The Sony headphones I bought, even though I purchased them while traveling in an airport . So I've since seen the same set for a lower price. They are a known name (Sony) which I've always known to make quality products. When I tried them for the first time I was quite impressed with the outside noise cacelation setting. They deliver a crisp low, mid, and high all around sound for various uses of listening. The past few year head phones in my opinion gotten to be very trendy , especially the type that cover your whole ear as opposed to the ear buds. For music recording, which I do quite a bit of this is something of an investment. Still there are some very prominent recording headphones that are affordable . The "Beats" which seem to be the go to ,cost $300 for the same type as the Sony ones I purchased for under $50. The name recognition and popularity have been enough for people to pay that. The only other I've seen in that same Beats price range and in comparison far and above out perform the Beats. Bose, which I'm amazed how they make so much sound from the small size of devices the make. There Bluetooth speakers which fit in one hand , have the sound of a whole receiver and speaker set up. They even sound better. Beats also has a Bluetooth device which they put in the same price range. I've tried them both side by side and the Bose out performed the Beats twice over. There's just no comparison . So when buying your kids those beats headphones cause they are so trendy that to be realistic and get the $50 sonys . It's the same sound quality. If you insist on having the best and spending $2-300 then go with Bose products. The other I forgot to mention being far and above in sound performance is the Marshall head phones. To me they sound like a Marshall product should but $300 for headphones , I still believe your paying for the name. Marshall , like the amplifiers have a long rich history of being the standard go to by many professional for many years. I'd save the $300 towards an amp and be just fine knowing I only spent $50 on high quality headphones.

This is my second pair of Sony headphones, although my first pair didn't have the noise cancellation feature. These were a present for my wife who works in a noisy office. She loved mine so much but she needed noise cancelling for those coworkers that use speaker phone. The sound quality on these are amazing for the price. I compared them at Best Buy and only the Bose sounded better. The beats brand had too much bass,(this coming from a bass player) the mids are muddy and the highs nearly nonexistent. Same with Skull Candy. JBL had improvement in the mids and highs, but weak on the bass. The only negative I can say is because they are not cup earphones that cover your ears, the noise cancellation is minimal when the music isn't playing. But otherwise Sony blows any of the popular brands away in sound quality, unless you have $300 more to spend on Bose. I use my headphones mostly to learn new bass parts, where sound quality is key. For the low price, the sound quality is phenomenal, nice long cord, well built, lightweight, and will take a lot of abuse. I've dropped them, dropped my bass case on them, and had them ripped off my head (reaching for coffee during practice) and they still look like new. I've even used them for DJ work and as a personal monitor during band practice. Don't waste your money on more expensive and less impressive headphones. These are the standard other headphones wish they could attain under $100.

I bought these headphones for the sole purpose of using them for flying. They were used on several flights and in the car. It does a good job of keeping the outside noise to a minimum. It does not completely cancel out the noise. On the plane, I sat behind the engine next to the window. I was impressed and happy I bought the headphones because it did make my flights more enjoyable. I even turned the music off and just had the headphones on with the noise reduction feature on and was able to take a nap. However, after a few hours of having them on (I flew across the country-coast to coast), your ears do start to hurt. As far as the sound goes, it's not the best, but it gets the job done. The bass is there, but it's not the best. But like I said, I am happy I bought it. It worked well and served its purpose. I'm not a music producer trying to compose each song, so I don't need studio quality sound. It has a "mic" but it does not work for phone calls. You cannot make or take phone calls with the headphones. They do require AAA batteries, but it does come with batteries. The batteries are for the noise reduction. You can still use the headphones without the noise reduction feature.

    Low Cost Active Noise-Canceling Headphones

Whenever I air travel, the constant ambient air travel sound (cabin air, outside engine noise) makes it difficult for me to hear dialogue (especially soft/quiet talking) on whatever device I'm using to watch shows. Went to Best Buy to try out the Active Noise Cancellation headphones. This particular Sony model is the least expensive, and as such, nowhere near as good as the top end Bose. Still, for around $50, I did notice that it cut out a certain level/frequency/whatever of noise once turned on which made it MUCH easier to discern what folks were saying on the movies/shows I watched on the 5hr flight. These would have worked better if the headphones actually covered the entire ear - why Sony didn't utilize this simple passive noise abatement is beyond me. They sit on the ear which required an occasional adjustment to make sure they covered the ear canal. The unit is powered by a single AAA battery that sits inside the right earphone - battery life is rated at 80hrs (Sony gives you two with the headphones). If I decide to do much more frequent flying, I might invest in the Bose -- they were incredible at the store. For occasional flights, these low cost headphones work decently.

