Great Soundbar but Atmos effect doesn't work

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The setup and connection is very seamless, I did not feel the Atmos Effect even when using the Atmos Demo DVD that came with the soundbar. But after connecting the rear speakers it provided a much more immersive sound experience. I have to point out though that I don't think the Atmos effect works at all, no overhead sound. This system would be just okay without the rear speakers

    Not the best option...

    After hours of testing various surround sound (wireless) systems we went with the Sony 3.1. We were mainly comparing the Sony, Bose and Sonos. We narrowed it down to Bose and Sony due to the cost of the Sonos. We liked the option for Dolby Atmos thinking it would provide overall better sound. In the store, the Sony sounded great. Deeper base, great surround sound effects, and the ability to tune the sound on the remote seemed great. We purchased the sony 3.1 package with the surround sound speakers. We tested the product at home for a week with various movies and genres of music. We noticed issues with speaker connection, sound quality and varying output levels. The bass module put out more of a head bass then a low rumbling bass you could feel. This made listening to music extremely irritating and disappointing. The movie experience was just as disappointing. After hours of home testing and adjustments to settings, db levels, speaker placement and different sized rooms we decided to return the sony 3.1 for the Sonos setup(playbar, sub and play one(s)). { I will leave a review on the Sonos equipment as well, if interested. }

Its Like Being in the Movies but in My Livingroom

I upgraded from HTX900F soundbar and I wanted a system with a devoted center channel. So I got Z9F with the rears. Now my living room is an immersive home theater experience. Only setback I have intermittently is response time powering it on and powering on my chromecast with Google TV.

Owned this with opt. rears for 3 weeks

The sound was pretty decent for a few seconds at a time. I went in for a Sony X950G TV and a Bose 500 surround system. I got the TV but got the Sony HT-Z9F soundbar/sub package with the optional rears instead of the Bose. It sounded pretty good. Not quite as good as the Bose but the TV/Audio system interplay was very good. First thing I noticed was it got oddly hot. Not alarming but something to keep an eye on. I noticed that the wireless sub and rears would cut in and out really often. After a call to Sony and playing phone tag with their 2nd level support for a few weeks, I called it a day and returned it. Sony's support I'm sure is good. They'd just call at a bad time and I was running out of time to return it. So, I got the Bose 500 system I originally wanted and problem solved. No more dropping wireless speakers.

I had high hopes for this unit but it constantly loses connection to the rear speakers and to the subwoofer. They turn on and off throughout the entire movie or TV show. I have tried to work every setting, I have moved my router and a bunch of stuff from the living room to another room to avoid any type of interference. This unit is just complete garbage. I wish I could give it less than one star. Customer service was not bad. They did help me out a little bit. After some complaining they finally sent me boxes to send it back to the manufacturer. Although while it was there for the 3 weeks it got sent back with no found problems with the system. Hope everything back up and I continue to have the same problems. I've had this unit for 1 year and it was a complete waste of $899 not to include the rear speakers because it not it does not work. I recommend you go with Sonos or Bose or Samsung but stay away from Sony. The TV that I bought was phenomenal from Sony but they're surround sound is complete trash.

      Hi Jaime,

Thank you for the feedback. This is definitely not the news that we would like to hear. Please allow us to help you and turn this into a better experience. Depending on the usage environment (including the wall material), radio wave reception conditions, or obstacles between the system and wireless LAN router, the possible communication distance may be shortened.

You may also update the software of the soundbar. A firmware update improves the functionality and features of your device. It can provide fixes to any performance issues that may occur.

    Unfortunate issues!!!!!!

bought this 2 1/2 yrs ago as a sony bundle and started out great! I loved the product! But about 3 months ago I started to have issues. when I switch to my apps like Netflix on the tv.. the sound bar would switch like it should but only for 5 seconds the go back to the cable. Now the sound bar.. if left on with tv and cable off.. the bar starts making a loud popping sound. i notified sony.. their customer service people jumped on my tv through an app to try to fix the problem.. but could not fix it and left it at that. So I guess my only option was to return since i bought the warranty. Now i cant find this product in a best buy and now i might have to get a lower model for what I paid for.. I've had sound bars before and at a cheaper price that lasted for 8 to 10 years..

Hi Manny, thank you for your review.

While we are pleased you loved our Z9F Dolby Atmos soundbar, we are really sorry you are encountering issues. This is usually not the case and the experience we wanted you to have on our product.

We are not sure on what brand/TV model you have this soundbar connected to. However, if it is connected to a Sony TV, you may try following the steps below to isolate and fix your automatic switching input issue:

The issue you experienced may be resolved by resetting the BRAVIA Sync function between the TV and the soundbar. You will need to go into the menu of the TV and get to the BRAVIA Sync settings. Clear out any devices paired and turn the feature off. Then, disconnect the HDMI cable between the soundbar and TV from both products. Unplug both the TV and soundbar from the power outlet for 1 minute and plug them back in. Reconnect the HDMI cable between the products and enable BRAVIA Sync. You should have audio connections re-established.

For noise/loud popping sound issue, please refer to the steps provided in the following article to solve the problem:
      https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/sound-bars-home-theater-systems-sound-bars/ht-z9f/articles/00200429

When doing this RF Channel procedure, please ensure the connection process takes 1 minute to connect. If the connection process takes less than 15 seconds, repeat the operation a second time. Once that is done, you may also perform the Secure Link operation which is shown on page 33 of this link: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/res/manuals/4727/d3668cdaf4f83107b52ee9bdb84fa5a0/47275331M.pdf

To get the most out of your Z9F Dolby Atmos soundbar, if you haven't yet, we recommend updating its firmware to the latest version (2.315). The software includes key features, applications, bug fixes, and feature improvements. For more information, please visit the link below:

You read that right, nothing works right out of the box! Especially compared to my Samsung Q60R sound bar, which paired effortlessly right out of the box. I can not get the sub-woofer to pair with the sound bar itself on this unit, and the hdmi audio return does not work with my 2019 LG TV, so I can not set the Home menu like the entire instruction manual told me to do. It is asking for $700 , seems to have all the latest features, yet it performed worse in both sound and usage than my $300 Samsung system. Sony really need to get into the game of "set and forget" instead of trying to be too cute, it is too bad once such a great company now produces products that are too hard to use and expensive to boot.

Some things that needs improvement: Better integration with Android chromecast so it controls the volume more gentle and not only while you in the app. Also stability is questionable. Every now and then I have to unplug/plug back it for it to re-connect to devices.

Signal Loss Issues with Dolby Vision and HDR10

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Once I get the movie to play it sounds great, unfortunately I'm having intermittent signal issues with DV and HDR10. I am using ULTRA premium certified HDMI cables and the HDMI Ultra settings is active for both TV and Soundbar is set to Enhanced HDMI. I'm basically getting the message no signal from my TV but I can hear the sound. It seems with every chapter skip prior to the actual movie the screen changes from SDR to HDR and this is when I lose the signal. Switching to the soundbar menu screen and back to the HDMI input from soundbar usually fixes it, still frustrating through. I called Sony and their suggestion was to wait until a software update is released. Very disappointed.
