    My iPod Alternative

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I decided one day a few years back I wanted to ditch my iPod and switch to a Sony Walkman; fast forward to the here and now I couldn't be happier with my past decision. It should be noted, however, that I use the Walkman as an MP3 player and just that. I don't (and never have) loaded videos or photos or anything like that on it. Just loads of music and podcasts. I initially bought the Sony Walkman NWZ-E353 and had it since it first came out. It's been all around the world with me; dropped on the subways of Osaka, and lived to play another day when dropped on the streets of Stavanger...I couldn't ask for a better MP3 player for long plane rides, boring desk days at work, or short jaunts around town. After 3 years of wear and tear my old Walkman is still very much alive and kicking. The only reason I decided to upgrade was space - I went for the 16GB because I knew I'd have this MP3 player for awhile, despite the $95.00 price tag. I saw it in store and decided try something new and to go ahead and buy one locally than try to find a new NWZ-E353 online. Pros: -Durable -Long Battery Life -Clean Features/Design -Included Songs Are Nice (I like 'em anyway) -Lots of Storage for Music and Podcasts Cons: -Lacks Features of E353 (personal complaint) -Same Common Language Choices (very personal complaint; ignore) -Bulky Shape -Chrome(ish?) Buttons Get Dirty Easily (doesn't bother me) -Included Earbuds Aren't So Great (doesn't bother me) In conclusion I'll definitely keep my E353 around, but I do like the E385 and I'll definitely love all the storage I have now compared to my 8GB E353. If I could recommend a product to go with this one, I would say these earbuds are still with me after almost a year of use: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/sony-earbud-headphones-black/4987667.p?id=1218589747316&skuId=4987667 They've blocked out many a crying infant on plane rides and sound pretty great. They aren't Bose quality, but I think they're still a pretty good deal to the casual music listener.

I have always owned a Walkman

Pros: It doesn’t have a cheap feel to it. Very user-friendly. Good sound quality. Perfect size. Made by a reputable company. This device will not judge you if you attempt to sing along to a song you don’t know all the lyrics to. Cons: This Walkman cannot play cassettes. The headphone wires mysteriously get tangled when they are left alone in a pocket for more than 25 sec, they will frustrate you, and force you to curse at them, just take a deep breath, slowly exhale, and then calmly untangle them.

I bought this MP3 player in November of 2015, and it already is losing it's mind and acting funny. It stalls, has weird errors, and won't turn off sometimes. I didn't buy an extended warranty for a MP3, usually don't need to. I know it's only $60, but I expected more than a year out of it. Buying a new one but different brand this time. I am surprised and disappointed, as I have owned Walkman's for many years with no problems.

I had previously purchased a Sandisk Sansa mp3 player and I was thrilled with that until I bought the Sony. It starts quicker than the Sandisk. and holds twice as much. I only use it for music. I use it 99% of the time in my car. My car has a USB port and an AUX jack. The Sansa only plays through the AUX jack and when an album ends, it will not go on to another album automatically. So one has to take the unit and select another album which requires pulling the car to the side of the road. My drivers manual says only an Apple mp3 player will charge and play using the USB port but I tried the Sony thinking I might be able to charge it and to my surprise it started playing and there was no waiting. It seems it will only play albums and it does so alphabetically. When I use the AUX port, and select ALL SONGS, It plays everything in shuffle play. It selects the albums and plays one song from each until there are no more songs but it won't charge in that port. It comes with 5 sample albums which I deleted and I don't use it for pictures or videos so I have a LOT of recording space. One can manage the content by computer where all the music is listed and can be deleted or moved.

