If you have it off, then it sounds like it's coming through a mono AM radio speaker. And I didn't notice any noise canceling miracle. I could still hear the TV, and people around me talk. Meanwhile the battery is being drained. Also, they felt like they were crushing my ears. I returned them two weeks later. Got headphones $30 cheaper that sounded good, didn't need batteries, and didn't crush my head.

We fly a lot and the over the ear design helps aid in noise reduction. The processor in the headset amplifies the sound, but does not provide true cancellation of outside noises. Great for $50!

Posted .Hello Murdock, thank you for your message. The noise canceling function is effective in low frequency ranges such as airplanes, trains, or offices (near air conditioning, etc.) and is not as effective for higher frequencies, such as human voices. -Oscar.
