These speakers are spectacular, the immersion is like nothing I’ve had before. Dialogue is clear, phantom center is great, surround effects are really great.. You see that and wonder why this is 1 star - and that would be because they just don’t work very often. I continuously have issues with audio drops and cut outs. It didn’t occur right away, took a day or so before it appeared. I’ve researched online, everything recommends hard wiring devices (so no Wi-Fi), and moving router to 5+ feet away. I’ve done all this, I’ve wired the hub, I’ve moved it 3 times.. Nothing helps. Hopefully Sony can figure this out, because the speakers themselves and the concept is great - but unfortunately it’s not going to work for me. Unfortunately I’ll be boxing these back up and returning, will likely buy the Samsung Q950A or Sonos Arc instead. They won’t sound this good, which is a letdown, but highly doubt they will cut out every few minutes.

Excellent performance out of the box. The only thing different from my Bose sound at is that Bose seems to play the dialogues more clearly when compared to a center mode with my Sony a80j. Awesome surround sound not just for Dolby atmos movies but for music playback as well! Would recommend it strongly for the immersive experience.

What an amazing sound system, I paired them with the SW5 sub woofer. Easy to setup, mount them on the wall, plug them in and the magic happen. The only negative comment that I can make is, there was the 3-4 month out of stock wait, but now that I have them... it was worth the wait!

I tested HTA9+SW5 vs Bose900+Sub700+Surround700 verses SonosArc+Sub3+OneSLs+HDFury. I spent multiple hours testing these with high quality Dolby Atmos, 360 Reality Audio, Lossless Audio. HTA9+SW5 sounded best in all respect and is clear winner. 1. Sony- Best in surround, Vocals are much better on HTA9 even missing center channel, settings - DSEE-ON, DRC-Auto, SoundMode-ON, AdvanceAutoVolume-ON. 2. Sonos - Vocals are not as good as Sony, surround is better than bose. 3. Bose - Surround is worst, surround700 gave very less sound even with surround optimization. Center better than Sonos. I listened these for both Movies and Music and nothing as good as Sony.

I returned mine because of below. Initially when I got the system, there were pending updates completed them and did auto setup, it calibrated and there were several drop outs in the connections. I read some online articles and then redid the auto setup, the drop outs issue was resolved and they sounded better. Occasionally may be once in 3 or 4 days there were some drop outs and the software is asking me to switch the audio settings to "Connectivity" to resolve connection issues. But the available options are connectivity or sound quality. So if you need constant connection you need to trade sound quality which I am not happy to switch. Pros: Amazing atmos around you. I could hear audio above me besides me and with good content you hear all dimensions. Cons: Drop outs remind you that you have a bad product in your home. Non atmos and HD quality content of youtube did not sound good to me. My 400 dollar bose sound bar did a better job.

Decent system that is an excellent middle ground between a highly accurate component home theater system and a sound bar. At a $3k price point including the sa5 sub (and tax), i kept asking myself..."is it good enough?" Listening experience is well rounded listening and seems to check most boxes, though not any one, particularly. Its like a Disney cruise which doesnt get too dangerous or wild and has enough comforts of home to feel familiar but wont excite those that have experienced more. Ultimately I ended up returning it as i lean into audiophile territory and this wasnt accurate enough for me to justify the cost. I also noticed that every morning after being on standby for the evening, the sound was choppy and needed to be reset. At this price point, i want seamless to add to the minimalistic equation to justify value...ultimately what broke the camels back.

Fantastic sound beyond what a soundbar can provide BUT… this system suffers audio drop outs. You may not have them right away but you WILL have them at some point and time which quite frankly is unacceptable at this price point. I had a fully stable system for a good week or so and then suddenly it would start dropping audio at random. To be clear, I’ve placed my speakers within direct line of sight of the A9 control box and also moved my WiFi router at least 5-6ft away yet I’m still having issues at random. I have HomePods that maintain audio just fine and from what I’ve heard Sonos systems are pretty rock solid as well so I’m not sure why this higher priced system from Sony is so buggy. Hoping for a firmware fix from Sony soon otherwise I’ll be taking it back. I’d summarize it by saying outside of a traditional receiver and speaker set up this is the most immersive system you are going to find BUT it’s not worth it when it breaks the immersion and enjoyment with audio drop outs. Wait until Sony figures this out.

My expectations for this system were high...and boy was I NOT disappointed. We are re-doing our family room and our goal was to clean up the mess from our existing, traditional 5.1 surround system. Our room is 20X20 and this system had no problem filling up the room (with the larger sub.) Even with 20 FT ceilings the sound was fantastic. It pains me to say it, but I am returning the system. While working its amazing, however, the drop outs are way too prevalent. I have an Apple TV4k connected to it, and the base connected directly to my Sony A80J 77". Searched the web, saw lots of the same problems and an army of troopers trying to solve it with different fixes. I really do not want to spend my time manufacturing the perfect environment to, hopefully, make these work. I'll continue to follow along for updates, perhaps V 2.0 will be more stable.

Takes a while to tweak everything but overall it’s the best speaker system I’ve ever had and that includes trying a dedicated receiver set up with multiple speakers. The subwoofer is overpriced and a bit lacking though. It pops from time to time which is annoying and hopefully the next iteration they’ll up the quality.

      Hi Great,

Thank you for the review. The subwoofer is designed for playback of bass sound. When the input source does not contain much of bass sound, as is the case with most TV programs, the bass sound may not be audible. If Night mode is set to ON, set it to OFF. Note: For details regarding Night mode, refer to the manual for more details.

Excellent. So happy with this system. I previously bought the SONY a7000 soundbar. It was good - don't get me wrong. But i wanted more surround sound and went with the A9. And OMG it was wow. I didn't know sound could be so beautiful and impactful in a movie. I'm hearing sounds from movies i've previously seen that i never heard before. Even just watching YouTube the sound is more pleasurable. Love this thing! Then I bought the Sony - SA-SW3 and now more WOW. Now that SONY has turned me into an audiophile - i want more... going to return my SW3 and purchase the SW5 - ugh SONY! lol Overall i love this sound system. Good job SONY.

Easy to set up. Maybe a little too easy. lol. Just place and plug in each speaker. Plug in the control box and run the set up. Just beware, once things are done, it will display a picture and play sounds VERY loud. I don't know how to quiet that. The sound is just wonderful, it is so nice to lay back and enjoy it.

Hi WSPS, Thank you greatly for sharing your experience so far with your HT-A9. We are very delighted to hear you are enjoying everything about this audio system ad you find it easy to setup. During the optimization, the speakers will make a sound for about a minute. We recommended to not make loud noises, walk or stand in front of the speakers during optimization. Glad to know you feel sound from every direction and distance, even beyond the boundaries of your room. Thank you for choosing Sony! -Jess Sony_US