A downgrade from the previous generation

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Note: Incase this is missed below, right now the best Playlist editors for Sony MP3 players a free program called "WalkmanMTP". Do a google search for it. It's hosted under Google Code. While it hasn't been updated in a long time, it still works perfectly for this player. This is my 5th Sony MP3 player. I own this player and 4 of the last generation of them (because 3 of them broke and I had to buy new ones). *Unlike all previous generations, in this model you get black earbuds instead of silicon tipped in ear headphones. While the included ones do song good, they don't provide the same sound isolation as the in-ear style that was include with all previous generations. The good: For this size player, this player is going to provide the best sound of anything carried at Best Buy. The Sansa Clip actually has a better amp if you don't care about not having a screen though. It's easy to use (you just drag and drop whatever music you want into it's music folder). The battery lasts a very long time and recharges pretty quickly. The radio works well and it's easy to set station presets. The screen is good enough for displaying album art. Even though I'm irritated by this new player It's still probably the best MP3 player out there in this size range other than the Cowan i9+ (which cost more and you have to order online - and the interface to it isn't as good). Why 3 Stars (They went cheap and this player is like a step backwards): 1) In this generation, Sony has removed the HOLD switch and the volume buttons. The functionality for these has been moved to the wheel (up/down arrows for volume control) and the OPTION/OFF button (which now has the 3rd function of also being the HOLD button). I had always love being able to reach for this player in my pocked and adjust the volume or slide the hold switch. Now having to press the wheel buttons for volume changes means you'll have a high chance of accidentally changing tracks or going into FF or RW. You just know some bean counter somewhere figured out they could save 2 cents a unit by removing these buttons. 2) This MP3 player is thicker than the last generation of Sony MP3 players and is actually about equal to the thickness of two generations ago. There is no need for this player to be as thick as it is. It makes it a little less comfortable in the pocket. You don't make devices thin and then go back to fat. ? 3) All previous generations of Sony MP3 players used an unnecessary proprietary connector. This new version now uses a standard USB to USB connector. However, instead of using a USB-Micro B connector (which has been the standard for most cell phones and tablets that don't use a proprietary cable for years now), this player uses the much fatter USB-Mini B connector type. It's a bad choice I don't understand. For most people, it means more cables to keep track of. 4) The screen resolution on this new player is noticably less than in previous generations. But it does get the job done (I can still clearly see the album art). The price of these hasn't gone down but the screen size and resolution has decreased (bean counters again). 5) These things are cheaply made and break easily. I've lost three of these. Under frequent daily use, something goes wrong with these players after about a year. My original (2 generations back) just stopped functioning after a year. My 1st one from the last generations had a button on the wheel that stopped working. My 2nd one from the last generation had a battery that went bad. I'd say if you use your MP3 player daily you can expect 1 to 2 years of use before these break. 6) Sony's included software is horrible and a waste of time to install. The only thing you need is the free "WalkmanMTP" software if you want to create playlists (download from google.code). Otherwise, just drag and drop into the "MUSIC" folder of the player when connected to a PC. It really irks me that after all this time, Sony hasn't bothered to provide a Playlist creator. The have to have software engineers that could develop something very nice for playlist creation in a week or two. 7) Horrible FLAC support ( I just use Switch Sound Converter to make a 320Kbps MP3 copy if needed. It's time consuming though). 8) Like everything else out there, Sony makes a lot of money off of the storage size differences and always refuses to include a micro SD card slot in their players. If they did, for $20 you could triple the storage on this thing. 16GB just isn't enough anymore. I just don't like the corporate attitude of using available memory as a price gouging device. Although Apple really has always taken the cake on this front. But, it's impossible to find a player of this size (small but where you can still see album art and an interface to move visually between albums) that either has more than 16GB of storage, or a micro SD card slot).

Not quite as good as the older models

Let me start with this: This is a good product. It is a good product for the price. Sound quality is good, battery life is completely acceptable, screen is adequate, construction is sound, etc. However, after buying one of these to replace an old nwz s545 I bought from a friend and lost while moving, I am just underwhelmed by this one. No built in speakers, slightly smaller screen, slightly shorter battery life. Would I still recommend this? Yes. However, I'd still recommend the older ones more.

I used to own one of these when i was younger but it was red though and i paid $60.00 for it(back when they used to sell these in stores) ,This is a good product, I recommend it to anybody who loves music, It has plenty of memory for you to store your favorite music and one of the best things about this product is that it has a built-in lithium battery (and it lasts for like up to 2 years depending on how good you are with keeping up with stuff)

Lacks Quality and Features of Previous Generations

Purchased the NWZ-E 385 for the expanded memory capability. Have a NWZ-E 464 - still going strong and love it for ease of use and great features but had almost exhausted the 8mg storage. Other than the increased memory capability this model has little going for it in comparison to other models. Pros: 16 mg storage (14.7mg) compact size Cons: Fewer options on menu Less user friendly than earlier models Antiquated graphics and design (display). Previous version graphics were crisp and clear. Dedicated volume and hold controls are gone Unable to access other features if sleep timer is on (previously, you were able to go to home page, change music selection etc.) Sleep timer must be turned off to access other features Shorter battery life than previous versions I would like to give Best Buy customer service 10 stars out of 5 , however! I have had my NWZ - E464 for 2 years - still works perfectly. Have had the NWZ - E385 for a month. After the 3rd charging, the white screen of death came up. Tried a variety of options to remedy the situation - to no avail. Interestingly enough, all my files were still there and I could listen to the music BUT had no way to see or access the menu. I took a chance and went to Best Buy to see if they could help me out. Long story short, even though I was beyond my 15 day return or exchange time period, they exchanged my unit for a new one! I could not have been more pleased. While it had been my hope to be able to get a new mp3 player, I did not necessarily believe that I would be that fortunate, especially in this day in age with so many companies struggling to make ends meet. Thank you, thank you, Best Buy for the great customer service! I really appreciate your putting the customer first!
