Good catch for those that are starting up
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Got it for the low refurbished works great but the sound could be scratchy at times the annoying parts come in when you have to manually connect to tv. Can’t complain much because it was older and refurbished . If you live in apartments though keep the bass off

Posted .Hi VictorA,
Thank you for sharing your feedback with us regarding the Sony HT-S400. We truly appreciate hearing from our customers, as your input is essential in helping us improve our products and ensuring we provide the best possible audio experience for everyone.
To help you get the most out of your current soundbar, we recommend pressing the "Sound Field" button on your remote. This activates the surround sound effect, which is designed to provide a much greater sense of presence and a wider soundstage for your movies and music. Additionally, for the most stable and highest-quality audio performance, we suggest using a high-speed HDMI cable to connect the soundbar to your television.
If you find that you would like to explore models designed for an even more immersive audio experience, we recommend checking out the BRAVIA Theater Bar 6 or the Sony BRAVIA Theater System 6. This last model is an excellent choice for a real cinematic experience, as it includes three front-firing speakers, two rear speakers, and an included subwoofer to truly bring your favorite content to life.
Thank you for considering Sony!
Regards,
Dominick

With great soundbar comes great sound production
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Sony HTS400 is a 2.1 soundbar and subwoofer setup with a max output of 330W. I recently put it into use in place of my 2.0 receiver and bookshelf speaker combo. I’ve had a good chance to explore its features and use it in my home. To start out the HTS400 comes with the soundbar, a wireless subwoofer, remote, an optical TOSLINK cable, a quick start guide, and operating manual. The soundbar has 3 ports – USB for updates, HDMI, and optical. It has a row of touch sensitive buttons on top for power, TV input, Bluetooth input, and volume up/down. To fully access the features of the system you must use the remote. The remote has buttons to adjust the input, sound field (simulated surround), volume, bass, night mode, and voice mode. Design The soundbar itself has a nice look to it. The top surface has some texture in its plastic as well as some sparklines. I didn’t expect the sparkle/glitter type finish, but it looks nice and gives it a cooler black/dark grey look. The front of the speaker bar is a solid mesh that wraps the entire face and around the curved ends. In the middle of the face is a small OLED screen behind the mesh that can display some helpful info – current input, volume counter, bass counter, sound feature, etc. The overall size of the bar works out great with my wall mounted 55” TV. Dimensions are 35.5W x 2.63H x 3.5D (55” TV is 48” wide for reference). The soundbar also has a couple of nice design details for hooking it up and mounting. The backside of the bar has a keyhole mount setup for wall mounting. Sony included a template with the documentation that makes wall mounting a lot easier – no mounting hardware is supplied. Another thing noticeable when setting it up are the angled cutouts in the bottom/rear where the connections live. This allows the cables plenty of room to connect and not getting smashed when wall mounting. The subwoofer looks as I would expect – squared off black enclosure that easily blends into the surroundings. It is a front firing front ported setup, which I prefer over down firing subs (especially if you have downstairs neighbors). It has a single LED hidden behind the speaker mesh that gives a wireless connection status. Straight out of the box the sub was linked up to the soundbar. I have it located about 12 feet from the bar with no issues. The sub itself appears to be a 6” woofer with a 130W output. Setup Setting up the soundbar was easy enough I used the provided TOSLINK cable to hook into my TV, and after changing some settings on my TV sound was coming out of the soundbar. I wasn’t able to use an HDMI connection for this TV due to a limited number of inputs, and too many things connecting. I have to keep my receiver in place to handle the connections for all of my components, and that needs the HDMI ARC input on my TV since that’s the fastest speed port which my game consoles need. I know a lot of newer TV’s that are supporting HDMI 2.1 are tying the ARC (or eARC) channel to the 2.1 input (most TV’s that have 2.1 only have it on 1 or 2 input connections). So, if you have a PS5 or Series X/S that needs to connect to a 2.1 port you need to check to see if that is also the ARC port or if you have multiple 2.1 connections. There is also the option of connecting the soundbar to your TV via Bluetooth, but this only applies to TV that support this connection (Bluetooth A2DP support). Connecting to the speakers via Bluetooth from my phone was also very easy. I pressed and held the Bluetooth touch button on the bar, until it entered pairing mode. From there my phone could find it and I was all connected. One thing to note is your phone can control the volume as well as the soundbar remote. However, your phone volume control makes much larger level jumps than what the system remote does, so it can easily get too loud too fast if you use your phone for volume control. Sound First of all I went from a 2.0 system with a Yamaha RX receiver and older Klipsch bookshelf speakers, which was a nice setup but somewhat lacking without the sub. Upgrading to the HTS400 soundbar was a noticeable bump in sound quality and immersion. I want to comment that I am not usually all that impressed by the subwoofers bundled without soundbars. They tend to be present in the soundscape, but lacking in the real low end or in bump/rumble scenarios. The paired sub here was beyond my expectations – it sounded really good. Good low end rumble for movie or video game explosions. It performed great on music as well and really added some depth. The bass was loud enough to be heard/felt around the house. It never felt overblown, and the crossover point that Sony has used worked well. It didn’t feel like the sub was trying to reproduce any mid-range frequencies. The soundbar itself produced a nice, rich balance of sound. The sound modes included with the soundbar are a default preset, sound field surround, night, and voice. With voice the soundbar is supposed to elevate/isolate the ranges that dialogue typically lives in and lift it above the rest of the sounds. In practice I thought this worked well – drama shows that are dialogue heavy benefitted from this setting in a household of noisy kids and pets. Night mode has a somewhat similar effect as voice with some tweaks. In night mode all of the sound levels are toned down – bass level is cut, and dynamic range seems to be reduced. It also bumps up the sound for dialogue so you can still hear what you are listening to. Again in practice this worked well – we were watching Starship Troopers at night and toggled to night mode during a loud scene (there are lots of them). The bass and explosions were quieted, but we were still able to hear what the characters were saying. The surround field can toggle on or off (off is the default sound mode). With surround field on the soundbar simulates a multi-channel setup like a 5.1. Is it as good as an actual 5.1? No, but it sounds great, and it is certainly easier to setup (and cheaper). I liked the surround option for movies – it made for a rich sound stage. With it off the sound quality is still great but it loses some of the depth of field. Watching movies/TV I really liked the surround field mode because it just didn’t sound like I was listening to a 2.1 system. However, toggling over to music listening I turned off the surround field mode and found I liked that more for music. Sound reproduction for music is again really well done. The soundbar never felt overstretched or close to clipping/distorting when the volume was really pushed. The sound was clear from the lowest volume levels up through the loudest. Sometimes people focus on the loud part too much, but being able to produce good sound at low levels is tough. A lot of times you lose some of the frequency range at low levels due to poor speaker sensitivity, but I just didn’t find that here. Overall I am very impressed with the HTS400 setup. This isn’t my first soundbar – I have had some cheap, mid range (where this one sits), and high end sound bar setups. This is easily the best sounding mid-range priced soundbar setup I have had or have listened to. It was easy to setup and configure. It is loaded with great sound field effects, and a competent subwoofer. My only drawback is the connection setup – I really would have liked a pass-through setup on the HDMI, but I know that adds more cost so its not a huge loss.