I bought these to replace my sony pulse gaming headset that I use at work. I’d say the price is fair, the headphones itself is pretty lightweight and they are comfortable on your ears. I have huge ears so the speaker cups go on top of my ears but they are still comfy even after a couple or a few hours of it sitting on my head. With the noise-cancelling feature turned off, the sound is still very good, it just lacks the proper amount of bass. With the feature turned on, you sort of get a feeling of surround sound in your ears and just the right amount of bass to really bring out the best of what you’re listening to or watching. The only thing I dislike about this product is that you will need Triple-A batteries in order to use the noise-cancelling feature :(. Lastly, these headphones definitely block out noise if you have the feature turned on and the volume up loud enough. Overall, it’s a great pair of headphones and it’s not very expensive like dre beats. If you’re looking for something simple and much cheaper to please your noise-cancelling needs, this is the one for you.

It works yes. However, the wire on the cord are already exposed after 4 months of daily use. I have had these since September 2018. I use these daily at work. When I exercise and when I travel. I will say the durability of the part over the head and padded head phones are still in tact. no peeling or cracks. As I went through 2 pairs of Beats by Dre headphone, which broke across the headband and began to peel. I am a daily headphone user, so I need durability, INCLUDING wires. The only part is that the wires are exposed. Even for daily use, I expected it to last a solid year before wear and tear. Other than that it works fine. I have not used the battery function yet. It's not really that noise cancelling for an airplane or public transit train. For other common surrounding sounds, yes noise cancelling works great. I would give it more of a 3.7 rating, not a solid 4 . I'd say sweat resistant. Is a 4.5 I plan on sending these back to Sony for the standard 1 year warranty, to see if they will replace it

Nice headphones but should have volume control too

These headphones have good sound quality & are comfortable. The noise canceling seems to work OK (tested only with office fan noise). For storing the headphones, I love the folding design, since I think it tends to protect the headphones from damage, and the headphones are more compact this way. I gave the product only 3 stars because: * It should have a volume control. This should be on one of the earpieces like the noise-canceling (NC) on/off switch is, *not* in a dangling pod that is awkward & may shorten the life of the cable (by adding stress to the cable). The user might plug the headphones into various devices, including computerized ones that can have different ways to adjust the volume depending on what software is running. Also, the device may be out of the user's reach sometimes. A mechanical volume control (on the headphones) is crucial so the user has a way of adjusting the volume that will always work. I had to buy a separate dangling volume knob with 1/8" connectors for $12. * The cable should be more tangle-free. Some other headphones use flat cable for this reason, but to me, flat cable looks like it might "unzip" too easily along the grooves between conductors. I suggest a bigger-diameter round cable. * The NC should use a AA battery instead of AAA. I use rechargeables and prefer AA because it lasts more charge-discharge cycles. I would accept the earpieces being a little bigger to have room for a AA inside.

I wanted name brand noise cancelling (NC) over-the-ear headphones for an upcoming trip of mine, but didn't want to spend a lot of money since I don't travel a lot and I already have wireless ear buds, so I tried these out. This may be as good of headphones you can get at this price since it was comparable to cheap on-ear NC headphones I once used many years ago, but I would recommend to my friends that they spend more money to get better ones. PROS: 1. Compact folding design & up/down adjusting for each side. 2. Extra long battery life - On an AAA battery (one included) NC will work for 87.5 hours according to rtings.com. That's gotta be better than most wireless or wired headsets! 3. Sound quality with & without NC seemed fine when listening to music. CONS: 1. Its NOT over-the-ear, its on-the-ear. Opening is only the size of a coin (see pic for comparison). The outer cushion did cover my entire ear. 2. Lack of comfort. It felt OK to wear them for 2 hours straight, but after removing the headphones is when my ears hurt for a while. The rest of my head felt fine despite padding being only on the ears. 3. Noise cancellation - I turned it on with low to mid pitch background noise of moderate volume, and it was less effective than I had hoped, so if I had to guess I wouldn't expect it to drown out more than 70% of airplane noise, if that.

