z9F.
I'm hoping there's at least one update that will address these issues while I'm testing out the system. In perfect conditions, I don't think anyone would be disappointed with the sound quality, but it's hard to recommend to most people with its current firmware. It's very close to getting my recommendation, but it's not quite there yet.

Sony seems to have released this speaker system to stand between the soundbar and the separates and receiver spaces. The reason I say that is it can’t really be in either camp, but to me, it seems to have the best parts of both.
Like a soundbar, this system is super easy to set up. All of the components only rely on power cables, there is no speaker wire needed. That was a major point for me. I wanted a clean set up. This delivers.
In some very important thank major ways this system however gives you a very immersive, theater like experience. There are limitations of course, the fidelity may not be as high as a proper receiver. But to my consumer centric ears, these are spectacular for a home theater. They offer tanks and dts:x, they do the proper Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio. If you have a 4K Blu-ray player and disks, these give you levels way beyond soundbar setups.
They aren’t cheap, but I feel strongly that they are worth it when considering you get the convenience. And they look good.

The AT-A9 sounds amazing! I was watching the movie Prometheus, the entire movie sounds awesome. There's a scene in the alien cave/ facility, where water is dripping from above. It sounds like water is dripping from my ceiling. I have 12' vaulted ceilings with a ceiling fan, which I was worried about before I bought it. But my vaulted ceiling and fan don't seem to be a problem. I only gave the AT-A9 4 stars, not 5, because I have to optimize the rf channel, and optimize the sound field often. Not a deal breaker for me because it sounds so good, but worth mentioning. A a common downside with wireless speakers, I guess? The trick to optimize the speakers is to have tv or music on first, move the speakers a little until they are all working. Then do the rf optimization and then the sound field optimization. Also I have the 55" sony A95L tv. Using the A95L tv for the center channel sounds amazing! I searched everywhere for someone to tell me how it sounded. You're welcome. I also have the sony SW5 subwoofer, also sounds great, the floor rumbles like a movie theater too.

I have this in my bedroom and love it. The bubble as they say is incredible. The idea of a soundbar like system but broken into 4 speakers was really intuitive. If I could change 2 things, it would be to make a proper center channel(not with my Sony tv) and to make a next gen with bigger 3.5-4” drivers and either allow a sub out as an option or allow us to buy a 2nd Sw5 sub. Dropouts haven’t happened to me and that’s the only problem this had earlier, so I hope that’s done. Overall it’s the best soundbar like system under $3,000, which I got with the sub for $1899. Really better than I expected as I have a home theater and this is closer to that than I expected. Great Product!

Speakers sounded great even when placed in a sub-optimal position. Getting a complimentary subwoofer is higly recommended and was a noticeable improvement to my experience. Did not have many interference issues despite speakers being placed next to the wifi router in my house. Setup took 10ish minutes, 15 tops. The 'virtual center channel' does run into some weirdness when speakers are placed in weird spots however. My physical 5.2 systems sounds about as good but takes much longer to set up and takes up much more space than the HTA9. Open box purchase with no missing parts and minor cosmetic damage made this a much better value at $1250 for the HTA9 and SW5 subwoofer.

Hi Collin,
Thank you for the review and we're glad to hear that you had an easy time setting up the soundbar. We hope that the sound system's flexible layout works well with not just your room environment, but also aesthetically. To ensure that you are getting the most out of your HT-A9, make sure to toggle on the "Immersive AE" remote button to upscale the entire audio systems' performance. Additionally, make sure to run Sound Field Optimization so that the HT-A9 can calibrate its performance to your environment, and that it sounds like it was engineered to be in your room. If you want to expand your audio system, please take a look at our optional subwoofer accessories (SA-SW5,SA-SW3). Thank you for choosing Sony!

For the last seven months, I have used this system for music, movies, and TV, and it has performed phenomally. I am using an Apple TV 4K as my source, plugged directly into the HT-A9’s controller (using passthrough to the TV). The system reproduces 5.1 tracks and stereo very well, but I am repeatedly surprised at how incredible atmos sounds through this system, whether playing music or video. The soundstage is wide and impressively immersive; I have never noticed the lack of a center channel. While I had some initial trouble with audio cutting out, this issue disappeared after I moved my wireless router elsewhere (it was preciously within 6 inches of a speaker (and within 1.5 feet of the A9’s controller). Since moving my router, i have not had a single issue with audio cutting out. I could not recommend this audio system more, but make sure to buy the subwoofer - I wouldn’t consider it optional.

I bought a Vizio soundbar but I returned it because of connectivity issues, then I heard about this in Youtube from Andrew Robinson. Frankly, I was sold and ordered it right away. I was excited because of its features and what it can offer like Less Wires. As soon as I received this, it was plagued by problems, it runs hot, speakers are cutting off, the subwoofer was not that great. I was even contemplating to return it. I was convinced not to trust any HT equipment who uses WIFI. Well, I started to read the manual. The answer was there. Keep it away from the router and that solves the problem. After few days, the sub had broken in, I was able to use it together with my Bluesound node 2i and even used it with my Sony bluetooth headphone which by the way, I enjoyed a lot. The cinematic experience is indeed real and visceral. Be sure to watch movies in 4k. The 360 audio is ok, can't complain since Amazon HD has few tracks available as of this moment. I recommend this product for people like me who hates wires and has uneven family room. You nailed it Sony!

Sounds great! Still not as good as a true atmos setup with an AVR but for what you get, you're paying a lot less. The phantom center channel is good. You really need good content to hear the difference. I think the key here is that all the speakers are the same size and so really envelopes the listner. Matching speakers do make a difference if you have the room and space for it. So in this case, it helps the Sony speakers shine. You can pretty place the speaker anywhere in the room, as I've had these placed in several different configurations with no impact on the sound.
I think the main issue is the connection issues, as I've seen other state this. I'm hoping an update will eventually resolve this because it does get annoying and can only be remedied by reconnecting the speakers. Also, if you get this set up, you need the SW5 sub. I can't imagine the system using an SW3, unless it's for a very small room and/or you have it on max volume.
My last complaint would be the color of the system. I wish they sold these in black or white. This greyish color looks ok, just not great.
Oh and download the app for the system!