Great sound and easy to setup!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great soundbar/woofer combo. It was very easy to install, the subwoofer is wireless, so it connects to the soundbar seamlessly. All I had to do was plug an HDMI cable on the ARC enabled HDMI port on my TV and to the Soundbar's only HDMI port (ARC enabled too). A con is that they do not include a HDMI cable (only an optical one), so you must provide your own. Since its connected to the ARC enabled port on my tv it passes all audio from any device that is connected to the other 3 free HDMI ports on my TV, that's the beauty of ARC (if your tv doesn't have an ARC enabled port, they also include an optical cable in case you want to plug an older device, like a dvd player or original PS4). They include a basic remote, however the bar is CEC enabled so my tv remote and my Fire TV remote can control its basic functions like volume, mute. More specific functions, like enabling the surround effect or bass level can be done using the included remote (they include batteries). I mounted my bar on the wall and they did not provide the necessary screws to do so, I had to make a quick run to my local hardware store for them. They do provide a piece of paper with lines and measurements to make it easier to wall mount it. Sound is great, has great stereo separation, and dialog is clear. It also has a surround sound function, that kind of fakes surround sound, its pretty convincing, I keep it on for movies and games. You can also connect to the bar via bluetooth and stream music to it, very convenient. The woofer is powerful, I had to lower the bass level otherwise my neighbors my complain. Highly recommend it if you don't have much space to place a full on 5.1 or more bar, even if its not a discrete 5.1 one, the sound is miles greater than my TV's puny speakers!