Ear cups cover material flaking away!

Pack small, light, and works great on airplanes. Bought them 3 years ago for a long flight and was very pleased. Had another long flight this year Performances were still very good for the price, but the set was completely unusable because the ear cup cover material decomposed. There were little plastic flakes all over my ears, shirt, seat and flight blanket. Good product dying because of poor material. I live in a hot and humid climat, it may do better in colder/drier conditions. Interestingly, I had bought these to replace an older pair of Sony's , even smaller but older technology, that lasted many years but ended up with the ear cup material delaminating. But at least got to use these on several flights, not so with the MDRZX110NC.. Seems to be a recurring issue with Sony's. Disappointed.

These Sony noise-cancelling headphones are a classic case of "you get what you pay for..." The Good: 1. Can listen to audio when the noise cancelling feature is turned off 2. While the noise cancelling isn't as good as some high-dollar headphones, it is pretty effective. 3. Sound quality is good (when the noise cancelling is turned on) The Not Good 1. The Best Buy website calls these "over-the-ear" headphones. Unless your ears are the size of quarters, these are more like "on-the-ear" headphones 2. Sound quality is noticeably muffled when noise cancelling is turned off 3. Cord is less then 3-feet long 4. Batteries only last around 10 hours. While that isn't horrible, it isn't great either. 5. No microphone or remote for answering calls

I was surprised to find noise-canceling headphones for $50, especially with Sony's name on the side. As someone who has owned Bose noise-canceling headphones for many years, I wanted to get my 11 year old daughter some noise-cancelling headphones for her trip across the country. I didn't want to spend Bose-like money as she takes care of things about as well as most 11 year olds. I figured these were Sony, so although my expectations weren't that great due to the low price point, I figured they wouldn't be too horrible. Well, I was wrong. These are obviously re-labled junk headphones that Sony puts their name on in order to have an entry-level product. Complete garbage. I would not be exaggerating to say they're of similar quality to the "free" earbuds some of the airlines give you. They really are that bad. Garbage plastic, garbage wiring, terrible sound, just junk all around. I'm actually surprised Best Buy would stock these in their store. I expect a certain level of quality when I think of Best Buy.

    Didn't Cancel Outside Noise

Returned this item before I was even out of the Best Buy parking lot! Didn't cancel outside noises (even with battery installed) and I could NEVER wear these for more than 30 minutes and I needed them for most of the day wear. Very uncomfortable on top of the head and on ears. These are padded but don't fit OVER the ears completely, they sit ON your ears. I spent an extra $50 on a headset by SkullCandy that weren't sold as noise-cancelling but were much better quality (still cheaper than other noise-cancelling sets) and I can wear them all day -- and they sound great. Don't buy this product unless you only need something for short periods of time, your outside noises aren't very loud and you have to have something super foldable/collapsable.

Hi Kristin, Thank you for posting your concern. The noise canceling function is effective in low-frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, or offices (near air-conditioning, etc.) and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices. Bought one of these for a cross-country flight. Seems to work OK for that, and the noise canceling really does make a difference, so I have bought another one for my wife to use on an upcoming trip. I agree with "technophile" that it really needs its own separate volume control, although a volume control in an inline cable pod would be marginally acceptable (I ended up having to buy a separate volume control in a cable extension). HOWEVER... I STRONGLY recommend that if "SonyListens" is going to respond to these reviews, do so with a response more helpful than just that identical canned response I see in all of your responses. If you can't take the time to provide a helpful response that actually addresses the issues, don't bother responding at all.

I recently moved into a new office with a noisy air handling unit in the ceiling near my desk making it sound like I am on an airplace. I own several pairs of Sony headphones (regular and in ear type) but this is my first pair of noise cancelling ones. Just placing them on my ears I notice a reduction in the fan noise, and it gets better once I turn the noise cancel function on. I can't compare them to other noise cancel units, but the depth of the sound is great! These are the best sounding pair or headphones I have ever owned, although the pressing on the ears does get a bit uncomfortable after a while. To be fair, I usually prefer the in ear type so that nothing presses on my ears. If you want a decent pair of headphones at a reasonable price then I highly recommend these! I'd love a higher end pair of Sony noise cancelling headphones but thought I would start small before spending several hundred dollars on a pair.

