My 20-yo stereo receiver sounds better. Also, when connected to my phone via Bluetooth there wasn’t enough fine control…one button push on volume went from barely audible to too loud.

Check that all the cables and cords of the system and connected device are firmly inserted.
Try to select different Sound Mode options which are pre-programmed sound effects that are tailored to different kinds of sound sources.