Bought these before a cross country flight based on reviews here and elsewhere. The noise cancellation properties are only so-so. I have a pair of Etymotic in-ear phones that offer far better isolation and much lower overall noise level. They're about twice the price though. I find these useful in my office environment. They're good at blocking out conversation type noise. The musical sound they produce is OK. I find them similar to Apple 2nd generation ear-buds. The Etymotics are much more neutral and "true". These are slightly bass biased but not overly so. It's good to have an alternative to in-ear and ear-buds without spending a lot. For the money, I'd buy them again.

Look if you got money laying around the house and want to buy Bose, yes, they are better... But for above average noise cancelling headphones, for 1/10th of the cost of the Bose, they are a great value for the occasional traveler and families traveling together. There is no doubt that the Bose's are build slightly better and that the noise cancelling feature is a little better, but I just used these on an international trip and they were just fine. I have had Bose noise cancelling headphones before and after using these, I can't see myself spending money on Bose headphones again.... Great for the family, you can afford to give everyone a set of these and they will be happy. If you are a frequent flyer (once a week or more with lots of red eyes), I would probably go for the Bose, but if you fly about 7 - 10 times a year or less, these are just fine. Even if you have to replace them after a year, you are still ahead of the price for the Bose.

Great Sound, Good Noise Canceling, Short Cord

The sound on these headphones is great with good bass response. They are comfortable on my ears and don't seem to make my ears as uncomfortably warm as my Panasonic set. The noise canceling is good too and reduces most (not all) of the outside noise. Listening to this set with the power on though makes sound with the power switch off disappointing but it's good that it has the option and according to the marketing a AAA battery can last for 80hrs. It only takes one AAA battery and comes with one in the box so that's nice too. The gauge on the cord though is thin and the length is short so I'm not sure how long this will last but there is a 1yr warranty.

These headphones, certainly, don't come close to the Bose noise cancelling headphones, but for the price they're worth it. I purchased these for a recent flight to Vegas and was pleasantly surprised at how they blocked out not only the jet noise, but also the general din of the cabin. The sound quality was fair to good and served the purpose adequately. I used them, primarily, to watch movies on my IPad. If you're an audiophile geek these headphones would likely disappoint. The one complaint that I have is that the cord is a little on the thin side compared to my similar looking Sony headphones without N/C. I do like the fact that the on/off switch is mounted on the unit rather than inline with the cord and they're comfortable over extended periods. Bling wearing celebrities don't endorse them, but I liked 'em. Good to go.

Did not read any reviews as I had no idea what I wanted, so decided to follow the advice of a Best Buy Sales Associate. Wanted a decent but inexpensive pair to use with Milk Music Samsung smart phone and tablet as well as my 2011 laptop. Associate took me thru all the choices, blue tooth wireless (which my lap top is not) and wired, which I choose. He suggested the Sony brand which I knew was decent quality from other Sony things I have, and he suggested the opening price point, so if later I was not satisfied could trade up and not be out lots of cash. The head phones are great. The only reason not 5 stars as after worn for over an hour develop a little pressure on my ears. Like the fact they work whether powered on or not.......great for any first user, or budget conscience. Would buy them again....no question, they sound great!

Bought these because I couldn't justify spending $300 on the Bose QC25s. After wearing these for one international trip I decided that it is probably worth the $$$ to get the Bose. They worked ok on the plane both in sound quality and engine noise reduction (this is the only sound they cancel out). You have to turn the volume up pretty loud to overcome all the other sounds. They did little to nothing in blocking the snoring of the guy in the seat in front of me. Another serious issue is that they are ON EAR. After one movie I had to take them off because my ears hurt. Over ear is the only way to go. These only reduce about 20dbs of air plane engine sound as compared to the active noise cancellation (up to 3x the amount of dbs canx'd) they Bose have. Plus they don't come with a case so if you toss them in your backpack they have a very real chance of breaking.
